Genealogy / Does anyone have any relatives who served with 1st Polish Armoured Division (Gen. Maczek) [311]

The more I find out, the more I feel a hole in my heart for Poland. To know now that this hard working, brave and intelligent people were called aliens really hurts and so does the fact that the poles could not walk in the victory march, just to keep stalin appeased

I'm reading Rising 44 Battle for Warsaw by Norman Davies. It's shaken me, even though I was brought up on a lot of information it provides. I recommend reading it. It gives a very accurate account.

Genealogy / Does anyone have any relatives who served with 1st Polish Armoured Division (Gen. Maczek) [311]

My father-in-law served in the 1st Polish Armoured Division i know he spent time in Scotland
and fought in Holland

So did mine. Do you know whether he was in the first REgiment? If so he would have been stationed in Duns, Scotland - where a memorial was put up in memory all those who fought for the Division. For many years those who survived used to meet up in London - Either in the Polish Cultural Centre (POSK) or in Kensington around the corner from the Club "Polskie Ognisko" - Polish Hearth

SNIP
The reason Poles didn't participate in the victory parade, was because the Brits invited the Polish Government, but in the last minute they realised they hadn't been allies with that element (Lublin Committee) of Polish Government, so at the ninth hour those who had represented the Polish Government in Exile were hurriedly invited. It was felt however, that the parade for Poles would have meant a march for defeat and so no one took part.

It appears that my Gt, Gt, Grandfather was one of Napoleon Bonaparte's Generals and fought several battles against the Russians..

It can be only one of three. Do keep searching. If you need any help with the Polish just copy and paste - Just make sure you keep out family names.

Genealogy / Need some help with Bublitz family origin. [23]

why the German spelling if it was before the war?

Pomerania was autonomous in 1933 and possibly for that reason the name was Bublitz. The history of the region is very checkered. Sweden/Branderburg Prussia/Poland/German Empire/Germany and even France held sovereignity at different periods. From 1815 it came under Poland.

Genealogy / Manko, Federowicz, Baszczek, Zatwarnicka. Family history mystery. [36]

While my grandma has her's as Austria Polish. Again, does this have to do with poland not being a country and they could have lived in what today is poland, but was before (in this case) Austria?

Poland had been partitioned by Austria, Prussia and Russia and its existence wiped off the map. Poles consider those parts still to be Poland but under the rule of whichever partitioner. Some parts came under different rulers, as in the instance of SE Poland - once under Austrian rule, then Russian and now Polish. Sometimes surnames were modified to the phonetics of the given ruler making it in some cases difficult (but not impossible) to trace ancestors.

Where the ethnicity is stated as Polish, you can be sure the roots are Polish.

Ruthenians had the same issues.

Genealogy / POLISH REFUGEE CAMP - CAMBRIDGE UK - SEARCHING FOR RELATIVES [30]

Does anyone know of the names of the Polish camps in or around Cambridge set up for Polish immigrants after WW2? Searching for a relative who was based in one such camp, but without the name it's difficult to know where to look. Can any help please??

I found one in Witham but it is closer to Ely than Cambridge. Has anyone any idea where to search for the archives. I believe UNRRA were first financially responsible, the this was passed to another organization. Would the records be kept locally or would they be in a national archive.

Genealogy / POLISH REFUGEE CAMP - CAMBRIDGE UK - SEARCHING FOR RELATIVES [30]

This thread may give you some clues - good luck,

Thanks Amathyst

Try this website:-

Thanks Eagle20

I have tried both and now need to go the National Archives and start digging further. All I have is the name but no date or place of birth. Does anyone know where to find all the passenger lists for UK for Poles entering UK during and after the war? I found one website which listed a few ships between 1945-48 but not all are on it, and as my father was not listed this indicates there have to be other lists available. All I need at this stage is date of birth and perhaps place of birth or last residence. Soldiers entered during the war and there has to be a record somewhere. Any help most gratefully received.

History / Can anyone from Poland tell me about Auschwitz and The Ghetto? [582]

Can you show me the photos of those smuggling things in and out?

Are really that naive? My mother - a Catholic with no particular reason to highlight the plight of the Jews was one of the lucky ones who lived to tell the tale of the horrors of Auschwitz.

There were however many nationalities (including Germans) of many religions in camp who suffered a similar fate as the Jews and if they are to be reproached it should be for making the holocaust exclusive to them.

History / Can anyone from Poland tell me about Auschwitz and The Ghetto? [582]

There was a British soldier, still alive but over 90, who managed to smuggle him hiself in several times by bribing guards

There were also people who escaped to convey the horrors to the Western Allies who for a long time did not believe what was going on.

Genealogy / POLISH REFUGEE CAMP - CAMBRIDGE UK - SEARCHING FOR RELATIVES [30]

The nearest camp to Cambridge was at Fowlmere

Will certainly take a look though it is in Herts, whereas I've now worked out the camp site may have been in Cambridgeshire. Thank you for the suggestion and no stone will be left unturned.

Bookratt I would be most grateful if you could check out Zdzislaw Czarnecki. He was based in a camp somewhere in Cambridgeshire. The only camp I've found was in Witcham near Ely. Someone else suggested a camp called Mepal but I've found no trace of it.

Any help deeply appreciated.

Genealogy / Finding Lech family from Wisloczek/Canada [16]

Wisloczek,

Is a tiny place. In 2006 the population was 160 of which 55 were under 18.
It's about 3km walk from Rudkawka Rymanowska reached via Rzeszów or Tarnów. Some records are kept in Rudkawka Rymanowska, but most would be kept in Krosno.

Contact: e-mail: lgd@sobiesami.pl
I've tried searching for a local church where records were kept in the past for those born in Wisłoczek, and have contacted locals to establish for you where records could have been kept or transferred.

Jaszczurowa Poland

As you are aware there are two places by that name in close vicinity to each other. Having seen some other of your threads his wife was Orszulak and as there are some Orszulak's in Jaszczurowa in the District (Gmina) Mucharz in Wadowice County it might be a good place to start.

The parish church is Sw. Wojciecha:-
