Genealogy / Auberzinski family name [18]

Live in USA now and the family name is now "Auberzinski"

What was your Grandfather's first name ? And where do you think he was born ?

If you have enough information you can check him in Ship's Records.

Are all the other Auberzinski's related to you ? There are quite a few.

The name has nothing to do with aubergines. It is a misspelling of a Russian, Polish, Lithuanian etc name. Possibly Jewish.

Travel / Best place to exchange money in Poland? [98]

the differences between the shops can be 100's of %.

pound - zloty (as an example)

If the official rate is given as 4.90

Kantors will offer about 4. 80

you might find one that offers about 4.82 which would be considered good.

Law / What are the bike laws in Poland? [30]

don't ride across a zebra crossing on a bike... get off and walk.

well that's the law, but i've only been stopped twice for breaking it. and didn't get a fine.

if the police/city police want to be awkward they can check things like lights and bell etc.

History / Happy Constitution day! 3 May 1791 (Poland Constitution) [18]

The confederation of Bar happened today in 1791. Short lived and bittersweet, it was none the less a huge leap for European democracy.

A good number of Wroclaw youth and myself marked the occasion in usual style by attending a gig on the Wyspa Slodowa. All to the tunes of KNZ, Coma, Myslovitz etc.

Food / Poles prefer pizza & kebab? [73]

Nothing beats a good seafood pizza

I don't see too many places selling seafood pizza... other than tinned tuna that is.

I like kebabs from one shop better than others.

The ammount of sauce and vegitation they put in it make all the difference.

They also come in different sizes... depending on the shop/kiosk

Food / Poles prefer pizza & kebab? [73]

In Poland I allways grab a zapiekanka, but hard to find one that is like they used to be 20 years ago

most of the kiosks that sold them have now gone, but you can still get them at mainline railway stations.

News / RUSSIA TO MAKE PUBLIC THE KATYN FILES... [274]

Need I remind anyone of the Kursk? If Russia can stand by and do nothing for their own, while a British ship was stationed and ready to assist,

Maybe they learnt from that episode.

BTW I think something similar happened after the Kursk and they did accept help. I could be wrong though.

UK, Ireland / Polish immigrants in the UK - victims or criminals?! [243]

I think that all immigrants in all countries will sooner or later feel uncomfortable with the treatment they receive in their new home.

no problems here and that's after twenty years. once you learn to negotiate the problems of september 39 and why the brits don't always have mixer taps you're pretty much intergrated.

Food / Does beer have any "real" expire date? [39]

My question is, are they still drinkable?

One thing that will destroy beer is light... hence the dark bottle.

Another is heat.

The only way to find out is to drink some.

Life / Bilingual kids in Polish schools [30]

Reading up on possible causes and treatments but interested if anyone else going through similar issues.

I can only guess the problems.

Are the other kids making fun off your child when he/she speaks English at school ?

Does your child sometimes use English and the teacher doesn't understand ?

If you don't keep an eye on this it's possible that your child will refuse to learn English.

The statement that kids soak up other languages, you will find, is often rubbish. They won't learn anything when they are embarrassed by their peers for saying something different.

At such a young age, when living in Poland, make sure that Polish is the priority language. And remember that Polish learners of English don't learn the simple forms. So when you say this is a 'moo-cow' instead of 'cow' you are certain to land your kid in trouble.

But the real answer is to talk to the teacher/s

Genealogy / William Alexander, 1850, Krunicza, Prussia, Poland [11]

he was born in Krunicza, Prussia, Poland

possibly this place, Krynica: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krynica

have you checked the Ship's Record.

as well as checking the passenger it's always worth checking next of kin and the place name/address given for them.

edit. just realized that if he changed his name in the states you won't find him in Ship's Records

you'll have to check all the records for the particular ship and then match place of birth/origin
with date of birth.

check the name of the ship and date of departure. Elba or Elbe ?

the Elbe which sailed out of Bremen wasn't built until 1881

Likewise, a number of items posted before then still haven't arrived.

for our amusement please let us know when/if they ever arrive.

there are a few threads explaining why you should not use poczta polska.
