Off-Topic / Ukrainian language [50]

Feel free to use Polish or English in Ukraine and don't worry - you will be understood. But if you add a few words in Ukrainian, it will always be appreciated. The locals, wherever you are or go, like when you show that you care. There were no known cases of somebody losing mind or having brain explosion for learning a few foreign words.

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

Just to bring back some historical facts to you, Polonius:

According to legend Luchesk dates from the 7th century. The first known documentary reference dates from the year 1085. The town served as the capital of Halych-Volynia until the foundation of Volodymyr-Volynsky.
The town was founded around a wooden castle built by a local branch of the Rurik Dynasty. At certain times the stronghold functioned as the capital of the duchy, but since there was no need for a fixed capital in medieval Europe, the town did not become an important centre of commerce or culture. In 1240 Tatars seized and looted the nearby town but left the castle unharmed. In 1321 George son of Lev, the last of the line, died in a battle with the forces of Gediminas, Grand Duke of Lithuania, and Lithuanian forces seized the castle. In 1349 the forces of Casimir III captured the town, but Lithuania soon retook it.

Casimir III came 3 centuries later.

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

"Luk" in Ukrainian means "bow" (as a military equipment). Onion in Ukrainian is "cybulia". Chefk1958 asked about the last name "Luckowich". There is a city in Ukrainian Galicia region (known as Halychyna) called Lutsk, which I think has the same root as the family's name.

Love / My Polish wife's family hate me. Maybe it is because I'm black. Advice needed. [87]

I need advice on how to deal with this problem. I am so ashamed and embarrassed that Poland has so many racists

I don't know how you came from your parents not liking your fiancee to many racists in Poland?! You should be ashamed of yourself for making such inappropriate and wrong conclusions. Many times parents stick their noses where they don't belong. If you love the guy, do your thing and if your parents are parents, they will understand. Good luck and, please, stop making these generalizations.

News / Poland and Russia in military alliance - Is that even possible? At least temporary? [69]

How can Poland ally itself with Russia, if the latter multiple times in the past invaded it, took away freedom, eliminated millions of people, trampled culture, destroyed churches, etc.? How can Russia be even trusted with an alliance if the international agreements for it are nothing. Within the two months it violated multiple accords that exist among the civilized countries. How many military agreement have Russia broken in the past.

Another thing that Poland should be aware of is that Serbian chetniks are ultimately Poland's enemies. Serbian chetniks or whatever is the name of these Neanderthals want to restore Yugoslavia, which they already tried using genocide in the 1990s. They realize that alone they cannot do it and they need Russia. Russia is the same terror and expansion driven genocidal machine that needs to weaken Europe in order to preserve Russia's own existence, because in the world of competition and democracy it simply cannot exist. It will implode. Both these groups, Serbian chetniks and Russian imperialists, therefore, have the same goal.Important for Poland is to boost its defense potential, which is already being done, and work for stronger Europe, more so as Poland is becoming more and more powerful member and is gaining more influence within the EU. Poland, please, remember: RUSSIA IS A LAND OF LOCUSTS: IT LIVES TO DESTROY - NOT TO BUILD. This knew our fathers, grandfathers, we and the generations to come. All its history it was a terror state, poisoning the surroundings. Not for me to tell you that. Keep Poland safe!

Love / What do you like most about Polish girls? :) [120]

Polish women are very attractive. Those, whom I met, had strong familial values. Of course, women are women and they often (read always) enjoy being princesses and having a servant nearby to do whatever they please in exchange for 10 minutes of love here and there, but this is what it is.

Oh yes, and another one: you can never get them to wear a dress or a skirt

You have probably dated a guy.

Just be thankful she isn't your next door neighbour.

I am. It will probably take me a while to be able to go to a forest again :)

News / Does Poland support the idea of Slavic unity? [142]

(Btw Bismarck had a wonderful idea about the balkans...build a wall around it and forget it)

He was wrong. He haven't had a chance to meet Crowie. He would have realized then that no wall, no memory loss would be of help :)

News / Polish vodka as a mean of protest [49]

Hugh Laurie asked to boycott the Olympic games in Russia by not buying its produce due to, among others, outrageous laws concerning LGBT community. In case of the substitution for the strong alcoholic drink he suggested to buy Polish:

Yes, alright, Russian vodka is ok if you need to clean the oven. For drinking, it must henceforth be Polish.

