Life / Litter in Poland [24]

Using some before people would be more reasonable and fairer.

swiatrolnika.info/smieci-polskie-lasy

notice the headline.... no 'some' there....

When was the last time you visited Italy??? :):)

2018, surprisingly little litter (kind of an upscale area but...)

But I see it rarely

take a walk in a forest lately?

garbage

Life / Litter in Poland [24]

I complained in another thread on the littering culture of Poland (hardly unique to the country but I'm in a bad mood about it).

What needs to change to stop people from just dropping their garbage wherever they happen to be? Especially in places like parks and wooded areas and around lakes/ponds?

If you Polish does the litter bother you or not? What can you do about it?

If your not, then how does litter in Poland compare to your country?

If litter isn't a big problem where you are what happened to get it under control?

Language / Short Polish<->English translations [1050]

The sense of this piece in bold is unclear to me

To me as well.... I imagine... that the godfather of a child about to be baptized scrapes some paint from a painting (icon?) he likes and mixes it with baptismal water... but beyond that....

It reads like a bad translation, do you have any idea what the original language was (or what the language of the author is)?

Life / Fast Food missing in Poland [48]

taco bell virtually doesnt exist in Poland?

It was in Poland (at least in Warsaw) in the mid 1990s for a few years but then disappeared.... the locations I was in were doing good business so I think pulling was not just economic.

I really miss fresh corn tortillas....

Law / Is bus fine going to effect my visa or passport? [5]

Are there such people like that in Poland?

If everybody else was treating them normally they should be legit... (Polish passengers don't stay silent if they thing something's going on).

And getting busted for riding 'na gapę' (without a ticket) won't affect anything in any way....

Language / Polish terms for age demographic? ("Baby Boomer", "Generations X/Y/Z", "Millennials", "Post-Millennials",etc?) [12]

for persons born before or during Polish communism

In general.... everybody seems devoted to trying to forget all about that period, my students say it's barely mentioned in high school history. This is because there's an ideological conflict about who did what when and how and why and until there's a clear winner... it's just not discussed much.

I think that the western labels are used in Poland (though the generational timeline doesn't match up and the qualities are very different)

But the thing is, I think most academic sources about this will be in Polish (with at most summaries translated into English)

here's an example.... though the summary isn't that... illuminating...

WHY ARE WE WHO WE ARE? IDENTIFICATION OF GENERATIONAL FACTORS OF GENERATION Y AND GENERATION Z IN POLAND
SUMMARY
The aim of the article was identify generational factors of generation Y and generation Z in Poland. The analysis were based on a review of literature focusing on the youngest Polish generations. The cultural orientation of defining generations was used. The elements of the historical situation that influenced the shaping of the analyzed age groups were identified. The historical situation that shapes generations is specific to each country. In the era of globalization, we point out the unification of generational factors. However, the impact of cultural conditions is still important

Language / Polish terms for age demographic? ("Baby Boomer", "Generations X/Y/Z", "Millennials", "Post-Millennials",etc?) [12]

In the "Polish historical sense" are Polish timelines (including Polish informal/slang terms) for age demographics same/similar as USA & Canada etc?

Why would they be? Generations are defined by shared experiences and there aren't really globally shared experiences of the type that create generations*.

Baby boomers were the product of post World War II abundance and the American High (sociological term) and/or the Great Compression.

Poland's experience after WWII wasn't remotely similar... a long hard climb out of too many people killed, destroyed infrastructure and hobbled by Soviet "help"...

Generation X became the first victims of the boomers' entitled mentality, without boomers you don't get generation X and without generation X you don't get millenials...

On the other hand there's a tradition in Poland of adopting names from foreign events without understanding the underlying meaning.

There are generational differences in Poland but... they don't coincide with the NAmerican terms and I don't know of any work (I haven't looked) that has examined them.

*dysfunctional and harmful covid responses might create one... and people better watch out cause they are gonna hate older generations and they'll be absolutely right

Law / Polish Police and Their Tactics [237]

The shooting in the legs was was a proposal

A terrible proposal... that takes much better aim than most police have (especially in situations of extreme stress). It's not for nothing that cops are trained to shoot for the largest area of mass (roughly the human trunk).

And.... by the time the cops start shooting at you they want you dead.

Polonia / Let's talk about Sweden and other Scandinavian countries [236]

Thus is seems that the people of Sweden agree with the current situation.

I've actually yet to meet a Scandinavian who agrees with large scale immigration from the Middle East/Africa.... and once you get them started..... the problem is the major parties agree that the policy must continue and so what the voters want doesn't matter

Denmark has tried to bring official policy in line with majority preference and gets lots of international disrespect, Sweden prioritizes public relations over citizen well-being and Norway is somewhere in the middle (I remember a Norwegian woman who was _very_ worried for her adult daughter's safety. She lived in Oslo which was becoming a lot less safe due to crimes committed by non-assimilating non-western migrants.

