Did you read the book "Niemcewicz z przodu i z tyłu" by Karol Zbyszewski? A great read really, full of facts, but written in very witty and humorous style. It portrays social relations at the end of the First Commonwealth. The book was first published in the beginning of 1939 and at once caused enormous outrage among the ruling classes of Poland who were largely of gentry origin, like Piłsudski himself.
