Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [656]

People from Normandy originally come from the North of Europe (via the Vikings)

It was Rollo who actually founded the Duchy of Normandy, I believe he was descended from (or was) a Viking/Norseman.
I think we underestimate the size and influence of the Viking 'empire' (for want of a better word).
The Normans had a fascinating history and obviously had a huge impact on Britain. Fantastic builders, I really like the Norman castles.

The sheer size, scope and influence of the Viking 'empire' (for want of a better word) was amazing.

Life / Polish people are the most ignorant people in the world! [331]

Polish people are the most ignorant people in the world!
You can't really say this about any race! There are problems in the education system and sometimes it doesn't encourage deep thought, but that can be said of the British education system and many other education systems too. Some people are interested in the world outside of home, work and leisure, some aren't. It usually depends on the social/educational status of people as to their level of ignorance, if you are only meeting people from one strata of society they may give the impression that an entire race is ignorant but when you meet people from a different strata your opinions will change. The problem is that in many countries people aren't actively encouraged to think about wider issues, it makes political/social control easier! based on the old Roman method of keeping the masses under control!!

Love / Dating a Polish man - how to impress his mother? [51]

There isn't much you can do about this, some Polish women are very hostile to any non Pole having a relationship with a Polish man. I never could understand this because Polish women who date or marry Non Poles expect to be accepted!!

Just be yourself, she may come round in time especially when she can see you make her son happy.
My ex's Mum and sisters were really great and still are, pity the ex was such a bum!!!!
As long as you and your boyfriend are happy try not to worry about the others!!

anything polish that i can cook easily that might be no fail even for a complete kitchen reject like me :(

Buy some pork steaks, tenderise and flatten them out, roll in a little salt, pepper and paprika, then dip in a beaten egg and roll in bread crumbs( shop bought bread crumbs), fry in oil for about 5-10 mins, turning regularly. serve this with a finely chopped salad and some boiled potatoes. you could also have a dish of yogurt with peeled, grated cucumber.

Use a tenderising steak hammer, you can buy them in any shop that sells cutlery. If you can't get hold of one , just use an ordinary hammer and beat the meat until it's flat!

Love / Dating a Polish man - how to impress his mother? [51]

Try not to let this woman undermine your confidence, I had all that sort of rubbish said to me by Polish women. Your job is a valuable job,be proud of it. Maybe you aren't a domestic goddess but so what? There is more to being a real woman than pandering to a man! If you want to learn Polish do it for you, it never hurts to have an extra language. As for the children bit, if a mother chooses to work that is her choice, it does not make her a bad mother! Sometimes bad things happen and women have to bring up their children alone, having a good job is a lifesaver in this situation. It doesn't matter what happens in Poland, you two live in Canada!

Does this woman really want some whining spoiled 'princess' who expects to be kept! she's a fool if she does! Your fella loves you because your a real woman with some independence, forget about what his family think!

Don't try to fit in too much, because they will play you like a violin;).

This is very true, some Poles will just like giving non Poles a hard time! If you and your guy are happy this is all that matters!

Despite my rather negative comments there are nice Polish women out there and men too, when you meet the nice ones you will feel much more confident!

Love / Dating a Polish man - how to impress his mother? [51]

It goes like this when you date a guy from a different culture, everything seems different and exciting, sometimes much better than your own culture. It's very easy to become immersed in the culture and to believe that people/things from the culture are right and you/ your culture are not! You can lose your sense of 'self' especially if you're young and not terribly confident. Your boyfriend's family came to Canada, they are the ones who have to adapt!!! You are a hardworking young woman of Irish/French heritage brought up in what I am told is a lovely country with a good society, be proud of this!

Sometimes mixed culture relationships work well and are very happy and I hope this is what will happen for you.
However, sometimes the relationships don't work. If you turn yourself inside out to become a replica of a Polish woman, spend your time bending over backwards to please the Poles, you will feel very bitter and cynical if the relationship fails, in fact you will feel a fool.

Poland is just another country, the food isn't great, the language is no better than any other and the women are no prettier or better than any other women, neither are the men!! There are good things about Poland and some of the people are really nice, but ultimately it's no better than any other country or culture!

Many Poles won't think any better of you for trying to adapt to Polish culture and there are some who will just abuse your willingness to be nice. A few basic phrases of Polish are all you need, a couple of easy polish dishes to serve on special occasions and good manners. No one should expect more!

The gloss soon wears off as time passes, there will be things you hate about Polish culture and you will need to be confident as a person in your own right to deal with this. I hope your relationship works out but if it doesn't never feel it was because you were not 'Polish' enough. You are good enough as you are!

luckily we have moved 29 hours away and she can't visit weekly anymore

Sounds like a good move!!!

Just say: This is me. This is how I do things. Like it or hate it. Tough. He loves me.