History / Polish attitudes towards ex-Soviet republics joining NATO [116]

As an Am, you don`t know everything about relations between Slavic nations.

The Russian state (which is what I mean by "Russia") is not really a "Slavic nation"... it's an aggressively expansionist empire and there are extremely few examples of it ever being a good neighbor or reliable ally and lots of examples of it acting in an awful way.

The Russian (ethnic Russian) people are a different question. Most of them are mostly fine people (just apathetic politically).

Integrating (how?) with "Europe" will never deter Russian aggression against Poland - only the prospect of massive resistance (which only NATO can deliver) will.

History / Polish attitudes towards ex-Soviet republics joining NATO [116]

only possible option for Poland to deter Russian invasion is to integrate further with the European West

Which is crap militarily (except maybe the UK).... so that leaves NATO or subjugation to Russia (Russia doesn't do partnership or allies - it's held at bay or dominates).

Life / Is Polish church involved in politics too much? [137]

Terrible story from around Ełk. The Parish Priest had trees cut down (and pulled up by the roots) in a pre WWII Protestant cemetery destroying graves (and leaving bones on the surface of the ground.

He didn't have permission to cut down the trees (much less desecrate graves) and according to a commenter it's illegal at this time of year to cut down trees because it's nesting season for birds.

The priest needs to go to jail for this.

Polonia / Let's talk about Sweden and other Scandinavian countries [236]

a la, as in "a la mode"

The problem with Sweden is that policy is not driven by reality but by idealism and ideology (a quick way to end up in a bad place).

It's driven, among other things, by ideas that are patently false to anyone paying attention (there are no significant collective differences between groups of people) and since questioning the ideology is forbidden making their policy less dysfunctional can't happen even when a majority is against it.

Nuts.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

Even in the USSR nobody was forcing women to get pregnant or would punish them for it.

There was no other birth control in the USSR so the only alternative to abortion for married women who coudln't afford more children was abstinence.... (not going to make husbands happy either).

The USSR humiliated citizens in lots of ways, for years there was a single bra size for all women

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

I didn't know that "fascists" have anything to do with reproductive rights

Authoritarian regimes whether left or right tend to take an interest in controlling reproduction and manipulating birth rates....

Usually it takes the form of blanket bans on abortion (Franquist Spain) because the state wants to increase the population. It often leads to awful unintended consequences (see communist Romania and abandoned children/orphans). Also see efforts in Iran and Turkey to raise collapsed birth rates.

Sometimes the goal is to limit population China's one child policy or just to act as a ritual humiliation of women (your beloved Soviet Union was a giant abortion mill and many women had multiple abortions).

Polonia / Let's talk about Sweden and other Scandinavian countries [236]

This is therefore nothing new:-)

That is a horrifyingly cavalier attitude toward primitive behavior that healthy societies have gotten rid of long ago. I guess if multicultural goodness is at stake then who cares about the suffering of girls?

Spanking children is nothing new but it's illegal in Sweden now - but 40 year-olds can marry 10 year old girls? disgusting.

Sweden says YES to Child Marriage

friatider.se/regeringen-sager-ja-till-barnaktenskap-vid-synnerliga-skal

"The government says yes to approving child marriage if there are "special reasons". This is stated in a bill that is expected to enter into force on 1 July this year. At the same time, the explicit 18-year requirement in the legal text is abolished.

Hillevi Larsson (S): "Lie" that we are not against child marriage

urlopiku - the same as urlopu

And the example I found "miałam urlopika"?

and I also found

Maybe it's unstable (like krawat).

- what about sklepiku

what about samochodzik?

"Zapnij pasy swego samochodzika!"

urlopika (I think just about every diminutive ending in -ik will have a genitive in -a....) and in this case urlopik seems (maybe) to become animate...

I found "wczoraj mialam urlopika" on google.....

News / Poland calls on British expertise to analyse the Smolensk accident [49]

This makes the pilot criminally, professionally, and morally responsible.

Kaczyński had a reputation for bullying pilots to land even when the pilots thought it unsafe.... so he bears part of the blame himself.

My opinion of the Russian state (as opposed to individual Russians) could not be lower but... no credible evidence this was anything but a tragic accident (though maybe JKaczyński and ADuda should be in jail for crimes against the Polish state).

the rest of us understand and know Russians better......

I totally agree that Russia _could_ do something like that and might if it thought it was necessary, but.... there's no credible evidence that that was the case.

Pilot (and entire Polish government?) error.... Jarosław from thinking up the idea to Duda to packing so many necessary people on one plane.... they should be in jail.

The innocence of Tusk and Komorowski is just kind of.... glowing.

Jarek and Duda.... are guilty and have spent how much trying to cover up their hubris and negligence?
