Life / Why are Polish so conservative and religious? [240]

Serve yourself:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_charitable_organizations_in_the_Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_New_York

PS: This list is ONLY in New York.

In My country, the biggest charity, by far, is the Pastoral da Crianca. They almost won a Nobel (but they preferred to give the prize to Barack Obama...)

People can consider themselves to be whatever they want to consider themselves to be, that won't change what they are and what they are not.

Harry, you can say one hundred times that 66% of the Poles are Atheist/Agnostic, you can repeat that lie every day. It will still be a lie. You will just be lying to yourself.

97% of the Poles self-declare themselves as catholics.

The only anti-clerical candidate, Palikot, even with a well-funded campaign, was a total failure and had 1,5% of the votes.

The most voted candidate is a fervorous catholic. The second one also.

The most surprsing part is that even the FOUNDER of the Communist Party, Leszek Miller, is a catholic. Poland is the Only country that i know in the world were even Communists are Catholics!

And you come and say that Poland is a atheist country?

hahahahaha.... sounds like when you said that in Britain people were supportive of Left-Wing policies, for just weeks later Cameron epically crush the Lefties :)))))))

Many Catholics don't like the church being involved in politics and public life.

Me too. I Like the moral and the values of the church.

But i don't like when they talk about economics.

And i am a catholic.

The fact that a person doesn't attend the church EVERY sunday doesn' mean he/she is not catholic anymore.

I don't attend mass on sundays (obviously) except when i am at Poland or Brazil and i still consider myself a practicing catholic.

"Yes, it no longer permeates enough for even a third of Poles to be counted in church by the RCC on a given Sunday. "

You have the wrong, extremelly wrong, that if the person doesn't go to the church on sundays he is atheist like the british.

No. No and No. Me, Most of my friends and poles that i know don't go to church EVERY sunday for a series of reasons. But all of us consider ourselves catholics.

Just look how crowded are the masses during easter or christimas. If people become atheist by not going EVERY sunday like you said, what they are doing at churces on Easter or Christimas?

Maybe that is the reason why younger Poles stay away in increasing numbers these days?

Just remember that the Catholic churches in England now are completely full because.. of the Poles!

That is also making a interesting effect: Huge numbers of Anglicans, including bishops, are converting to catholicism due to this new revival caused by the Polish immigrants.

aicaold.com.ar/index.php?module=displaystory&story_id=27003&format=print&edition_id=1506

PS: The link is in spanish, so enable the option of Google Chrome to translate it, it is pretty accurate translation.

Remember If you post a link to a non-English source, ALWAYS summarize / translate the relevant parts into English!

Or even in USA:

telegraph.co.uk/news/religion/7375163/100-US-Anglican-parishes-convert-to-Roman-Catholic-Church.html

Another thing that needed to be said: It is natural to the "country of the pope" have decreasing numbers after the same pass out. As also is common for the "country of new pope" have a increase in Catholism after he assume his position. Just see what is happening in Argentina (and actually entire hispanic latin america) right now with Pope Francis. Even a Hard line communist like Raul Castro said that maybe he will go back to the catholic church.

Same school, same grade, same teacher all your life?

You would be really surprised to know how many homeschooled (which is exactly that) people study at Ivy League ;)

(And no Admins, this is not Off-Topic. Just use a bit of your text interpretation skills to understand this analogy).

News / Presidential elections and debates 2015 Poland [472]

polish people are clearly shifting towards right.Palikot and SLD crushed, and more right wing preferences surfaces.

That sounds like music for my ears.

Every time that i feel bad, or losing hope on humankind, i see the result of both the Polish and the British elections, were in both cases the Left-Wing and Socialists were kicked out epically.

This is so beautiful... People valuating the freedom and democracing and rejecting the authoritarian socialism from the left side.

And Palikot is a complete Clown. He is so ridiculous and stereotypical that a entire Stand up comedy show can be made just using his pathetic speeches and ideas.

News / Magdalena Ogórek - a new hope for Poland? [11]

You would be shocked to see that so many communists are below 30 years old.

Actually this is pretty normal. People under 30 years didn't suffered the horrors and all the pain caused by communism, so sometimes they just believe in the utopic socialist promises.

Love / My Love Story: my 'good' family vs her 'bad' family in Poland [25]

Becuase YOU ARE in effect marrying not only one person but also their relatives and circle of friends, their likes and dislikes, habits and priorities.

Hmm that is a good point. I didn't tought about that when i gave my opinion. Now it made me rethink.

Maybe you are right.

" But it looks like it's getting worse'

Worse from your point of view. Better from my point of view (and by many Poles)

"what startled me lately was that the Polish Universities have a strong catholic agenda."

