USA, Canada / 9/11 firefighters with Polish background [2]

I've found a Polish article about heroic firefighters in WTC, but unfortunately without any mention about some with Polish background.

remiza.com.pl/artykuly/pokaz/2366-Bohaterowie_11_wrzesnia.html

Here is the site with known 343 firefighters who died during the attacks:

fdnylodd.com/9-11-Never-Forget/Memorials/343-Firefighters.html

Some of them have Polish surnames like Krukowski, Kopytko, Tarasiewicz, Sikorsky...

Life / How can I get Canal+? Will I need a satellite dish? [2]

You have two options:

The easiest way would be to have cable tv witch canal + premium channels - but cable isn't available everywhere - it depends on the area.

Satellite dish - online purchase here: ncplus.pl/sklep/oferta/comfortplus-sport - you get promo dish for just 1PLN when buying online,
purchase in one of the NC+ providers in the country: ncplus.pl/oferta/jak-kupic

is it easy to connect?

If it's your first time mounting/installing satellite dish it may be little trouble, but it's doable. You may ask a neighbor who owns a satellite to give you a hand. You need window from south side to mount it. Details are provided here: ncplus.pl/pomoc/instalacja/instalacja-anteny

Law / Buying from Allegro using PayU or Paypal and paying for item [18]

I opened a PayU account, put in my bank information, but every time I try to pay, it is automatically cancelled about an hour later.

PayU don't work like Paypal. Allegro informs that now it's not possible to pay directly with funds gathered on PayU - you may just transfer the money to your own Polish bank account or post office transfer to your address (in Poland) pomoc.allegro.pl/artykul/26167/czy-srodkami-z-payu-moge-zaplacic-za-zakupy-w-allegro

I also tried to pay directly with credit card through allegro, and this also gets cancelled.

Try other card (debit) maybe.
If it fails contact with allegro via the form: allegro.pl/Contact2/Contact2.php

choose: Jestem Kupującym / Zapłaciłem przez PayU.../ click 'formularz' / put your email, write the questions click on 'wyślij wiadomość' ...and wait couple of days to answer.

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4501]

If your ancestors came from Poland the proper spelling of this name is Rewers. It is reverse (side of medal or coin) in Polish in literally translation although it may have different origin. Somebody maybe knows better.

Almost 1.5K people with this name in Poland, look at the map: moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/rewers.html

Life / Why is Orange Poland such a crappy / expensive network? [53]

how to change voice language to English on Orange TV.

When watching a channel: click OK on the remote - on the screen you'll see additional informations - choose "język" (language), and then you may change it to English (if available). The next option is "napisy" - subtitles. You can also try to modify it sometimes.

History / What is the history of the area that surrounds Ponizie - Podlaskie Voivodeship? [2]

What is the history of the area?

As far I know this area was Polish from XVI to XVIII century (until 1795). XIX - XX (up to 1945) hard times for Poland, borders multiply moved, lands changed owners.

Could I actually be Lithuanian or Belarusian or Tatar instead?

Of course, but also none of Pole has 100% Polish blood - looking from the history, migrations - the same applies not only for you ;)
What is your surname by the way? It may be typical for certain countries.

Genealogy / Searching for information about Zosia Cytryn and Stanislaw Romuald Hochedlinger [9]

His name was Stanisław Romuald Hochedlinger. A quick google search even without his middle name, and many pages show up.

I see just the following sites which mention this man:

pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/18_Pu%C5%82k_Artylerii_Lekkiej

zrodlo.cemesta.com/b11GcScmZ19IfSktSUhjM1MiPSwqfklZZGJpe31mcXxJVHN9e359fg.html

and both are about the same:

Staff of 18 Light Artillery Regiment (I don't know soldier terminology, so translation may slightly differ)
2nd lieutenant Stanisław Romuald Hochedlinger was 1st platoon commander (2nd Squadron)

History / Whom do the people in Poland hate more: Germans or Russians? [869]

Poles don,t like any other nation

For me it's quite opposite - we are mostly very open to expats. Maybe just some uneducated people are less tolerant and this is changing for the better - Poles overall are friendly to all.

Language / Order of words when adding one word? [9]

I'm not sure if the word "rocznica" is proper in this case. "Rocznica" is relating to "rok" - year - so for me it should be multiple count of 1 year, not month when using it.

Maybe "jubileusz" would be a better word for this.

Language / Order of words when adding one word? [9]

"Wszystkiego najlepszego z okazji dziewiąty Rocznica"

Change it for:
"Wszystkiego najlepszego z okazji dziewiątej miesięcznicy"
Because "dziewiąta rocznica" refers to nine year anniversary!

Life / Brazilian moving to Gdansk and need some help with finding a flat to rent and also a good school for daughters [33]

I was in Sopot this summer (12km from Gdansk), 3 room flat with kitchen, balcony, and view for Gdansk Bay (high rise block) - whole flat 120PLN (rather cheap) per day (utilities included). I may give you a contact if you're interested ;) It was just 8-9 days, long term rent is priced differently.

I'm native Polish and even for me it's hardly understandable, but maybe I'm too old for this ;)

Hehe tylko zanecalem klasa jest wyjebana spoko sklad baranek bulgarka lach jak chuj

I don't want to give you exact translation, but it means more less that a class is cool and some chick is hot.

UK, Ireland / Polish Female Newborn in UK, what gift is more indicated? [2]

My hint is to buy a good (not "Chinese") teddy, a rattle or maybe a safe colorful rubber toy. For her it would be though rather indifferent since she's just a little babe.

according to polish traditions?

I don't know such a thing for a newborn, the toy is for kid's fun - it don't have to be specially connected with Poland...

Work / Is it difficult finding a job for Japanese people in Warsaw? Have you seen Japanese people working here? [12]

I don't think it has something to do with your nationality. Everything depends on qualifications and Polish language knowledge. Lot of expats working here, native English speakers, specialists..

Do you think there is any possibilities that some hotel (for example Hilton, Novotel, Mercure etc...) can hire me as a clerk at front desk?

If your Polish is fluent enough and appearance is right then everything is possible, although for the aforementioned places can be yet much higher requirements and a big competition.

Maybe it wouldn't hurt to look over some Japanese companies in your area, and contact them..

Good luck!

Law / Emailing of direct marketing mailshots in Poland - laws? [3]

Sending spam is not allowed in Poland. Every 'unwanted' information is considered as spam. So the sender needs first permission from recipient before sanding any 'mailshot'

The basic legal act regulating issues related to the transmission of commercial information by electronic post, is the act on electronic services (Dz.U. Nr 144, poz 1204);

10.1. Forbidden is to send unsolicited commercial information addressed to the specified recipient by means of electronic communication, particularly e-mail.
2. Commercial information is considered to be ordered, if the recipient agrees to receive such information, particularly if made available for this purpose, identifying the e-mail address.

Sorry for the google translate ;)

Life / Asian / American TV channels in Poland? [4]

There's some possibility with satellite:

For Indian channels look here lyngsat.com/freetv/India.html
For Pakistani check out PakSat: lyngsat.com/Paksat-1R.html
With US channels isn't easy - there are few - scattered among different sattelites. Maybe try alternative: ustvnow.com

..and of course streams over internet.

Bigger dish, better range - buy FTA Kit if you're not interested in Polish channels.
