News / There is no Poland without the Church! [178]

never met a Pole who does.

Now now Polonius - behave. The amount of bureaucracy in Poland has nothing to do with communism. That dies 27 years ago. The Polish authorities absolutely love their power of unnecessary auditing and aren't going to give it up.

It's alright for you to deny the fact that paperwork here is an absolute scandal, living there in the US of A.

Sorry - that was aimed at Polsyr....

You can still have your car impounded if you're not carrying the car docs with you for instance - whereas in fact - and I have tested this - on a simple call to the kommisariat by the traffic cops, within seconds they have your address, your driving record, your job, your status, proof of your name and all details that go with it, criminal record, political leanings, your addresses over the last 20 years, financial details, tax details and the like, obviously your on-line behaviour, and personal **** ( they delighted in spilling some of the beans to my daughter, who was with me..so if you wish to avoid such a scenario that might be just one reason to carry your docs :((

In other words - there is no purpose to be served in carrying your docs - but your governments' power trip. And general paperwork as Polonius says is NOT decreasing anything like fast enough.

As the American guest famously said to Basil Fawlty in the legendary "Fawlty Towers", and I misquote "If you don't get a Waldorf Salad right now, I'm going to bust your ass".

I agree with the American guest. Some asses are long overdue for busting here - and they are big fat Polish ones.

Law / Weed laws in Poland [25]

places where drugs are legal

Weed is not "legal" in the vast majority of enlightened countries InPolska, but "tolerated"- a little like pornography. What one chooses to indulge in to the non-detriment of others.... and all that jazz.

My hound has an (imagined) dog-eared copy of "Miss labrador" and enjoys the whiff of a good herbal evening. But don't tell those do-gooders!

Poland is the Britain of the 1950s. Everything is available, and permitted - for the elite.

As to your "many young people", do consider all those who have voted for Kukiz and those who regularly vote for Korwin-Mikke and consorts = quite a bunch! ;).

Hello InPolska

We can only hope that their peers will have a word and those nippers will see the light and remember that a vote for anybody but PO is a vote against the rights of young people.

Laughable. I am the poorest man on my street, and according to that "table" I am in the top half million wage earners :) ROFL

News / There is no Poland without the Church! [178]

do you believe PF posters reflect a representative cross-section of Polish public opinion?

Yes I do. Many young Poles don't believe in the value of church nowadays. Many young people are LBGT positive, many Poles don't think of different peoples as endangering their way of life - and want to pay-back for the many years of Polish migration...

...and so on - all views expressed by some on this board.

Polish public opinion.

Well, if you were (mistakenly) alluding that Polish public opinion largely mirrors your own Polonius, then it would desperately need to be dragged screaming into the 21st century :)

However educated and younger Poles who live here are moving with the times, thanks be to God! ( I spoke to him just the other day, and He is very relieved with the way that things are going here generally)

History / Lech Walesa - Happy Birthday! [54]

for all his faults he's a great man who changed history

Yes - Poles are clueless. They bad mouth Walesa at garden grill parties but they allowed the communist general to live out his natural, and bought his book and made him a rich man.

The Polish nation is very badly ignorant as to the real facts.

Law / HELP: ALLEGRO... Do most Polish buyers at allegro.pl use PayPal? [33]

Thanks for any advice on this matter

The ONLY way to do any business on Allegro is to send by courier and COD - meaning that I, the buyer, will only pay for the goods when I have them in my hand.

I will never again pay for goods electronically in advance. Way too often on Allegro people are scammed. It reflects badly on the huge majority like yourself who are bone fide and on the level.

News / Russian criticism of Poland - Soviet war memorial removal [332]

here are tons of Communist graveyeards around where I live, they are respected and are kept in good condition

Mmm - those are of course sacrosant Smurf - but I don't agree I'm afraid about protecting those ludicrous Soviet "memorials" all over Silesia and Zaglebia. Firmly in the right-wing camp on this one - those edifices with mock tanks and the rest are not memorials but (failed) triumphalism.

