USA, Canada / Emigrate from the USA - the sequence of events [207]

My point is that we are in a recession, but the picture you paint is that we are in dire straights and this is simply not true.

Perhaps you don’t see it as it happens on a daily basis to you and you’re used to it but for me the change is obvious seeing how people used to shop 10 years ago vs. now, haw many more people on the streets etc.

I live in Boston and there are new construction sites every day and the stores are always packed

That suppose to prove what exactly? In the 80’s stores were also packed in Poland yet there was nothing to buy. People shop differently these days’ only basic necessities.

We've always had poverty and always will.

Not as much, seeing a bum once in a while begging is one thing but have you go to stores recently? I have people are watching every penny these days. Seeing how one was treated recently at a car mechanic shop in Chicago was a real eye opener for me, no compassion whatsoever for the poor soul, it’s not the America I visited a decade ago. Things really changed there.

Are you saying you don’t have poverty problem? I suppose you have no homeless people either? If you mean starving as in famine then no but there’s plenty of American families out there who are forced to make a hard choice and their kids have to skip meals just so they can get by as living from paycheck to paycheck is not enough anymore. Are you denying that? I wonder why that is.

He's in dire straits, most of us are not.

Most of you are, you simply choose to close your eyes to what’s happening out there. Blame the bad economic decisions of both political parties who cater only to select few on the average Joe’s laziness as if that’s the culprit. Face it, if you don’t reverse the trend it will lead to even worse economic reality for your citizens than that of the third world countries, your perceptions won’t help you to turn the things around either, neither will calling me names.

You’re kidding right? 50 million without access to healthcare and God knows how many starving each day and you think of yourself as ………. LOL. No wonder people start abandoning the sinking ship and we have threads like this.

History / "Westerner's" most ridiculous beliefs about the time of communism in Poland [73]

oxon: Polish people do not embrace British culture. (James Bond is just pure drivel.)

Bollox, That’s probably it’s the only character he knows from the British cinema of that time. The reason for that is because it was embraced and produced by Hollywood but I’ll bet he never heard of Simon Templar also played by Roger Moore (The Saint) very popular in Poland and shown on polish TV in late 60’s early 70’s. Another example that comes to mind is The Avengers with Diana Rigg and Patrick Macnee also appeared on polish TV at that time. Contrary to his simplistic view American presence on polish TV was not limited to the ever so popular Westerns but included other genre as well. Detective series like Kojak, Colombo, not to mention the war movies the likes of The Guns of Navarone, The Dirty Dozen, Where Eagles Dare etc. all showed by state run Polish TV almost as soon as they were released. Chances are that whatever his parents’ watched at that time so did ours.

Life / Polands new immigrants from the West. [31]

Poland is being viewed as the land of opportunity for hard up PIGS.

Land of opportunity? Latest Poland’s official unemployment rate is at 12.5% and steadily rising compared to the 20% in 2003. One has to keep in mind that a significant amount of Poland’s labor force moved on to greener pastures when some of the European countries opened up their labor markets for them and that’s at the time when the world’s economies were in a reasonably good shape. Where do you see this opportunity you speak of?

The new wave will be here for quality of life, better to earn buttons in a cheap country, then have no prospects in your own country, they are on the way, you can quote me on this in 6 months.

Worlds’ economies are in turmoil, labor market is just the reflection of that reality. The greed of the banking institutions as well as that of the corporate world trying to save a buck or two in labor costs is what got us there in the first place. This problem will persist for quite some time into the future. I don’t see Poland or any other European country being able to absorb the labor force from abroad to make enough of the difference to keep the masses quiet for much longer or get us out of the mess we all find ourselves in. Imagine how angry the crowds will be upon their return when they come back bitterly disappointed by the empty promises of the likes of you who promise them a land of milk and honey where there is none. Although shifting the labor force from one European region to another worked to a certain extent in the past it’s no longer the case. I see chaos and mess protests in the near future engulfing all of Europe, Europe bickering and ethnic tensions rising, all due to the lack of work and opportunity which will be EU’s downfall (a good thing in my opinion). Poland is in the same boat as the rest of Europe, no worse off than some perhaps but a far cry from the land of milk and honey that you paint it to be.

Poland is seen as the land of opportunity as Pol gov have promoted it as unaffected by the crisis.

Keeping unemployment rate at reasonable level is not the same as creating new opportunities for domestic labor force let alone for the influx from abroad. In that aspect neither the previous nor current government of Poland do a squat except for exporting its labor force abroad where it was needed at that time and relieving the pressure on domestic front appeasing their masters in the process and boast about their achievements while haply relegating themselves to the role of a obedient vassal of the EU’s empire instead of being a full partner state and seeing themselves as equal. Not very persuasive PR campaign even to a desperate foreigner seeking work. If the **** hit the fan today, Poland is in no position to absorb its own citizen labor force currently residing and working abroad let alone a foreign one.

Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

Or am I wrong?

