Life / Poland no Unemployment benefits after paying taxes for 20 years [41]

If they have very low/ no income , yes. But I don't know the rules. I've been unemployed few times so I know the rules, but income based benefits are social care, and I never applied there.

I just checked and you have to be in bad situation, social worker comes and verifies.

Well, as we are discussing Poland, Polish citizens need to have been employed for at least 365 days in the last 18 months to be able to get benefit in Poland. I guess this applies to EU citizes as well. Guy had almost half a year to register and he forgot?

Life / What's the climate and food like in Warsaw? (I am a student from India) [10]

For whole year round you will need clothes for almost every weather that is on Earth. You come in September so most important would be Autumn outfits, sweaters, long sleeve shirts, waterproof jacket, waterproof shoes, some t-shirts. For winter just take some things you own and like, if you have good hiking shoes, you could take them. But heavier and bulkier stuff you can buy here.

History / Why is the Battle of Grunwald celebrated more than the Battle of Lubiszewo? [29]

I would say battle was popular by then, Matejko's painting and Kraszewski's book already existed. And all that was written, painted while - Poland didn't exist on the map and was partially under German and Austrian Occupation and also 500 years anniversary was approaching.

Back to the point I think battle was very symbolic but also very real turning point at our history.

Law / Proving to English family court that it's legal in Poland to put a false name on Birth Certificate [38]

I don't know any "legal words" in English", but

Jeżeli nie nastąpiło uznanie dziecka3) lub sądowe ustalenie ojcostwa

basically means: if nobody claimed paternity and or the paternity was not ruled by court

wpisuje się do aktu urodzenia dziecka jako imię ojca

It is written in Birth Certificate as fathers name

imię wskazane przez przedstawiciela ustawowego dziecka,

a name chosen by Child's Legal Guardian

a w braku takiego wskazania - jedno z imion zwykle w kraju używanych

if none is chosen - one of the names commonly used in country

oraz jako nazwisko ojca i jego nazwisko rodowe - nazwisko matki,".

and as father's surname and his family surname - mother's surname

z odpowiednią adnotacją w rubryce "Uwagi".

with proper annotation in "Uwagi" secttion

USA, Canada / Why do Americans (and Canadians) hate Polish people? [226]

What you keep forgetting is that dollar is 3 zł, euro 4 and pound 5. And you can hitchhike home from EU. On the other hand people think why would I humiliate myself in ISA embassy if I can go somewhere else and spend my money there.

Don't forget to see "szkieletor". This building site has been waiting for somebody to finish it for more than 20 years. It's not abandoned though.

History / Restoration of Poland's Monarchy? [40]

Titles were just "szlachcic" which means either nobleman or member of gentry ( there are some heated discussions on this forum , about which is correct).

About monarchy, it may work where it already exists or where there is lineage and tradition. In Poland partitions and earlier elections of kings means we have in last 440 years we had more than 200 years of elective kings, more than 40 of presidents and 200 of not existing and having forced government.

Genealogy / Trying to find old friend from Lubin, Poland [7]

Try nasza klasa(our class), n-k.pl it used to be "polish facebook" few years ago, and was created as a tool to find classmates. It still existsand you can seatch schools, and sign to classes, but it is not as widely used. It is possible your friend has an account there, and still gets notifications.

And you could write an old-fashioned letter , maybe his parents still live there.

Language / The meaning of some Polish Diminutives [23]

"Kasia" is usual way to refer to Katarzyna when she is young or a friend, it's short nice form used by anybody who is on first name basic.

"Kaśka" is augmentative not diminutive. It is often used by teenagers to show they are not young and sweet, can used be when referred to someone you don't like. Some people treat this form as usual form to refer to them, some people hate it.

Kasiulka is rarely used , either for a young child or in very close relationship,
Katarzynka is more-less like above

And kotku is not diminutive of Katarzyna, it's kitten. ( could be used like sweetheart, honey)

Travel / Solo Traveler to Krakow in August - Random Questions/Thoughts [9]

1) Kraków is a tourist city. There are hundreds of East Asian tourists every day. Make sure you have a camera and take a picture every 10 seconds and you will fit in ( a stereotype of them).

2) I'd say learn few polite words and switch to English with anything more complicated than good morning/ thank you / etc.
3) Well I don't know about typical Krakow day. The way I see it it's usually do to work/ uni, go home, eat dinner, spend time with family/ sleep. But if you have more time you can see more:

- you can walk along a river
- you can visit less obvious historical places/ museums
- you can vistit Nowa Huta
- you can go for a one day trips to Wieliczka Salt Mine/ Auschwitz/Zakopane
- you can slow down and not rush to see all "must see" places

Language / RUDE word form conjugation + communicating on facebook in Polish [15]

I don't post like that but I think I would use either full sentence - in present or past (pieczemy ciasto z x , piekłyśmy/piekliśmy ciasto z x)

And you can translate "baking with x" as "pieczenie z X " (noun instead of participle).

Language / RUDE word form conjugation + communicating on facebook in Polish [15]

the difference between robić i zrobić is called aspect en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammatical_aspect#Slavic_languages

pier..... is a word that can mean anything, and I think you mean zapier.. -dolił (perfecitv), -dalał (imperfective)

And literally I would translate your facebook status : "piekąc ciasto z x I y", but it doesn't feel natural.

Kamieniec Podolski is inverse of for example Malbork- build by somebody else against Poles at Land that is now Polish.

Well, we now show how impressive our enemies were, and travel to see what Polish people (or Commonwealth ) build.

Food / 'Wigilia', the traditional Christmas Eve supper in Poland [77]

It's the first time I've seen or heard of croquettes at the 12 dishes list. Maybe it's because the are so usual , nobody thinks about them as something special, while not as traditional as pierogi. And not healthy like "ryba po grecku"- that I've seen on the diet 12 dishes lists.

History / 'Prehistory' Celts in Southern Poland [20]

Zakopane literally means buried/hidden in earth (or snow) (but without grave context).

And while while it is possible there are even now descendents of those BC Celts living in this area, you shouldn't search for Celts if you want to find something about IX-X century in lands where there is now Poland,

I'd read about Great Morawia or Vistulans and Lendians instead

History / 'Prehistory' Celts in Southern Poland [20]

Well, I never thought about it. I don't know any official sources, but some people suggest that we were first Christianized by Cyryl and Metody . You would find some relics from pre Mieszko's baptism (Poland became officially Christian in Roman way) but they are from Morawian or Czech rule of the place. (and they were supposed to be "Roman")

But those are Slavs not Celts

History / 'Prehistory' Celts in Southern Poland [20]

No, that link was about Przemyśl, which is east from Zakopane (all way to border east)

Are you interested in christianity before 966 or in Celts? because all the data suggests Celts were here between V BC and III AD /I know nothing It's what Internet says/

So you can find information about Calts in Małopolska/Podhale or about Christianity before Mieszko in that area. And what do you mean by Romanised?

History / Questions regarding Barka [6]

Barka is mostly sang in churches or other gatherings when something is about John Poul II, it could also be at something about young priests, or seminars, or vocation , or at priest's anniversary of vows or when reading about events in song are read in mass, or at St Peter's day ,or just at random.