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

:))) But then men turn from banana-shaped into a dried apricot form and the hour-glasses fly away to search egg-plants. There should be some balance, DE ;)

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

I don't know what was its name, but it is quite expensive and the bottle shaped in a pear or drop-like form. It was really smooth. It almost felt like water. Really nice. With a raspberry to chew on. Yummy

Food / What's your favorite Polish coffee? [75]

Either Maxwell House or, sometimes, Nescafe.

Polonius was asking about coffee, not black junk suspended in water. Don't dare to offend coffee by calling it by these hideous names, Wroclaw.

News / Tragedy in Russia - shouldn`t Poland declare national mourning? [41]

however many Russians read online forums nowadays and I think it's very inhumane to be throwing politics in here.

Oh come on! We have to speak up. There was silence with the submarine on this forum, while wives and mothers of the drowned soldiers desperately cried seeking the justice in sold-out courts. Now, there will be silence, when 50 kids and adults perished just like that (no natural disaster, no war, no disease). Tomorrow there will be another tragedy and you will still be silently mourning? People need to influence however one can to change these circumstances whether in Russia, Ukraine, Poland or the USA.

News / Tragedy in Russia - shouldn`t Poland declare national mourning? [41]

I brought my condolences to all the families and I feel their pain and loss. But someone has to say something at least trying to change this BS. More kids will drown if we will just mourn and keep silent. How can a country be so ruthless to its own citizens by spending billions on the wars, both military, economical and informational, when its people are dying like flies on a peaceful river? It produces up-to-date rockets, but let others travel by 56 years old ships. My say will be more helpful to these people than when I be trying to be "polite".

News / Tragedy in Russia - shouldn`t Poland declare national mourning? [41]

The most important is to invade Georgia, send crap into the space, interfere in the well-being of other states. Who cares of those mothers, kids, upgrading a ship built in 1955 or a rusted submarine "Kursk"? At least the tanks don't sink - that's the most important. Indeed, a "mighty" state.

Genealogy / Gawryluk family tree [6]

Hi Diane. I am from Ukraine. There is a little town called Rudno near Lviv (major center of western Ukraine). Today it is a part of one of Lviv's districts.

uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A0%D1%83%D0%B4%D0%BD%D0%BE
It has 2 churches and a Ukrainian Catholic seminary; 7200 inhabitants; train which go from Lviv to Mostyska has a station there.
Gawryliuk is quite spread around last name in western regions. I have never heard of Radno either and Rudno is the one that immediately comes to mind. Hope it will help.

Life / Why is circumcision not practiced in Poland? [701]

Many males die of prostate cancer - why not cut prostate at birth?
Appendix gets inflamed and leads to appendicitis, why not have this part of body removed in infants?
To your knowledge, prepuce produces special waxy secretions that are bactericidal and protect penis from infections. If someone is a slop, it doesn't matter if one has one's dick in a 95% alcohol all the time - he will get infected sooner or later. You don't cut your ears off just because some wax, dust and dirt accumulate naturally there, do you? You clean them. The same with penis.

Why are you so backward and don't follow their advice?

Sorry, you did. My fault.

if it drove a 60K car...

And 60K stands for miles, not dollars ;)

Medical science has proven the health benefits of circumcision yet Poles refuse to practice it?

For people like you the doctors suggest lobotomy, aka brain circumcision. Why are you so backward and don't follow their advice?

UK, Ireland / Polish and East European prostitutes in the UK [240]

What a retarded question is that? The circumstances make people go for drastic measures to earn the living, not their origin. Look at Paris or London 1750-1900 - they was full of prostitutes, more so than any Slavic-speaking country out there, or together taken. Once the conditions improved the women/men are more likely to engage in something else. Take away the jobs from the "Western-speaking" countries and you will see what will happen. We are people and we earn the way we can to support ourselves under given conditions.

News / Poland's Krab Howitzer (the 155mm gun) Has Passed the Test! [49]

I think it is sad to be proud over arms sales.

I agree. Especially, if one looks at some of the countries to which they are sold. Most of them have current military conflicts or a dictatorial regime. On the other hand, it is nice when a state develops its own weapons for the purposes of defense or counter-attack.
