Life / How far apart do Poles stand when they talk? [46]

Yes softsong, people should research the culture before going for a visit or a short stay. Even your hand gestures can be offensive, if you don't know...

Pity, but a lot of western world thinks that their is the 'right" way - it is not. Travel is the best educating experience one can acquire. No book can describe what the eyes can see. The world does not end at the tip of your nose.

So, before you buy the plane ticket to Poland or Thailand..or Mumbai...do some research.
Only then then you can enjoy your stay.

Life / How far apart do Poles stand when they talk? [46]

Yes, European people tend to stay to close when they talk. It does not matter if they are from Italy or England...sorry...they are close enough to smell their breath or even 'feel" a spit on the face. Yuck. I prefer the American way, plenty of space.

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

I think the reason that Poles have grown not to ask 'jak się masz?', 'jak leci?' or 'jak tam u ciebie?' is that they don't have the half hour needed to listen to the reply ;)

lol. I think you got that right! The questions would be taken as genuine, not a small bs talk. So, don't ask unless you have some time to listen. :)

Life / Polish Nursery Rhymes [253]

Just some nursery rhymes...to sing and entertain a child.

"Kosi, kosi łapci.
pojedziemy do babci.
babcia da nam kaszki,
a dziadzio - okraszki

kosi kosi łapci
pojedziemy do babci
babcia da nam mleczka
dziadek cukiereczka

kosi kosi łapci
pojedziemy do babci
od babci do cioci
ciocia da łakoci"

USA, Canada / Are there any Polish people in Florida? [311]

What a fun job - training horses. Not really a huge market for it I suppose (especially now), but it is great to do what you love and manage it in both climates at your convenience.

summer here is really tough

I think that's the reason a lot of people go there for the winter but run away from there in the summer :). I hope to do the same some day.

USA, Canada / Are there any Polish people in Florida? [311]

My friend lives close to Sarasota, FL. in some gated community. She does not really like it there. I plan on visiting her this spring...

She thinks FL is overrated. Is it? Sure, I would take 58F now, but is the summer really miserable?

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

As far as I know przypalanka is a home made burnt sugar which is added to vodka or diluted spirytus, which makes them more palatable and adds some color (amber). I don't think this stuff is sold in stores.

Genealogy / Want to find a person [762]

Her mother also live in Mielec.

I have a friend who comes from Mielec. Her family still lives there. I will ask if she knows the name. People in small towns tend to know each other...

Life / IS CHEATING ON EXAMS OK? (younger Poles don't think so) [30]

I have to agree. Cheating played a big part in polish studies as i remember them throughout grade school and high school in Poland. It was normal. The ones with better grades were "expected" to reveal their answers or whisper one word "prompts" when asked. I often found it annoying and disrupting, but I will help. It was unthinkable, not to and if you did not, nobody would like you.

We all want to be liked in our fragile teen years, don't we? :)

Frankly, it was a shocker for me when I started my studies in the USA. Everybody was for themselves, a very unknown behavior for me, even between friends. Since I mostly relied on myself in Poland, and was the helper to others, it was no biggie. It was a joy not to be interrupted with whispers and pleading look in the eyes.

An exam is a test of your knowledge. Either you know it or you don't.
Do I want a plumber or a surgeon who cheated on their tests? I don't think so.

Life / Why there is always around a horrible smell of sweat in Poland [188]

I work with a woman (Italian heritage) who has a veil of B.O.covered with cheap perfume following her as she walks by and that's in America. Poor hygiene knows no boundaries. I cringe every time she needs my help and I have to go to her desk to help her out and lean over her shoulder to see the computer screen.

Everybody knows it, but nobody wants to gently tell her...very uncomfortable.

Language / "Poles" or "Polish people" - which is better to use? [200]

Good for you. I never paid attention to any of that either. If I detected anything with an undertone to it, I reacted. I can be snippy too.

Usually, the person would become embarrassed and apologetic. Good enough for me and a lesson for the offender.
Some get way toooooo sensitive for no reason! :)

"pieprzyc" is much milder than "f*ck it". You can say pieprzyc anytime. "F it" will raise some eyebrows immediately.

Law / Import a car from US to Poland [23]

There is a fairy tale going around that "a lot" of polish people are buying cars here and ship them to Poland to their family. With the tax of 50%, how could it possibly be worthed? I never met an actual person, who did it.

Yes, the cars are less expensive to buy here, but if you add the shipping charges and the 50% tax, it makes no sense.
I'd really like to know.

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

Southern, based on your constant praises of Slavic beauties, I tried to give polish women in Warsaw and Wroclaw a second look, whether she was a clerk in the store, a banker, a shopper or just strolling down the street... wanting to see what you see... I did notice a few lookers, but not really out of the ordinary. Of course, I'm a woman and it's different. I did see some good looking men though! :)

Life / nasza-klasa.pl - If you looking for your classmates or friends in Poland [95]

I visited the nasza-klasa website, but I did not find anybody registered from grade school (no classmates, just teachers)and only 2 people from high school. We were not friends then, so I did not registered...

I'll check in from time to time, if someone I was friends with shows up...I bet many people are doing the same. :)

I don't think burak is as strong as eejit.
Burak is a simple, village person. The word is mostly used by a "city" person.
"Burak" may not be sophisticated in the city, but he/she is are darn smart burak in the village.
(they sure know how to grow their buraki - beets, which a city person would not have a clue about)

Life / Why are Poles always so miserable? Why do they never smile? [512]

Americans have employer enforced happiness

Where the heck did that come from? What an unsubstantiated statement to make. Does it mean that nobody is happy after 5 p.m? :) lol. Americans still have plenty to smile and laugh about, no matter what anybody outside of the borders think.

A simple smile does wonders, it makes you more approachable, open, friendly and yes, prettier (forget the wrinkles). You can accomplish so much more over the phone or in person, when you take care of issues with a smile.
