Travel / Where do Polish people fly to for beach vacations in the winter? [34]

Who's we? what percentage of Canadians can afford to holiday in the Caribbean every winter?

Not too sure about stats, but it is quite popular for canadians to travel to the Caribbean in the winter. These week long getaways are not that expensive.

Travel / Hard Candy - Krakow, Poland - reviews? [131]

So one girl escorted me to the bankomat

I ran into a couple of scenarios where bartenders tried ripping me off in poland and other countries. My tactic for situations where you are escorted out of the bar to a bankomat to withdrawal cash is to either just run away (i'm fast) or to leave the bartender some money (ex: 20zl / drink) and then run away. Never had any issues with the police. Once i didn't have my bank card on me and only about 50zl in cash.

As a rule of thumb, i never bring my VISA to a bar and usually my debit card as well, however it is set so I can't withdrawal more than $100/day. I also only keep maybe $200 in my chequing account while the rest of my savings are in the savings account. My debit card is set so i can only withdrawal from my chequing account. I can adjust my chequing account balance via online banking.

Life / The Best Things About Poland [24]

In no particular order,

- strong family life
- Polish society is not infested with the political correctness disease. Yes i do realise this is coming to poland by way of the EU, but at the moment they're ok.

- 3rd world immigrants are few and far between - no race riots (ie: LA, london, paris), hardly any foreigners leaching the system (huge problem in canada, politicians scared to do anything about it for fear of the PC police), no affirmative action, don't have to worry about some of these violent prone groups attacking Poles (see crime stats vs race in USA), don't have to worry (yet) about the erosion of the Polish culture as a result of the flooding of the country of totally different people.

that's it for now

News / The quality of Polish media coverage [50]

Why can't the Polish media just give us straight news?

Why can't any media outlet give us straight answers?

Have you been living under a rock? Do you know what bias means?

News / Repopulating Poland with Ukrainians? [67]

I am glad to see Poland taking a lead in the effort the world needs to make to get it's population under control

I want to see countries that are overpopulated to work on reducing their population. It's really sad to see European countries dwindling in size whereas women in developing countries are popping out kids like there's no tomorrow.

History / Poland's undying debt to Polonia [76]

What about French and British promises to help Poland in 1939? Not that there was anything the limies could have done vs the Germans, but I just thought I had to say this.

Notice how all the polish pfers living in pOland don't ever say anything negative about the polonias help to their families who stayed in Poland.....

Always has to be the Brits stirring up trouble.

News / Dirty deeds of foreign guys in Poland [98]

One persons fun is another persons pest control.....

So i guess it was fun for them since they are British tourists in Poland, not outsourced exterminators hired to deal with these "pests."

Najpierw zwabili go, rozrzucając popcorn, potem kopali go, skakali po nim

^ Sounds like they were enjoying it.

Are the brits tired of shagging Polish prostitutes and urinating in the rynek? Have they found a new past time now?

Americans using Poland to hide from the law!

Kinda reminds me of a limey in poland who was caught molesting little children last year i think. There was a thread about it on here at the time.

USA, Canada / Rodeo Ben the "Polish Cowboy" [50]

Please don't change the topic of this thread, by associating his surname as being tied, to Jewish or German origination.

Kind of hard not to notice this, especially when someone's name is BERNARD LITCHTENSTEIN.

History / What do Poles owe to Jews? [586]

Jason, also keep in mind that Jews collaborated with the soviets during the 1st world war/polish-bolshevik war as well as the 2nd world war when a large chunk of poland fell into the hands of the soviets. Countless poles died and/or suffered because of this treason.

Life / Scars of Communism on Polish culture. [55]

you hear voices in your head???

No.
I've met a few foreigners/people of polish decent who have noticed the same thing while visiting poland.

I always leave space between and never heard anything like that.

That may be because you can't speak polish.

Life / Scars of Communism on Polish culture. [55]

I am forever saddened by the ways Communism has permanently damaged and scarred the culture and the people.

