Love / Polish men are complete doormats (especially after they get married) [125]

Most Polish men swap the unconditional love of their mother who looked after them cleaned, cooked and worried and tied his shoelaces for them for a wife who does exactly the same. The wife has a nesting instinct and can show to everyone that at least she has a man (any man) to look after and that she is not left on the shelf. It seems that women will settle for any man as long as he puts a ring on their finger. For men it's a line of least resistance, do what the woman tells you otherwise who will clean, cook, look after the children for you. Many stay in a loveless marriage for years as it is too hard to walk away and what would the neighbours say and I've put too much money into the house and also who will look after me when I am old and grey and need looking after.

It has nothing to do with feminism, it has to do with survival in a country where women of a certain age who are not married are thought of as 'vampires' and men just need someone to look after them.

Law / Can somebody explain ZUS to me? [40]

If you are near retirement age you can ask ZUS to give you an idea of how much you will get. The amount depends on your earnings and the years you have put in. No one can give you an estimate except ZUS. You could search on-line for the maximum, but it is better to put your money in property.

Love / Foreign Older vs Younger Relationships In Poland [20]

The lady you encountered was not after you personally, but the chance to come to the USA, even though she said to you that it didn't matter. If you had married her and she came to the States, she would have divorced you within months, just after she got her citizenship. It was probably when she found out that you were not rich that she didn't see a future with you. Forget her and move on. This had nothing to do with age, but with her own financial situation. It seems strange that 'you are meant for each other' and the next minute she dumps you.

Loving someone has absolutely nothing to do with age, but with seeing a future together.

Law / A parent born in Poland. Obtaining a Polish birth certificate? [38]

You can get a copy of a birth certificate for a person born in Poland from the nearest main town where they were born. You need to go to Urzad Stanu Cywilnego. You will need as much detail as you can, such as date of birth, names of parents, mother's maiden name. It is possible to apply for this yourself, but you need to complete the form, pay the money and wait. If there is a Polish Consulate in Australia, it may be easier to speak to them so they can do it for you and obtain the certificates from Poland.

You will also need their marriage certificate, if they were married in Poland it is the same procedure, date of marriage, names and mother's maiden name. If they were married anywhere else, their marriage certificate has to be translated into Polish by a sworn translator.

You will also need to have your birth certificate (if it is Australian) translated into Polish by a sworn translator.

In your position I would speak to the Polish Consulate and explain your case to them. For each translation count on 200 pln.

Real Estate / Apartment rental in Poland: Termination of the agreement before the date [27]

If I was renting I would always pay by bankers transfer from one account to another so that there would be proof of payment. All interactions must be recorded i.e. by email, texts or anything, but always on paper. It is always better to have independent witnesses who are mentioned in all correspondence. Never, but never engage in any conversation which might escalate into a shouting match, just act dumb and tell them you don't understand.

Law / Poland's Inheritance Law Without Will [21]

The 6 months limit is for notifying Polish Tax authorities of the inheritance, but since you are not Polish resident this may not apply. Read up on this. You may however, be subject to 19% tax on the sale of the property is you sell it within so many years I think it's 5, but check on this.

Work / Can a foreigner become a police officer in Poland? [11]

You have to be a Polish national, of good character and be physically and mentally fit in order to become a Polish policeman. However, have a look at what is happening in the police force, recently they have been up in arms.

UK, Ireland / Polish passport - UK citizen [16]

The wording 'would not be protected by the British Government' leads me to believe that at that time a person was considered a dual national and that is why, in the country of birth, the British Government could not do anything..

Many Polish people who settled after the war in England, were not stripped of their Polish nationality. They may not even be aware that they are still dual-nationals.

UK, Ireland / Polish passport - UK citizen [16]

It does not follow that your father born in the 1920's had to renounce his Polish citizenship to become British. he might have had dual nationality.

You would have to prove, by documentary evidence that your father was Polish. You have to get his birth certificate and any other documents that prove that at the time of your birth he was Polish.

Life / How to vote in the Polish elections? [23]

The same thing applies to Britons living overseas. They have the right to vote in General elections and referenda and do so.
One thing is the applicable Electoral Law and quite another 'your personal opinion.'

Life / How to vote in the Polish elections? [23]

If you are a Polish national, ask at the Embassy. Polish people living in the UK have the right to vote in Polish elections or referenda.

