Genealogy / Biskupin, powiat Zninski, Poland [3]

I'm trying to find some one that is familiar with a village in Kujawsko-Pomorskie named Biskupin. My paternal grand-mother was born there in 1869. The story goes that when she was a girl her job was taking care of geese. In 1999 I was on a two-week bus tour of Poland and was taken to this area. I'm not referring to the famous Iron-age fort that was discovered in 1933 and ultimately reconstructed. We went through it but then the tour guide checked his road map and we all were taken to a village having two rows of small dwellings. He stated that according to his map, this is Biskupin. One glance was enough to tell me that this village was only about 50 years old. Thus, it appears that Biskupin was elsewhere in the old days.

I wish to know what happened to the old Biskupin. Perhaps it was too close to the lake (Jezioro Biskupińskie) and was prone to severe floods. Maybe it was razed and excavated by archaeologists. My grand-mother never knew about the discovery of the prehistoric fort because she and her husband immigrated to the US in 1890 and subsequently had ten children, one of which was my dad. Her maiden name was Agnieszka Bukowska and was one of 14 siblings.

If anybody can explain this mystery I would be most grateful. Reply in Polish or English, it doesn't matter.

Pozdrawiam

USA, Canada / MAJEWSKI RE-ELECTED HAMTRAMCK MAYOR [4]

I used to go to Hamtramck many years ago. St. Florian's Church is awesome. On Joseph Campau Street there was a shop called Polish Art Center that was run by people named Kalenkiewicz.

Majewski? There was a physician in Toledo by that name. His office was close to St. Anthony's Church on Nebraska Avenue. My uncle, who was a cigarette smoker, was told by Dr. Majewski "If you are going to continue smoking don't bother coming to me anymore".

USA, Canada / Pierogi Festivals across the States [17]

Didn't know abou that one either. My wife, daughter, son-in-law went to the Polish festival in Millwaukee and were very disappointed. The beer was warm and you only got a 6 oz. cup for $7.00. Entertainment was not in Polish genra.

In September, 2009 we went to a Polish festival in Wyandotte, Michigan at a Polish parish. The music was very good. There was a dance floor. As for food, there was a sit-down dinner in the school basement and snack foods, games of chance for kids, bingo for all. It's a fund-raiser for the parish. The little church is very ornate and was visited by Pope John Paul II during one of his U.S. jaunts.

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

Do you know it's possible to drink your liver away?

English only

I thought the literal translation of "na zdrowie" is "to your health". A reply to this is "pic zbogiem" (drink with the Lord) or "najlepszego" (good luck).

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

wicz meaning son of john in Polish.

Perhaps you mean Janowicz.

I've been searching about my surname NEITZKE

Never saw it spelled that way but I know a Naitzke family.

My great great grand dad antone tabor married a sofia or zofia paluch 9/10/1861 in jazwiny, poland have more information?

My Altlas/Gazateer shows 7 villiages named Jaźwiny in Poland. My dictionary defines 'tabor' as an army camp with trenches. The gazateer shows one village named Paluchy.

I'm pretty sure there is a Paluch music publishing firm in Chicago.

What is the meaning of my maiden polish last name? Radek

The word 'rad' means to be glad or pleased.

hi ,my husband got teased alot when he was younger for his surname as it was Chamczyk and he told me it means someone who is mean or stingy or something like. Is that true?

'Chamski' translates to boorish. The word stingy is skąpy in Polish.

By coincidence, that was my paternal grand-mother's maiden name.'Buk' is Polish for beech tree. There are about 80 villages in Poland that begin with Buk-.

There are two towns named Stargard. Stargard Szczeciński, and Stargard Gubiński. Riewald sounds German.

As for Nowy Ręczaje, that's the way it was spelled in a photo caption that appears on panoramio.com.

I like to browse images of Poland on this site, some of the photos were taken early in the morning before the mist has evaporated, which gives a rather ethereal effect.

Language / Declension of town names in prepositional phrases in Polish [22]

Hooray! I just found a webpage that lists many town names and in the text, they are printed in the locative case. The URL is: lodzkie.travel

Now, maybe I can figure out the mechanics of Polish locative nouns.

Dzięki za wasz pomoc dobrolitwy.

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

That explanation sounds quite plausible. There were many Lewandowski's that immigrated to Toledo, Ohio from 1870 to 1890. Most Poles that settled in Toledo came from that area, especially from the villages near Żnin. My grandfather (Drzewiecki) was from Wenecja and was conscripted into the Prussian Army in 1885 and served until 1888. I have his military papers that he carried with him which is written in German and stamped with the official seal of the Prussian Empire.

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

When checking on my surname Drzewiecki I found two possibilities; (1) something to do with wood, timber or the woods, (2) pertaining to a lance or lancer (Medieaval soldier). I know where my Drzewiecki ancestors lived- it was near Wenecja pow. Żninski. now in woj. Kujawsko-Pomorskie. Any theories on the name?

Right below my post on page 40, a person named enkidu uploaded an image of a coat-of-arms. Upon scanning wikipedia.com for Polish coat-of-arms, I spotted that same one. It's associated with the name 'Mogiła'. What particular post does that relate to?

I think "z deszczu pod rynne" means "rain into the gutter".

"Out of the frying pan into the fire would be "Z patelni w ogień".