Travel / Poland or Philippines? Which is better for a vacation? (sex tourism) [39]

I heard that the place foreign tourists go in Warsaw is the Hotel Victoria

Yep, nothing's changed then. Stayed in that place during communism. The attraction in the desert that was Warsaw, was that the Victoria Continental had Czech beer:) Wondered what all the Arab gentlemen were doing hanging around!

notesfrommiddleearth.wordpress.com

Strange guy. Does he think he's the voice of every long-stay on these shores? Why doesn't he get a job? And anyway, we all know internet dating is for losers, so nothing new there. The OP might as well stay in the USA if dating sites are all he can manage, if he can't actually chat to a woman.

Travel / Poland or Philippines? Which is better for a vacation? (sex tourism) [39]

There's a country in Asia called Thailand. I hear that it's very good for such as you desire. Here to help. Polish women will kick you where it hurts, and the sex clubs will likely take that 4 grand off you in one night.

Or so I am led to believe by the conservative press.

News / Poland is being robbed - Kukiz [37]

He's actually come up with some sort of a 'manifesto':

That's not a manifesto. That's the ramblings of a previously unheard of "rock" singer, who doesn't know diddly-squat about basic economics.

So it's a two horse race then. Good. A straight choice between market forces and centralised interference in the economy.

Let's have it!

News / British schoolboys very sensibly dealt with by the Poland's authorities after theft in Auschwitz [45]

Take Austria

Mmmm. Less said.............. I wonder if they respect the concentration camps and other holocaust sites in the same way as Poland does.

The British press though, as usual, forget to mention the enormous numbers of Polish catholics who were murdered in Auschwitz, my wife's grandfather being just one.

These public schoolboys probably didn't engage brain. That horrible place does strange things to your mind.

Life / Vandalism in Poland: Has it always been this way? [80]

You don't see graffiti being done as most of it is a 5 second **** on the wall.

I caught a yoof spraying graffiti on a block wall in Katowice Tysiaclecia. I boxed his ears and had him crying out in vain for his dad. These clowns are scum.

Hats off to the Polish authorities, for dealing with this misdeameanour toute de suite, even though there was no real reason for the schoolboys arrested for picking up historical fragments from the grounds at Auschwitz to be imprisoned overnight.

I assume they will be getting six of the best from the headmaster?

News / New European Council's report: "Poland oasis of racism, xenophobia and homophobia" ... [343]

Que? I don't follow your line of argument.

Let quotas of refugees settle, study and work, and they will become consumers. What is difficult to understand in that?

In the meantime, The Guardian newspaper reports that the European Commission is to table a deal with Poland where it drops opposition to re-settlement of 60,000 refugees EU wide, in return for support v Russia.

All who have studied political history know how ungrateful Polish diplomats through the ages have been for any past aid, so I for one wont be holding my breath that the Polish establishment has one breath of humanity in its' body and will do the right thing.

News / New European Council's report: "Poland oasis of racism, xenophobia and homophobia" ... [343]

So do tell us Wulkan what your reaction would be if the UK populace had the same ignorant and xenophobic attitude as you do, but about Poles?

Do you think you are somehow "better" because of the colour of your skin?

Before you bang on about muslims and how they offend you; quite a few Silesian pious catholics offend me too, geneflucting in the church on a Sunday while being too vodka addled and lazy to provide properly for their families - something you will never see in muslim communities in the UK.

News / New European Council's report: "Poland oasis of racism, xenophobia and homophobia" ... [343]

i am a decent law abiding citizen.

And refugees are de facto not law abiding? Admitedly they are not citizens, but what would you do with them? Shoot them like your police shoot street urchins? Or have you washed your hands of Brazil?

It is always immigrants who have a holier than thou attitude, along with a feeling of entitlement, and **** everybody else who is less fortunate than themselves.

Disgusting.

And mods, this is on topic, because I think that Poland should be doing more to accept its' full quota of these refugees.

Polish people, in general, are not bigots; they prefer to live and let live

Not here in Gdynia :( People are always telling you "You can't do that.............." without the proper forms of address as well :(

I always end up telling them to **** off and mind their own business.

Also most of my students remark about all the black faces in the shops and the bars. Fact. Never heard any homophobic nonsense here though.