I've read some of Natasia's posts and she knows what she is talking about, her advice is totally correct!s
IMO 'sisterhood' is not a strong trait among polish women so stand up for yourself!
Your guy loves [b]YOU[/b an Irish/French Canadian! Don't let anyone muck up your relationship with your guy.
Hope the move works out well for you both.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

Abortion needs to be legal in every country and easily available up to 16 weeks!
Availability of the procedure prevents much distress for the woman concerned and goes some way towards safeguarding against late and illegal abortions!
People need to be aware of the need for contraception and know how to use it correctly but when you have ridiculous religions telling people it's a sin to use contraception, it can be hard to get the message across! Ideally we should be more careful about sexual relations but people are people and mistakes happen!

For those people who say abortion is a 'sin' well it's a far bigger sin to bring a child into a 'sh-t' life and possibly condemn several generations to 'sh-t lives'

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

The baby's body was moving.

Load of boll-cks that is not how abortions are carried out!!!

Why stop at 16 weeks.

Unfortunately druggies and alcoholics rarely have abortions as they know there is money to be made from having kids!!!! I have spent many years dealing with the kids from these scumbags, it's not a nice life for the kids and sometimes the next generation suffers too!! These bits of sh-t come from all walks of life and most nationalities and some of them are Catholics too! Don't you dare preach about 'sin' and criticise abortion, just go and see how some kids have to suffer!!!

Life / Why is circumcision not practiced in Poland? [701]

Englishman

Please remember this is 'Polish Forums' not 'Forum' magazine (or Penthouse, Razzle etc..).
Your posts are distasteful and given the topic rather irrelevant! There are other forums for this type of post!

For instance it can bring risks or at least fears of pregnancy and STDs for a woman, which are removed and much reduced respectively if the man doesn't climax.

You need to buy a book on either biology or sexual medicine as this statement is factually incorrect and quite dangerous!

Life / Why is circumcision not practiced in Poland? [701]

Actually they don't. it's a tribal custom usually practised by villagers. Islam condemns it.

Spot on, there are many practices that the Koran either condemns or does not require, as you say, most came from Pre Islamic tribal customs.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

natasia

I'm sorry to hear that you have had such an awful experience, I would say please try to show yourself more compassion, you were young and in a difficult position, that may not be of much comfort though. I do agree that education about both sex/birth control and abortion needs to be far more realistic. We teach sex education in schools but we do it without teaching about responsibility and consequences! it's a short sighted policy. While I am totally pro choice, I also believe that we should be making young people aware that they do not have to be pressurised into sexual relationships and it's okay to say NO. The option of adoption should also be far more widely available too. There should also be extensive counselling available post termination. Bottom line, we should be aiming to drastically reduce unplanned pregnancies thereby reducing abotion/adoption and neglected/abused children.

I would never outlaw abortion, working with the children that I do work with I believe that some people should never be allowed to have children but that's another story.

Leave the decision between the mothers and the doctors

Agreed

Life / Bribery and corruption 'fact of life' in Poland? [152]

I know a few stories about doctors and hospitals being pretty corrupt, but I don't know if it still goes on.

Yes it does, the Polish lad I was 'left ' with needed a knee op last year, when we visited the hospital in Lodz (he hurt the knee more whilst we were visiting his grandparents in Lodz) we were offered the op quickly for 'present'.

The lad in question has also been offered places and a guaranteed degree from various universities, again for a 'present'.
All credit to my 'sort of child' he refused all offers including the knee op.
It happens a lot in Poland but it also happens alot in other countries too.

UK, Ireland / Britain's moral collapse? [99]

Britain's moral collapse

Britain is in much better shape than many places in the world, certainly in better shape than America!!
There are problems in Britain , the society is in a state of change and it might be some time before it settles down smoothly again.

Many of our problems are due to the way the governments have been influenced by the USA and the EU.
Britain has supported America in areas/matters that America has no right to to interfere in? big mistake
Britain has also accepted laws and ideas from the EU that have had a derogatory effect on society.
That said Britain has far fewer problems than the USA in terms of moral standards, lawlessness, gang culture etc....
We also have at least a semblance of democracy, more than the USA or many European countries have!

Too much multi-culti?

There wouldn't be a USA without all of the ethnic groups that have been paramount in building the place.

Too much multi culti

Without the ethnic groups in Britain, services that you like to avail yourself of would be unable to run.
Some of the ethnic groups e.g Chinese, Indians have far fewer benefit claimants than white Britons or other white immigrants, Poles included.

Thats what i intend to do lolol. Just about five more yrs!

By all means finish your education here, lets face it, despite it's bad points it's still superior to the Polish education system. Lets just hope your family pays the £27,000 fees for that education like I am for each of my children!!!!

Love / Adultery- Is it ok for Polish women [41]

It's not really a question of whether Polish women accept adultery, both the men and women are equally guilty of committing adultery, it's not one gender alone and it's not exclusive to Poles. Where you get any group of people who work away from their families for long periods of time it's a risk, people get lonely.

