Law / Getting a Polish drivers license / Poland's residence permit (how long it might take to get?) [28]

Could anyone confirm this?

Yes. First what you need is the Driver Candidate Profile (PKK). And one of the requirements is residency in Poland since at least 185 days.

Also in some other thread it says that it's might be possible to do less than 60 hours of classes, if one does them in English and pays a bit more. Is this correct?

Never heard of that. From what I can see, everywhere it states, that the minimum learning hours for "B" category (automobiles) is 30 for both - theory and practical driving.

How much is one hour driving class? I've done about 15 hours already in my home country.

To my knowledge you need to take the whole course, not just single hours of driving. (of course you may take additional private hours of driving if you wish). Prices vary in different cities and different places. I see one offer in Wrocław - 1000PLN for the course and its cheap. However for English course the price is higher - 1600PLN. Of course there will be additional costs - for exams (approximately) 160, medical examination 80, driving license printing 100PLN.

And also I would like to know how long it might take to get a residence permit?

From the submission of the residence permit application - about 30 days.

Life / Classic Polish movies free - and legal - to view online [13]

Quite a lot of Polish movies you can find on youtube.

Another free site worth to check is here:

(I'm not sure though if it's available abroad of Poland, often such websites are restricted only to the local area)

The status may not be updated yet or there's really some delay there. And this is the 'economiczny' letter so it can take longer than the 3 business days to reach a recipient.

USA, Canada / Recommendation of Canadian brokerage account for Canadian Citizen in Poland [2]

Have you tried PennTrade? They accept foreign accounts, including non-resident aliens.

Even large brokerage firms and banks such as Fidelity and Wells-Fargo in many instances no longer want to deal with non-US resident clients through their US offices. Often there is little in the way of explanation, just a letter in the mail or a phone call from a broker who is following instructions and doesn't really understand the issue.

So the problem exist not only in Canada, in the USA too.

Law / Termination of permament or contract work contract in Poland [35]

You're wrong. The situation where the holidays may be transferred occurs only when the new work contract will be with the same employer.
So in your situation you will get paid since you haven't used your vacations in a whole. No other choice.

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

A little more data about this family would be helpful. First names, dates, timeframe, location? Where they are from in Poland? Maybe from Szczecin area? I ask because only 5 people with this name is registered in Poland, and all just in Szczecin:

Study / Admissions to Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland - interview experience [4]

Just be prepared for a standard questions like: why Poland? why European studies? what are your interests (preferably connected to your field of study). Expect questions regarding your personal statement, eg. if you have a research experience, they may want to ask you about it. Maybe family background, some personalities. What are your plans for future. What you did during your previous school. Such things.

But don't be afraid, the commission is mostly pretty chill and relaxed. Be enthusiastic in your answers, stay calm and confident.

Law / Do Poland's taxes apply to foreign pensions? [21]

I found this article on a Polish website, and I hope it will clarify some things (if my translation is understandable enough)

Pensions received from foreign institutions by the Polish tax resident are PIT taxable income, as well as benefits paid by ZUS. Together with other income, taxed on general principles, they are subject to progressive rates, which is currently 18% and 32%.

From the foreign pensions, during the fiscal year, PIT advances should be accounted. If benefits are obtained through a Polish bank (foreign institution sends a pension to an account in Polish bank), then it will be paying for those advances. In another situation the taxpayer-pensioner should settle accounts himself.

It should also be noted that there are provisions of the agreements on avoidance of double taxation - in most cases pensions should be taxed in the country of residence, in this case, only in Poland. In most agreements to which Poland is a party, to the income from foreign pensions is applicable so called exemption with progression method, according to which the income in Poland is exempt from tax, but it is taken into account when calculating the PIT rate. Sometimes the proportional credit method applies. It consists that the foreign income is reported in Poland, but the PIT shall include the pension tax paid on abroad, to the amount of tax that would be payable on the income in Poland.

Here's the site with big chain of Polish pawnshops, you may also check what they have and with prices. Not many great deals there in my opinion, it's better to hunt some allegro auctions.