So What? Religious freedom applies for both sides. You are free to be an atheist or a muslim, so don't try to censorship my faith just because i am catholic.

" everything I read seems old-fashioned"

I come from a country (Brazil) that long ago lost it morality and now is drowned into corruption and perversion in a Caligula style orgy (even some people still resisting with their values, specially in the south).

For me, those " western modern values" like Polyssexualism, Anti-catholicism or Political Correctness extremism are the old-fashioned stuff.

So as i said, everything depends of your perspective.

News / Magdalena Ogórek - a new hope for Poland? [11]

How a memmber of the Communist Party (SLD), that enslaved, butchered and Slaughtered the Polish Population for 60 Years, can be a NEW hope?

She is a New Hope of another polish massacre, if it is what you mean.

Magdalena Ogorek HATES freedom and free speech (That is why she refuses to talk to anyone so often).

Fortunately most part of the poles still have fresh in their mind the horrors of the communist dictatorship so she had less than 3% of the votes.

But my main fear is that the new generations will forget that and let Communism come back again with all their brutal violence against anyone that dare to think.

If you want to vote to Ogorek, i just ask for ONE THING: Visit the KGB Museum in Vilnius. Is very close to Poland and then you will see what the communism done with any opposition like teachers, doctors, lawyers and priests.

It is almost as shocking as Auschwitz. And this horror should never, NEVER, repeat.

You are rethinking the relationship with your girlfriend because of her sister?

I and i really feel pity for this girl to have a boyfriend like you.

Food / What is the typical expat diet while living in Poland? [42]

Polish Food is delicious. By far one of the best European cuisine outside the mediterranean ones.

I love Pierogi, sweet or salty pierogi, doesnt matter, Zapiekanki, those things made with cheese and also those sweets (mleczo?), Kielbasa, all the pork stuff, that soup made with beetroot is also incredible. Also those ginger breads (we don't have this in Latin America) are a sugar bomb but pretty good.

Not even talking about all the insanely good drinks. Even Advocaat i like, at the beginning was strange the idea of drink an alcoholic egg, but it is freaking good.

The only thing that i still not perfectly adapted is the fermented cabbage, still taste strange for me.

News / Presidential elections and debates 2015 Poland [472]

so RCC has no right to support Christian candidate who who defends Christian values?

The RCC have all the right to support the candidate that they prefer. That is what is called democracy, but unfortunately the left-wing hate democracy (and, by default, the church).

It's only a pity that Poland won't this year be giving the RCC a hand in destroying its power in Poland.

It is funny that at the same time that you ask for the destruction of the Catholic Church, you are a fierce defensor of Islam using the argument of religious freedom.

So the religious freedom is not valid regarding your ridiculous hate of the Catholic Church?

Law / As a foreigner non EU citizen working in Poland, can I get visa for my spouse? [34]

1) You can work in Poland only if you have a work permit. The fact that your husband have one doesn't apply to you.

2) No

3) You can be hired only after you have the permit

4) It is very unlikely unless you have a really outstanding formation. Remember that the polish population is highly educated so the competition for skilled jobs is fierce.

USA, Canada / 10 things that show you are Polish [24]

Yes, but here in Poland (and everywhere else, other than the USA) the word is used correctly. Very few Poles would consider a person to be Polish just because one of his great-grandparents was Polish.

The Majority of the Armenians that are know are not born in Armenia but actually from Argentina, Brazil, USA, Canada...

Same applies for Lebaneses and Israelis.

I Think that this is a caracteristic of nationalities that suffered big diasporas. Like Poland.

News / Poland have the 3rd best Education System of Europe [49]

he British/French students don't need to prove anything, they don't feel social pressure to be educated,

Exactly! Because the political correctness left-wing troops from those countries convinced everyone that kids should not suffer pressure to be educated or they will have traumas (WHAT A JOKE!!!!)

In Poland there is no Left-Wing Political Correctness so this is inexistent. The parents of my polish friends crushed them HARD if they had bad grades at school.

Nowadays one of them is studing at MIT. What a Trauma... hahaha

Same applies to those countries from Asia (Japan, Singapore, Korea): If the kid fails at school there, the parents will make the kid have a bad time. So the kids make their best effort in school and them become educated and successful.

Universities may be a different story because I don't think Poland has the private sector that donates millions upon millions of USD every year (tax write offs) to build and operate them like the United States does.

That is a very good point. Now that Poland is a capitalist country, soo those that are more talented will start to earn real money (some of them already do). So maybe soon Polish Universities should establish a way to receive donations.

When (and if) i get rich, i will easily donate money to my university. And i think that most people would do the same.

News / Poland have the 3rd best Education System of Europe [49]

Yes, it is party of the discussion since we are comparing why the Polish Educational system is so succesfull when compared to failures like French or English system.