News / Kukiz and Petru - newly emerging political stage in Poland [57]

PiS is mainly those who wish to poison the minds of children with every manner of decadent propaganda

Changed it for you. PIS are out of date and clueless about European society as a whole. Poland is in Europe, right? Did Poland or did she not accept the billions in grants, that state that she is now part of theEU and has to grant equal rights to all her citizens and those residing here?

I am sure you will agree Poland is in fact in Europe.
Vis a vis she has to be dragged screaming into the 21st century. But PIS would put her back in the time of Henry the Eighth.

Good post gregy. You are talking sense here, if I may so say, and I know I too don't always do that either :) This singer bloke is simply another Tyminski, a total non-entity. Send him to Peru.

News / Kukiz and Petru - newly emerging political stage in Poland [57]

Poland being called "comformist" is considered offensive

Right. But that connotation is consigned by academics to the waste bin of history.
British politicians always branded Poles as "belligerent." Look in the Oxford concise dictionary if you have to see which of the two terms is the more positive.

There is absolutely no reason for copy another country

There is every reason to "copy" another country. I know you wont understand this analogy because your education system doesn't encourage the student at school to learn by kinesthetic means. But.........

In the UK, if you are in an organic practical chemistry class, and are unsure what to do, and you are carrying out an experiment, but have 9 or 10 pieces of apparatus - what do you do?

You look to see what all the other students are doing, that's what, and you set up your apparatus as they are doing. It's called conforming to society. Something that Poles are generally still absolutely clueless about. It's exactly the same as in that TV quiz, where the contestant doesn't know the answer and asks the audience, and 98% of them answer "B".

You would have to be a moron to go against them.

In exactly the same way, Poland should be copying a lot of the laws and acceptable social conditions of other countries. For they make a whole lot of sense. In the meantime, we have a socially reprehensible president who promises more of the same old hate nonsense.

Classifieds / Wedding reception in Katowice, Poland [14]

Smurf will be along soon to advise. In the meantime, don't do it :)

Affordable hotel food in Kato sucks BIG time.

Seriously though, the best value is still to rent out a hall and get some caterers (older ladies who know how to cook proper Polish nosh, 8 courses, and do it yourself.

400 bottles of vodka for around 70 guests, over 2 days, and a third day for farewells, should seal the deal :)
Why not rent out a Straz Pozarna in a village location?

Work / What is a good monthly salary for an English teacher in Poland? [124]

By the way DominicB, you touched a nerve when you said "get off your lazy duff.

CMC - DB is only trying to help, and having forbid that you stop posting Dom, but he (Dominik) is technically minded. He expects everyone to have the same aptitude, which is ridiculous.

I am a fan of his, but he is a one of those who can do - according to GBS - and the rest of us have to teach. And you, CMC, already know that one can still make a good living from teaching so don't listen to Dominics' patronising posts per se. I promise you I make as much money today in real terms as I did ten years ago - not more, 'tis true - so Dom is right there; things change - but if I don't like a certain scene, I decline, or in particular situations, I milk it. That for me is success. My freedom, my quality of life. Of course others need a greater challenge and may be more materialistic as well.

If you come to the Tri-city I would be happy to give you a few pointers and to learn new strategies from you at the same time. Better still, listen to experienced professionals like Jon and Harry, and the champion from Poznan, wherever he is lurking.

Time to bring back the last named back Mods. This forum needs him.

By real literature, I mean actual real books

Mmm - and what happened to authentic texts? Contemporary work of course. But functional language is to be found everywhere. I have some of my learners watching UK TV via FilmOn - if they enjoy Polish soaps, why not watch Eastenders?

What if the learner doesn't read literature in their own language? And what is literature anyway? Bukowski? Agatha Christie?

Horses........

Sorry - I don't get why newspapers don't "count" - they are wonderful sources of language with purpose. Ask Tim Grundy.

Work / What is a good monthly salary for an English teacher in Poland? [124]

How English Works, by Michael Swan

Good lad. My learners often think I am Michael Swan because I am always referencing Practical English Usage - he is the man :) And when he guest lectured at the university of Silesia back in the 90s I was in the pub instead on a three dayer :((

To get to the point of the OP's question - the answer is 8000 zl after tax for an experienced hard-working bod - but I am too busy walking the labrador to obtain that.

So 8000 before stoppages of a kind is the go. Plus nice little earners Del-Boy style.