Yes you are. Faith and traditions are essential building blocks for the society to work for the greater good of one’s homeland, even the ancients knew that. The former is just a bit modernized version of the latter conveying the same massage. Many people today, especially the politicians are eager to see Poland only as one of the "lands" in secular EU equating the first with Catholicism and second with Paganism making them both seem as an outdated concept in the process, but is it?

Law / Citizenship of Poland can be obtained through the blood line but my ancestor could lose it in the past [45]

I see that the two resident polonophobs of this forum are trying to discourage you in your quest as usual, do not be intimidated by what they are saying Dave. Good news is that neither of them is an expert on polish immigration law nor Polish themselves for that matter. If the Brazilian whose ancestors emigrated from Poland in 1920’s got confirmation of his Polish citizenship (he wrote about it somewhere on this forum) I don’t see why can’t you. Polish traditions have been passed on in your family through generations, your Polish is good enough, that’s half the battle right there.Your mother should get her confirmation of Polish citizenship first, that's the way he got his.

Law / Polish Passport and Polish Citizenship (dual with American) [14]

What paperwork would I need?

While you wait for your dads' documents don't forget your own. The document that will ultimately confirm the information contained in the application is your own birth certificate which btw is in English. If the document is a foreign documents it is necessary to translate it into Polish by a sworn translator. It is possible to use the services of a professional translator in the U.S., but then such document must undergo consular legalization unless it was originally issued with apostille clause . Any Document that was translated should be submitted in person to the consulate to certify it making it legally acceptable in Poland before you submit them with your application for confirmation of citizenship, there is a $40 fee for that service. Also a copy of your current ID as well as some document legally testifying to your current marital status, which are usually obtained at the Secretary of State office, both of those will be in English so translate them and certify them as well.

Law / Polish Passport and Polish Citizenship (dual with American) [14]

Am I qualified for citizenship?

You are Polish by blood, you should have no problem obtaining Polish passport provided you have your dads paperwork in order. He did not lose his citizenship either by being naturalized but the process might take some time if you don't have proper documents on hand. Start working on it as soon as possible if you plan on going to school in Poland anytime soon. The embassy staff are not known for being expedient in those matters or very helpful over the phone,a trip to the nearest consulate in person is requirwd to get the process rolling.

Anyone every get this from their wife or girlfriend they live with?

I don’t really mind rearranging the room, even if I don’t like the new layout. It’s kind of hard to miss the new location of 60” TV or bed but what gets under my skin is the kitchen, every three months like clockwork the cupboards are rearranged. To find a spoon, beer opener or coffee cup can be a real challenging to put it mildly. By the time you get used to the new location it’s rearranged again! I think they do it out of spite.

Then you’re already a rich man, take a good look at your walls, some riches can’t be measured in material possessions but somehow I don’t expect you to have a picture of Jesus on your wall anytime soon. It’s called religious or cultural difference.

Life / What's wrong with Poland? I don't see anything. [121]

All I've learned here is that English speaking Americans of vaguely Polish descent hate Poland for reasons they cannot explain.

Explanation is rather simple; they’ve been called Pollacks all their lives so they have this need to fit in. Unfortunately bashing is the only way they know how to emphasize how patriotic they are about their adopted country. It’s low self esteem on their part; they simply mimic the behavior of their friends.

Life / Are Polish natives intolerant of foreigners who do not properly speak the language? [30]

pointing out that other people are racist, too, doesn't help at all.

Neither does the

Someone told me that Polish natives are intolerant of foreigners

yup that's really a credible story.

This is a true story: my friend Wendy went over to Poland to test her Polish speaking skills. She said that some guy told her that she wasn't saying it right and go back to the United States.

He probably heard the same in the U.S

She told me that Poles are cruel people.

He told the same story about the Yanks and the cat is out of the bag so to speak.

USA, Canada / Getting a VISA to USA by a Polish person nowadays [339]

my point is that if you get a work permit to work in the usa, attaining citizenship is very doable if you are a good worker and obey the law.

On a work visa? Surely you jest. On a work visa alone you can’t apply for permanent resistance let alone for citizenship.

Is it? Then how come you have this illegal immigration problem now and not let’s say way back in the sixties? Could it be all the changes in policies which make an impact on perception and general feeling of those that wish to go there? I wonder.

News / Anty-Polish v column is located in White House [88]

In the town of Sedziszow, where my grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins lived, the townspeople burned down the town hall after the war so no records of Jewish ownership could be proven.

Honestly all I can say is that Larry Cohen is full of sh**. During the occupation 70% of the buildings in town were more or less destroyed including the town hall. When the Red army reached the doorstep of the town the retreating German army destroyed the rest, simply blowing it all up, the train station, railroad tracks etc. Most of the local Jews were sent to Belzec during occupation. No mention of 30 or so local Jews that were hidden by the local Polish population either; in all likelihood probably his own family as he claims to be a descendent of the survivors from that area. Funny how the account of those days is changed by those who never been there themselves.