By the way, if you use Google Chrome, it translates automatically French to English if you want. And pretty accuratelly.

Law / Anybody adept in requirements for non-EU citizens to start business in Poland? [39]

If I will not get a visa or residence permit so what about my investments that will return or not

Actually to start the visa process you will need to have a complete business plan + prove that you have money enough to do your business, start it and survive with it for a time. Also you will need to emmploy at least 2 Poles.

Besides that, your residence permit will not be permanent (if your business close, you lose it) for quite a time.

If you start a business withou have all approvals and visas, you have a huge chance of lose all your money.

I Know because i am starting to go through all this process. I Would like to warn you that NEVER invest all your capital in a business, since there are much more chances that you will fail than succeed. Specially when investing in a country with total different rules than yours.

News / Poland have the 3rd best Education System of Europe [49]

2) Culturally homogeneous school-age population: there are few ethnic or immigrant communities in Poland, as such as exist are quite small indeed. While Poland as a whole is poorer than the US, there is no large population of severely disadvantaged youth as there is in the US and other developed countries.

That is a very good point that i missed.

This is, plain and simple, right wing conservative claptrap. Stop watching the O'Reilly factor

So you say that the fact that Poland have more morale and values than other European countries doesn't interfere, right?

Values and Morale bring discipline. Look at the top countries: Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Poland. Ireland.

Now look how extremelly low are "Atheist countries" where virtually all value and morale were replaced by political correctness.

Sweden: Worse than Russia.

France: Under Czech Republic

United Kingdom: Well below Latvia or any major asian country.

Why? Because in Sweden, France or United Kingdom the political correctness patrols doesn't allow parents to discipline their kids accordingly. And the values of the society are gone on those countries.

7) Religious education in public schools is a scandalous racket that is fundamentally morally corrupt.

Put prejudices aside and see, again, how atheist education systems scored welll below Poland.

The so called atheist systems of France, England or Sweden are a tremendous failure of underachieved students.

Now look at the performance of the only two countries in the UE that have Religion Classes: Ireland and Poland.

News / Poland have the 3rd best Education System of Europe [49]

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has published its biggest-ever league table of educational attainment in 76 countries, which for the first time includes under-developed and developing nations, as well as richer states.

Poland came in the 9th position overall.

That means that Poland have the 3rd best basic education system of WHOLE EUROPE, just after Estonia and Finland. (Britain?France? Those hyped countries are FAR BELOW Poland). Also, Poland have the 3rd best education of the ENTIRE Western World.

In my understanding, this happens because Poland have the perfect combination of:

1 - A developed education system.

2 - A Country with morale and values (maybe that is because Great Britain scored so low, even with good schools. The political correctness and lack of values damaged the society and kids feel that they don't need to study anymore.)

3 - At Poland people NEED to study or they will have bad lifes. (And this is a GREAT incentive. Today i live in a rich oil monarchy in Arabia that is at one of the bottom places at this ranking. Here people have money to study but most of the native population just don't care for education, since they use the government as ATM machine, and stay uneducated while driving a Maseratti)

Love / Polish girlfriend told me we cant have sex because I'm not religious [40]

but if I just break up with her, I'll feel very bad of myself

So you wanna make sex even if SHE CLEARLY DOESNT WANT, to make you feel good and make HER feel bad?

The words that i would use to describe you and this attitude unfortunately cannot be written here on Polish Forum.

As just remind you: Poland is a free country. You cannot force a woman to have sex. If you try to do that, you are gonna go to jail, and beaten by the other prisoners. And you will deserve that.

Life / Why are Polish so conservative and religious? [240]

Why are Poles so religious?

Because this is part of their culture, it is not bad (in my personal concept, is a huge benefit) and the catholic church was one of the institutions that made the polish resist during their many horrible, difficult moments.

Would you go to Iran and ask why they are religious? Would you go to Israel and ask why they are religious?

No, right? Because this would be a stupid and unrespectful question.

So why make the same question about Poland?

Expats who despise Poland's religious values and traditions have so many other "progressive" and "agnostic" places to chose from.

Very well said, very well said. If you want an atheist society, what are you doing in Poland? Better go to Sweden (before they turn into an Islamic State).

Work / Cost of living in Warsaw with two kids [14]

Remind that the taxes in Poland are pretty high. 3500 Euros gross probably will be around 2800 Euros.

Your life will not be bad, but will be tight on budget. Apartments in a reasonable neighborhood like Ochota will be around 750 Euros per month or more.

History / Politics of Poland in past, present and future; your opinion [21]

Harry, i was considering the percentage of all voters.
If you consider the percentage of those that turned on, then there is the threshold and in that case the SLD have around 8% of the total.

Which still makes them, fortunately, pretty insignificant.