Love / Age difference in Dating a Polish - Is it ok for Man 27years to date Polish Lady 39years? [19]

Many 18/19 year old girls may be physically mature (just) and may be able to bear a child but that does not mean that they have the emotional maturity to handle sex or to have any kind of equal relationship with a man 19/20 years older than her. The average 18 year old has very little experience of life and often has had no time to fully formulate her opinions about various subjects or her values and principles, consequently she is much more open to exploitation and 'moulding'.

A man who is considerably older could easily manipulate both the girl and the relationship to his advantage. How can you debate or discuss the world when someone has the upper hand in experience and learning opportunities. I'm not against age gaps per se because by the time people reach their late 20's they have usually gained enough experience and education for the gap to be less of a drawback. It's the ability to exploit that is disgusting.

As for your 'cringing' about the woman being 52, she could be stunningly beautiful, you can't always say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I have always thought that white men age appallingly badly, at 18 the thought of a 37 year old white man would have made me heave but if my mates had gone after one my objections to the relationship would not have been based on my idea of physical beauty but on the fact that the guy was in a position to exploit because physical attraction is subjective.

What exactly do YOU get out of a relationship with an 18 year old other than sex?
Can't you see that an older woman e.g 30 would have so much more to offer and still be beautiful.

Life / Bad Polish mothers [35]

actually that Pelka case was v v disturbing - one reason that he did not attract more attention from authorities is that his clothes were clean and ironed

Quite a difficult case because none of the authorities seemed to want to be involved. The teacher who first raised the problem should have contacted her union as well, they could have advised her on how to get the social services and senior management of the school to do something to help.

There are a lot of little lard buckets now yeah same everywhere when fastfood becomes cheaper than home cooking then the problem starts it will happen in poland if enough children live to need solid food

A problem that needs rectifying everywhere these days, we need proper home economics lessons in schools!!! and to limit fast food outlets severely, stick a load of tax on them and make it cheaper to eat healthy food!

Life / Bad Polish mothers [35]

I have read quite comprehensively about the case because of the type of work I do. Obviously the death of the child id down to the Mother and her partner however the head master of the school should have been onto the police and social service every day until the child was properly assessed or removed.

I appreciate the class teacher was young and inexperienced and may have been scared to kick up a fuss, hence the union may have been able to help.

There were chances missed!

USA, Canada / Why indian origin woman as Miss America and never Polish origin? [40]

The reason she won is because the judges thought she was the prettiest girl!! She is beautiful by any standards.

Don't get me wrong - she is very nice, but not stunning

Not fat she just looks like a real person not a barbie doll! You don't have to be anorexic to be pretty!

UK, Ireland / Agnieszka Pomaska, beautiful Polish politician [43]

I know that Polish women are on average much better looking than most nationalities, but generally politicians of either aren't lookers.

Is this really relevant??? A politician's appearance has nothing to do with their ability to represent people efficiently.
Your sexual preferences are of no relevance either ( there must be other sites for 'perving'). Would you seriously vote for a politician because they were 'fit'!!!??

UK, Ireland / Agnieszka Pomaska, beautiful Polish politician [43]

@ Kaz, I don't know about Poland but here in the UK the number of people who can be bothered to vote has been declining for years. Everything that can help get people interested in politics has to help. That could include getting in some more attractive candidates, such as Agnieszka P.

I agree that there is a growing apathy towards politics and political parties in Britain. Making politics into a 'beauty contest' isn't going to help though; we had all that idiocy with 'Blair's Babes'. It's that type of game show politics that has increased apathy among voters.

Candidates should be appointed on their ability to do the job well, looks, gender, ethnicity should not be determining factors.

Setting aside the rights and wrongs of her comments

This is exactly what you shouldn't do!! her comments showed a lamentable lack of knowledge regarding the economic situation and education systems in both Poland and Britain. The comments were sensationalist, to attract attention they offered no solutions to anything!

it is not because Poles are better educated or harder worker it is because pay masters can pay less it is a race to bottom nothing more, she is ignorant of the issues of working people.

Exactly. You'd think that polish politicians would be as concerned about wages for working people in their own country. Poles shouldn't have to move all over the world to try to find a living wage.

These two quotes are far more pertinent to the real economic situation. Ms Pomaska would achieve more by talking to people who understand what is happening in both countries.

I agree that many of the comments by British politicians are wrong but Ms Pomaska has not helped the situation with her stupid sensationalist comments. The woman is doing nothing to help Poles in either Britain or Poland by making ignorant statements that fail to address the real issues. This kind of talk will encourage not discourage scapegoating.

That said my main issue with the OP's thread is that looks should not be a voting issue, whatever the gender of the candidates.

She is a politician after all in this age and place you don't expect politicians to address the real issues.

I expect them to at least try! I would also expect some insight into important issues.

In my opinion that kind of talk discourage worse cases of scapegoating by politicians, they are a queer breed those politicians.

I agree politicians can be odd at times but her comments will just cause further
rows.
