News / Ups and downs of the democratic government 2023-2027 in Poland [363]

The government withdraws from social security contributions

Yes. Do you know why?? The reform would mean lower net wages for millions of Poles/Polesses, which would arouse popular anger. They can`t afford it before presidential elections.

News / Russian criticism of Poland - Soviet war memorial removal [332]

An amasing anti Soviet song which lashes at the memorials to Soviet/ Polish communists which still remained in Poland after the collapse of the system:

No lyrics coz English subs are available:

OK, only one stanza.

Ok, 2 stanzas and chorus, I can`t resist:

They say that this is a common history, no matter which way the wind blows,
But I will not stain my honour with Moscovite scumbags.

It is an obvious principle, not to give in to the communists,
Their successors of all kinds must be pushed into the abyss.

Chor

Hey! Hey! Hey, pedestals!
On them, traitors, scoundrels and morons!
Chase! Chase! Chase the hideous Bolshevik away from the monument !

UK, Ireland / What English food would you serve a Pole? [172]

No, fried. I never bake anything, coz I don`t have time and being parsimonious, I try to reduce our energy consumption. Frying is way faster and a lot cheaper and tastier as it produces a crispy texture which is my fave.
.
My wife does a o lot of baking/roasting and once in a blue moon I depend on her and smuggle my dish into the oven.

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

Two years ago I mentioned a traditional Polonaise dance performed by students and teachers at the beginning of 100 days ball in high schools all over Poland.

https://polishforums.com/study/poland-various-education-school-issues-84668/24/#msg1903051

There are other popular dances which students do at the ball. One of them is a so called Belgian Dance: music and lyrics adopted from a Belgian folk band Lais and choreography from an old French dance. The rumour is that it came to Poland from Sweden.

Students like it cos it promotes integration at the party allowing the shy ones to take active part in the fun.

It is interesting to know it took off aka became a new lay tradition in Poland about 15 years ago. That is why it is highly advisable to watch old videos coz selected students who performed it then where the ones who had done a lot of practice before. Today`s dances don`t look so professional. :):):)

History / Why didn't Britain declare war on USSR for invading Poland in 1939? [103]

tbc

The remaining stanzas of that amasing anti communist song above
It is he who forces us not to believe in God
by overwhelming us with the power of red rags,
so that the humanity in your heart would extinguish,
so that you would not know what a brother means.

After all, he stole your property
and seeps the blood of your heart from our wounds.
After all, he values the dog more than you
because you are a Pole - therefore an enemy and a Polish lord.

It is he who, preaching slogans of brotherhood,
pushes the flower of our youth to prisons.
So that humanity in your heart would fade,
so that you would not know what a brother means.

So, throw the veil from your eyes, dear brother.
Let the golden horn of the forefathers thunder again.
Beat the Bolshevik in every form,
because he is your greatest enemy today.

The story is set in early 1960s and shows a secondary school with single sex classes only for boys.

Also depicted in the film Satan from 7th Grade made in 1960.

Watch from 4:15. Professor comes to class, wants to test students and big trouble breaks out. English subs though a bit messed however intelligent people will guess the meaning.

History / Differences between Poland and Russia [78]

a russian will fight until the final

Russians fight till the end to save their family from oppression back home by the brutal authorities led by a crazy dictator. Today Putin, in the past Stalin or Ivan the Terrible. Those Russians are really miserable.

A joke from Cold War times:
US and Soviet military organise a meeting. Officers decide to test their soldiers` discipline and loyalty.
An American soldier is told by his superiors to leap off the cliff into certain death below in the name of Ronald Reagan. He refuses: I can`t. I have a wife and kids.
A Russian is told the same by Soviet officers to die in the name of Leonind Brezhnev. He quickly climbs the cliff and is going to jump when Ams stop him and ask. Are you crazy?? Go down and back to the camp!
He replies: I can`t. I have a wife and kids.

Life / Poles turn their backs on organised religion. [148]

It is sad how some priests abuse the teachings of Jesus, thus further putting decent people off the RC Church.

During a meeting of Ciechanów residents with Karol Nawrocki, the parish priest of one of the local parishes spoke up and supported the PiS candidate. - As for Professor Dudek, I advise you to give him a right jab or a left jab when you meet him - advised Father Jan Jóźwiak in his speech and blessed Nawrocki. Professor Antoni Dudek recently assessed that Nawrocki is "one of the most dangerous people" in the public space. - God bless you, Reverend Dean. Thank you for these words and for your support - the PiS candidate replied to the priest.

History / Why didn't Britain declare war on USSR for invading Poland in 1939? [103]

Thank you, dear Staff!!! You are so quick. My jaw always drops low down when I see your immediate reaction. :):):)

An anti Soviet song composed by patriotic Poles/Polesses during WW2. It mentions Katyn Massacre.

Fight the Bolshevik!!!

Fight the Bolshevik in every form,
because he is your greatest enemy today.
After all, he paved the network of his countless roads with the bones of your brothers.

It was he who drove your children to Siberia,
and composed a joyful song from their groans.
It is he who today oppresses our fathers,
and makes them bear the yoke of communism.

It was he who, in the dark forest of Katyn,
suddenly plunged a sharp knife into the Polish chest,
murdering there the best Polish sons
like a vile thug, a vile traitor, a coward.

It is he who worships Stalin like a deity,
not sparing your priests severe torments.
It is he who turned churches into cinemas
and tramples on the cross, worshiping the red star.

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

Done at 18 usually,

Yes, coz British kids start education 1 year earlier than Polish ones. They aka Polish kids thank rightist PiS for that. :):):)

Sometimes it can be overkill. Better understanding deeply rather than memorising.

Exactly. That is required at the exams here. I have a Polish class exam before my eyes coz I am working on it with my youngest kid. Soon I will post some excerpts in another thread.

Bimbarding them with information.

Exactly. However, that`s the way it has to go. It is a high school exam students take at 19 years old which is comparable to Advanced exams in British system. Students who do well can enroll at elite universities to study popular courses like Law or Psychology.

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation - part 2 [714]

(and the ads in them)

I used to buy Reader`s Digest and Newsweek magazines in antykwariat antique bookshops at the time. I still keep them on the shelf today, with my notes and highlighted words and phrases worth memorising.
They were quite up to date, just a few weeks older than the content. I suppose American embassy workers sold them to that antique bookshop.
