The Best Things About Poland

I thought I would start a thread about what is good about Poland, /Polish people. To be honest I know very little about Poles/Poland really, but hav been completely shocked and disappointed by what I hav learnt, but....

I'll giv you 3 things that are good about Poland:

1. Th Polish 2 finger Army Salute:

Distinctiv and original. (Did you know that the British invented the modern army salute?)

2. the Rogatywka the distinctiv four-cornered head-dress of the Polish army.





Unique, stylist and distinctive.

3. Golabki

I never, until now, thought of those two Army-related items you cited as distinctive nor stylish.

Is that right?I always thought it originated from medieval times.
2 fingers salute caused Polish soldiers some problems during WW II:
"The two-fingers salute caused problems for Polish units serving with the Allies on the western front during World War II. Allied officers, seeing what they perceived as a Cub Scout's salute, thought that Polish soldiers either were deliberately being disrespectful, or were intoxicated. As a result many soldiers were arrested, until the misunderstanding could be explained. This led to the temporary use of the full hand salute when saluting foreign officers"


Rogatywka is indeed stylish IMO.

I like the things you mentioned but I would prefer it if you used diffeent language at the beggining

If all people in the world were Polish - there would be no wars but any extraterrestial invaders would lose the guerilla war and never come back :)

No, I hav to be honest. -You are a people with self-esteem problems or something, and you don't even recognize your distinctiv 2 fingered salute and your Rogatywka as stylish.

I don't have problems with my country. And don't talk about all Poles. We all have different personalities and views.

Yeah, you going on a Polish forum to tell them what's right and wrong about their country and identity is indicative of a healthy self-esteem on your part. Best thing about Poland? It can't claim you.

I used to believ that romantic story, all to do the visor on a old Knight's Helmet and closing it, meant to be from the Normans, but apparently it started with over-sized Army head dresses about 2-3 hundred years ago. People used to raise their hats when passing a woman or an officer, but that became impractical with these large elaborate head-dresses, so soldiers wer order to merely "clap" the the peak and giv the impression of lifting it. then merely touch it with the hands. The palms down salute came from embarrassed sailors with dirty hands saluting with their palms down to avoid showing their dirty hands.

Those things are pretty lame to be honest.

The best things about Poland are the beer, the food and the beautiful women.....weather is good too, but not this time of year..and the President's moustache, I hope he grows it back.

Also, bison, and storks.,.,,,,oh and travelling by car on long journeys is an adrenaline rush like no other.

In no particular order,

- strong family life
- Polish society is not infested with the political correctness disease. Yes i do realise this is coming to poland by way of the EU, but at the moment they're ok.

- 3rd world immigrants are few and far between - no race riots (ie: LA, london, paris), hardly any foreigners leaching the system (huge problem in canada, politicians scared to do anything about it for fear of the PC police), no affirmative action, don't have to worry about some of these violent prone groups attacking Poles (see crime stats vs race in USA), don't have to worry (yet) about the erosion of the Polish culture as a result of the flooding of the country of totally different people.

What I love about Poland......Is that it's not infested with 3rd world immigrants and I hope it will never suffer the problems of 3rd world immigration.....and become like Britain, France and the rest of Western Europe where you are scared to walk in some ethnic parts of cities and towns.....Poland is a beautiful country with beautiful people...don't let uncontrolled immigration destroy what you have.

The funniest thing about the above two posts is that Poland actually has a more liberal immigration policy than most of Western Europe.

Which therefore means Poland should be more diligent with regards to immigration.

So far, the things I enjoy most about being in Poland (no particular order):

1. Weather - Personally, I love cool/cold and slightly damp with snow.

2. People - The locals, (Gdansk and Torun) have been great so far. My shopping experiences have been pleasant, the government workers helpful and people are warm and approachable.

3. Architecture - While it's more of a European thing I appreciate the brick, art and colors of the region as reflected in the Old Town areas and certain landmarks. While there is some of the gray & black "dinginess" of the apartment blocks that the Soviet-influenced era left, it's pleasant to at least have a range of choices.

Those are my likes for now.....

Since you don't have any, you can call them what you like then.

That must be handy for you.

Standing at a freezing tram stop one night this week watching the locals:

- girls who have worked out how to both dress warmly and still look attractive. This is more difficult than it sounds and needs careful wardrobe choices, particularly if they don't want to hide their good legs

- older ladies dressed elegantly in coat, hat and gloves and as if by magic on whom the snow never settles
- earnest, sober young men with good cheekbones and looks of poetic seriousness
- the pair of swaying clochards counting out tiny coins to see if they can afford another couple of cans from the alkohol sklep

The rattle of a tram in the evening snow, the friendly bell and the politeness of all - a very civilised small experience, but such small pieces of quality are the bricks from which healthy nations are built
