USA, Canada / To move back to Poland from the USA or not to move back....that is the question [119]

Ideas?

I think you should go for it. At least give it a try for a couple of years. But do it before you guys have kids, so when they come they will have a stable environment for growing up, either in PL or US.

Me personally, I would never do it, mainly because my wife and kids don't speak any Polish.
Plus I wouldn't want to leave my friends and family behind.

Also I know I could never provide for my family the standard of living we have here. I think I would have to be a millionaire to have a house like this in Poland, and we are just a middle class here.

IMO the fact that so many Poles have to travel to GB for work just to make the ends meet is telling. I don't want to have to do that, I'm to old for that :)

Anyways good luck to you guys and please let us know how it's going, maybe start writing a blog or something? That would be interesting.

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

3 reasons why you hate Poland.

I don't hate Poland, but I think Polish People have a way to go to catch up with the western culture:

1. They don't shower enough. Sometimes they shower like 1-2 times a week. That's NOT enough. 1-2 times a day is good, anything less it's smelly. Maybe you can't smell it, but trust me, I can.

2. Look in my eyes when you talk to me! Eye contact is important.

3. Don't trash people behind their back! This seams to be a polish
national sport.

Language / Polish words difficult to translate into English [66]

Another difficult one to translate: "coorvah".

As in: "Coorvah, I woke up, coorvah, took a shower, coorvah, had a cup of coffee, coorvah, drove to work, coorvah, then came back, coorvah, had some dinner, coorvah, watched a game, coorvah, an went to bed, coorvah."

I think the best way to translate "coorvah" is: "comma".

Life / Why are so many Polish People rude on the internet? [96]

OK, here is an example: search "Polish Cuisine" on YouTube and you get this as the first video, read those comments:

Then you search for "Italian Cuisine", first video, read those comments:

See the difference?

I personally think this is a baggage leftover from the Communist era, when people had to push and fight one another just to get daily groceries

Life / Why are so many Polish People rude on the internet? [96]

Why are so many Polish People rude on the Internet? I'm just wandering. Not just here, but all over the net. It maybe just me, but anywhere you go on the WWW, you can find some Polish person making incredibly rude comments, or at the very least complaining endlessly about something.

For instance: go on youtube and do a search for "Polish Cuisine". What you find is many extremely rude comments made by Poles. Now do the same with "Italian Cuisine", and the comments under the videos are totally different, most are friendly and courteous. Why is that?

Food / Lost family recipe for Chow-Chow (Polish style) [37]

Pistachio77

I finally finished website with my favorite polish recipes- bestpolishrecipes.com !
Check this out if you like to cook. I also welcome readers' comments, both good and bad, as I continue to experiment with new recipes and new variants of old ones.

Nice job with the website. Your Hunters Stew recipe:

One 33 ounce jar of Sauerkraut
One Savoy Cabbage
Two pounds beef
Two pounds pork
One pound of “breakfast” sausage links
½ pound smoked bacon
One pound Kielbasa
One onion
One SMALL can of Tomato paste or sauce
3 to 5 Bay Leaves
salt, pepper, oil, sugar, allspice

I don't know about all that beef and pork in there. Also, I never saw a recipe for a Hunters Stew with a breakfast sausage in it.

I do use mushrooms in mine, though. It's supposed to be a "hunters" stew, and they would put wild mushrooms in it, found in a forest.

News / Do Poles in Poland really feel betrayed because there won't be any US Shield? [288]

Many Poles hated US because we offered them a free missile shield. They said it was an insolt to them, what they demanded was a free shield plus lots of cash. So US changed their mind. Well now the same Poles feel insolted because US won't give them a free missile shield. Too bad. I'm just happy I wont have to pay for it with my tax dollars.

Life / IS CHEATING ON EXAMS OK? (younger Poles don't think so) [30]

Cheating in exams, mate

You could cheat on your exam too. Lets say that you've been with your exam for a long time now, and the physical attraction has faded away throughout the years. Furthermore, the excitement is gone, the chemistry is long gone, you shifted apart without even noticing, and you hardly even talk to one another anymore.

Suddenly, you meet a new exam. A much younger exam and a very, very attractive one. At first, you try hard not to think of doing something nottie with the new exam. But then the new exam tells you that she finds you very attractive also. Suddenly, one rainy afternoon after a two-martini lunch, you find yourself in a cheap motel room with the new exam, doing.... Well, anyways, this is how you cheat on an exam.

Life / Womans day in Poland? [242]

Do young people celebrate March 8th, or is it remembered by the older generation only? I thought that was an old Communist celebration remembered only by the old folks?

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

I have to taste potato vodka and grain vodka side-by-side one day, and see the difference for myself. It would be an interesting experiment.
And yeah, EbonyandBathory is right; it’s difficult to find Polish Vodka in the U.S. All you can get here is Absolute (Sweden), Grey Goose (France), Stoli (Russia).

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

I would also say Belvedere or Chopin.
I think that Zubrowka sucks ass, but it is possible that I drank the "fake" Zubrowka, since the real one is outlawed in the USA because of the poisonous Bison Grass.

The best Vodka is Luksusowa Potato Vodka!

Aren't all top shelf vodkas made strictly out of wheat nowadays?
I did try Luxusowa, it was good but it had an aftertaste.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

To many people are getting hanged up on the semantics. It is what it is, no matter what you would like it to be. And it is an Eastern European Country. Now I understand the reason why you want to call it something else, there is a bad wrap attached to the name "Eastern European" (unfortunately) but it is up to us to make it something better and make POLAND it's own name brand and to make sure that people think about positive things when they hear the word 'POLAND'.

It is far more important how YOU carry yourself, how educated and successful are YOU in your life and carrier, what kind of job or business do YOU have now, are YOU a blue collar or white collar worker, do people look at YOU with respect. This is the way you build a good reputation for Poland and not by arguing endlessly about "is it East or Central". You need to start from yourself.