For voting in local or council elections in Poland you have to live in Poland and be 'zameldowany' at your Polish address.

Life / Fathers 1st name, and mum's maiden name questions in Poland [2]

It annoys the hell out of me too. This is to protect you, as many people can have the same name/surname and even the same date of birth. Father's name and mother's maiden name will only apply to you. People sometimes ask for their dates and places of birth to make it extra secure that they are dealing with the right person.

Law / Opening a Polish Bank Account by a foreigner in Poland. Recommendations. [299]

I have had an account with Alior for well over 10 years. I am a non-resident non-Polish person. Just hand your passport over. You may need a correspondence address in Poland, but that's all.

For a normal current account, money in, money out, I pay 8 pln per month. They also do all my direct debits from the account to pay for accounts such as gas and electricity for my apartment in Krakow.

Law / Does having a Polish Father qualify for dual citizenship? He came from Poland to the UK in 1948 [23]

The most important document to get is your fathers birth certificate. When he was born in Poland he would have been registered. You need to obtain a copy of his birth certificate from the Urzad Stanu Cywilnego in the area. This document will prove that he was a Polish citizen at the time of birth and you are therefore entitled to Polish citizenship through your father. The question of your father becoming a British subject due to naturalization has nothing to do with it as he at that time would have simply become a dual citizenship, unless he renounced his Polish citizenship which is highly unlikely. Whether he had a British passport or not does not come into it. As long as he can prove his Polish nationality/citizenship that is what really matters. If he has any other papers from the time of war or after the war where his nationality is stated it will all help. Also any documents from the church (christening certificates), school certificates anything which proved that he lived in Poland as a Polish citizen.

You will need Polish documents in Polish (birth certificate) and British documents (your birth certificate, your parents marriage certificate) translated by a sworn translator. I have just had a marriage document translated and the price was 200 pln, so you have to factor all costs.. This process will cost you money and will probably take 9 months which will include document gathering, translation, completing all forms, submitting any other documents they may need.

You do not need to hire a lawyer or anyone else. This is a simple process, you are either entitled through your father or you are not. Your father was born in Poland from Polish parents and you are his son so the line of parentage is there. You will be able to complete the forms yourself as they are also in English. You need to get the right forms. Get advice from the Consulate. You should have no problems, but it will take some time.

Real Estate / Renting in Poland - tenants' rights? [51]

I DO hope that she had informed the Tax authorities that she was renting the flat.. No, you have nothing to worry about, if she calls again just tell her that you will tell the tax authorities of the flat and the rent you were paying and the police that she is harassing you. .

Law / Debt in Poland - inheritance after relative death? [14]

You may be liable for the debt if they can find you. If other relatives had already said that they decline their inheritance and they know your address in the Uk the authorities will come for you. Someone has to pay the debts, and you as the only relative who has not declined the inheritance will be liable.

Law / Old Polish money banknotes - what's their value today? [415]

Yes, but I was going off the description. Zloty is the term for Polish money prior to the re-denomination, after that the term is PLN. If someone says they have zloty, I understand it to mean 'old money' and not new money which is termed 'pln'.

Law / Poland's citizenship by descent question. Polish great-great grandfather arrived in the USA as a kid. [76]

JBU1987.
Start collecting any and all documents which prove your father's birth, his school records, his church records, everything and anything you can. I am not sure whether a Canadian can have dual nationality - but check. Once you have got all that try to get your citizenship/nationality confirmed. Go to Urzad Wojewodzki in the town and start the procedures. All your Canadian documents have to be translated into Polish by a sworn translator and you need copies of everything. They take the copies but need to have a look at the originals.

Real Estate / Termination of fixed term lease in Poland [28]

The security deposit will be used for the month's rent. It is unlikely that the landlord will sue you for any damages or bills that are unpaid if you leave the country. The passport border control will not know that you have been renting a flat and have left without settling all your bills.

Real Estate / Polish law on inheritance and real estate [42]

It is very likely that they will be entitled to parts of the property. You must make it clear to them that you will sue them for the cost that they should have been paying to the nursing home. You must seek the advice of a Polish solicitor and present to him all your bills/payments that you have had to make to the nursing home or if you bought anything else for the sister. These costs should be divided up among the family.