This is true to some extent. I think the partitions also "scarred" Poland/Poles.

More Polish people live outside of Poland than inside Poland

Actually it is estimated that there are 20 million Poles outside of Poland (not sure how "Pole" is defined here: ie both parents Polish? second gen Polish?).

destroyed the ability to think out-of-the box to solve challenges.

False. It actually made people think outside the box (ie: how to deal with shortages/how to acquire goods, "kombinowanie").

When you try to go into the store through one of the forbidden lanes -- they go nuts. You must be trying to steal something -- into the store.

I agree. I sometimes feel like a criminal just walking into a store. I think its common in many euro countries.

What maybe someone will steal some bread or fries or salt in their coats and take it out, or maybe someone going to the Symphony will steal a base violin.

Stealing and cheating was part of daily life during the communist era and the partitions. People don't need to cheat/steal to live anymore, but some do and most like to take precautions against would be thieves.

If Gary or Bill in US gets a brand new SUV or a nice new van, or boat, then Ken says "What a nice boat, Gary." and he works harder and saves his money and gets a boat too. If Przemek gets a nice new car or SUV, Pawel and Monica and his neighbors all wish it would catch on fire.

Overall Poles don't react to someone else's success the same way americans/canadians would, for instance. I think some (Poles) feel what you said ("wish it would catch on fire") but others would be very jealous. Either way, the reaction is negative.

That is good to see because many on this forum believe that Poles do not Queue.

They do queue. I found polish queues to be really annoying as people tend to stand very close, front to back, in most cases touching. It is impossible to have a foot or two of space between yourself and the person behind you ... IMPOSSIBLE ... especially when there is an old babcia standing behind you. And when you leave some space between yourself and the person in front, the people behind you get nervous and quite often i would hear "why doesn't he move forward, there's plenty of room."

Life / Television in Poland - embarrassingly bad? [44]

blatant rip offs

Every country rips off american tv shows. The US is (unfortunately) the epicenter of tv/pop culture/entertainment.

Polish television - embarrassingly bad??

Canadian tv is so bad, so few people watch it that the government has to subsidize (ie steal tax payer money) these shows (ie: "the little mosque on the prairie" - no joke that's the shows title) to ensure that there is canadian content on tv.

it's witty to randomly swear (in English)

Speaking broken english is my biggest pet peeve in Polish TV. They think they are "cool" when they say something in english yet in reality they are butchering the language and making themselves look stupid. I believe they do it "na pokaz" to show that they can "speak" the "international language."

History / Terrible past for the Jews in Poland? [930]

Anti semitism has been a problem all across europe, not just Poland. However you have to keep in mind that Jews were welcomed to Poland several hundred years ago when western Europeans were engaged in pogroms. There was little anti semitism.

Anti semitism became a more serious concern after the partitions of Poland. And also keep in mind how polish jews were not always the innocent angels. They did collaborate with the Soviets which resulted in terrible consequences for the Poles, many could not forget this and as a result jedwabne took place.

It takes 2 to tango.

Language / The shame! I can't pronounce my Polish wife's name (Ola) [69]

What's the closest approximation in English to the "O" in Ola? Please help!

Anglophones are not very good at pronouncing foreign names, most poles know this so don't worry too much. Take some polish classes.

Life / 200zl mandat and 3 points for not wearing seatbelts? [75]

I suppose a quote like 'solid cop' indicates you're American. So, you probably think he was reasonable for not pulling out his gun and shooting me.

I live in canada, limey. There's no need to shoot, a ticket to a cocky limey such as yourself will suffice. Sounds like you think you're above the law in Poland.

Life / 200zl mandat and 3 points for not wearing seatbelts? [75]

100m or 100km - it really doesn't matter how far you drive, you always need to wear a seat belt. It's the law. I'm glad he fined you, solid cop. Go ahead, lose respect for a cop who does his job. You're just bitter that you got fined.