Life / Poles - the Nation of Liars? [478]

we only tell half-truths. Or at least thats what my family says.

And you believe'em??? I bet you they're lying half the time. This would mean that Poles lie about 1/4 of times.
Oh, wait - I'm a Pole too, so I've just told a half truth, which means that Poles lie about 1/8 of times!

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

I propose that Poland should be within Southern Northern Western Eastern Europe (Central).

I second that motion.
Or we could call it Western Asia or Nothern Africa.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Why is there so much fuss about it?
Poland is an Eastern European Country as far as the political and historical background goes. There is NOBODY in the world, I assure you who will hear the word "Poland" and will say to him/her-self: "Oh yeah, Poland is in CENTRAL Europe". No! They'll think of a former Soviet Satellite, Warsaw Pact, etc; EASTERN EUROPE.

That's the way it is and no matter how much some of you want to deny it, it's better to get used to it and work with it.

Trust me, I understand the reasoning behind your thinking and I simpathise, but it is what it is - Eastern Europe.

Life / Doughnut [Pączki] Day... in Poland [70]

OK I got it. It looks like the Paczki Day is celebrated on Fat Tuesday or Fat Thursday (two different things) depending on the location: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paczki

In Chicago, Detroit, Hamtramck, Milwaukee, and South Bend Paczki Day is more commonly celebrated on Fat Tuesday instead of Fat Thursday.

That is interesting. I never knew that.

It's a dough nut (pączki) day tomorrow.

No, the paczki day was a month ago, not today! I remember the chef at work always makes some paczkis for everybody (or maybe they just buy'em?) :)

I wouldn't say that generally poles are racist, but it does disturb me sometimes walking round the streets in the towns and cities seeing this sign.

Is that really true???

Life / Poles are not racist [873]

Negros are racist.

Here is the answer to your question in a nut shell. Thank you Gregorz and the others for making the things clear to us :) Just in case, if anyone thought that Polish are not racist...

BTW, I think that gregorz is an different kind of racist. He is an educated young man and not your typical toothless white trash redneck, such us you could find them in Canada or US. That in my opinion makes the Polish racist way more sinister and dangerous then in the rest of the world.

Love / Polish Women Versus Your Local Women ? [289]

i somewhat agree with above.
Americanized Polish women are gold diggers

That's not what I had in mind. I was thinking of the boater women, fresh from the Old Country. These are the gold diggers here.

Americanized Polish women are more like the local girls - more independent, more confident about themselves, they learn how to enjoy themselves and how to be happy with what they really are; as oppose to showing off the material things to their friends in the “I got more then you do" competition.

Love / Polish Women Versus Your Local Women ? [289]

Polish women are very goal-minded. They are also deceitful and insidious. Family (husband) means nothing to them, other goals like material things and monetary rewards are way more important in their life. The reason why they are not so good in bed is that they don't really know how to truly enjoy themselves. In their minds, "being happy" is having more things, better house, newer car and clothes than their friends. There is this never-ending, fierce competition for more money between the Polish People. They are extremely competitive in this field. Other than that, they're never happy.

Life / Poles are not racist [873]

Most of Poles ARE racist, there is no doubt. The funny part is that they truly don't understand it; they honestly don't believe you when you point it out to them. Just today I've seen a post here titled "Jews are a problem" or something like that. Do you think that any other Poles objected to that? No. They think it's OK, just "debating", that's all.

And yeah, it is especially idiotic because we Poles are Slavs, an "inferior race" according to the Nazi philosophy.

Food / Healthy polish food? [134]

I'm a vegetarian, and family dinner nights are tough

Hey you guys look what I've found:

Vegan Polish Dishes - Recipe

STRAWBERRY OR BLUEBERRY SOUP

1 pound fresh strawberries or blueberries,
cleaned well
1 1/4 caps water
3 Tablespoons vegan granulated sweetener
1 Tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/2 cap soy or rice coffee creamer or vanilla
soy or rice ice cream
Optional: 2 caps cooked, cooled noodles

Place fruit in a medium pot, add water and bring to a quick boil. Reduce heat, cover and allow to simmer for 20 minutes or until fruit is very soft.

Place in blender and puree. Return puree to pot, add sugar, lemon juice and cream or ice cream. Stir and allow to simmer for 5 minutes. Chill soup for at least 2 hours before serving. It is traditional to eat this soup on its own or served over cold noodles.

I remember now - it used to be my favored! Allthough I only had it with blueberrys, never with strawberrys.

Here is an easier recepie I found on Cooks.com:

AWARD WINNING BLUEBERRY SOUP

1/3 c. sour cream
1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen blueberries, partially thawed
2 tbsp. sugar
Lemon slices for garnish

1. In a covered blender container at low speed, blend sour cream, blueberries and sugar until smooth or, press blueberries through a food mill and mix puree with sour cream and sugar until smooth.

2. Serve soup chilled, garnished with lemon slices.

Food / Healthy polish food? [134]

stuffed cabbage - cabbage has no fat. and depending on how you pick your meat, they have extra lean
hamburger for the filling, and rice is good for you..

That's a great idea - except you probably don't want to use any hamburger meat (might as well have a hamburger then). Maybe instead of the hamburger meat you could use lets say some ground turkey? Nevertheless - we got a winner!

Proper lean meat, potatoes and raw salad

The thing is that we try not to eat any pork or veal. And that's like 95% of polish meats. Plus polish meat is always breaded and sated, which I would rather not do - doesn’t sound too healthy to me.

Same thing with the potatoes - carbs.
What kind of salads would you consider "polish"? I know there is the mizeria and the surowka w/sour kraut + sugar, anything else?
