Genealogy / How to Find Birth Records in Poland? [16]

@nyphri22
It won't be possible because of the privacy laws.
Try getting your original birth record to find your biological parents and then look for your siblings via social media.

Genealogy / How to Find Birth Records in Poland? [16]

@RHawron
You need to find the place where he was born. Then contact the civil register office there. For records from the former Eastern territories of Poland, contact the civil register office in Warsaw -wydział ksiąg zabuzanskich.

Genealogy / Do I look Polish? (my picture) [375]

@simpleboi95
You wouldn't stand out in a crowd in Poland but also I don't think your looks are typically Polish.
There are red haired people in Poland but not many. I don't see anything particularly Polish in your features either.
Just a regular European guy.

Life / "Weird" "Strange" "Unique" Polish Customs [36]

@delphiandomine
The same sort of people would go crazy about Andrzejki.

Drowning or burning Marzanna is not ecological now -which does make sense actually. She was the Slavic goddess of winter /death.
Check out also Utopiec, Poludnica or Skarbnik if you haven't heard of them.
As for Halloween I would rather compare it to Polish Dziady which kind of disappeared from the Polish culture except for Mickiewicz's books.
BTW, in the past there were both Katarzynki and Andrzejki that somehow merged into one.

How about the presence of mythical creatures like a dragon, a basilisk or a mermaid in our legends?

BTW, when I first read about the basilisk in Harry Potter books, I kept wondering why they didn't take a mirror to fight it. Duh; )

I have googled dorsal hump and Bob Hope - had a look at the noses and don't think either is 'typically' Polish.
Most Ukrainians I have met here don't look much differently than Poles.
Peoples of Europe have been mixing for centuries. There are Germanic, Balkan, Scottish, Jewish (and many more) traces among present day Poles. Some are tall, some are short, some are stocky, some are slender. Certain features may look more familiar but that's all.

Life / "Weird" "Strange" "Unique" Polish Customs [36]

Christmas Eve dinner is more festive than Christmas dinner -there are some customs connected with it as well like: hay under the table cloth, twelve dishes, no meat or starting the dinner when the first star appears in the sky. Also an empty plate on the table for a wanderer /deceased family members.

Easter Palms and blessing food on Easter Saturday.
Andrzejki - st Andrew Day.
All Saints Day.
Marzanna.
Demons from the folklore like Bobok/Bebok /Bobo, licho, Rokita or Boruta.
Kolednicy.
Welcoming people with bread and salt on important occassions.

Love / How do Polish men feel about gender equality? [780]

Have a look at this - starring a man in love with one woman for years who cares for her - apparently a beta male according to some. Mr Jason Momoa ;)

@kondzior
How about omega males who think they're alpha but talk so much rubbish that women are sick and tired of them so the alpha wannabes get no sex?

Genealogy / Kocielko surname - I would appreciate any info [44]

If you're looking for metrical records you can look for their birthplace on szukajwarchiwach.pl
You need to know their religion - Bazyli sounds RC but Wasyl sounds GC or Christian Orthodox. Both are equivalents for Basil.
Check American records to find their place of birth.
Even if the records are not available online, you can contact the archives to check the records for you.

Language / Which books do native Polish people in Poland use to learn Polish? [72]

Never heard of Pracowita matka either.
Elementarz Falskiego is kind of legendary - used at schools to teach reading and writing from 1910 to 1982 (in several editions).
Standard Polish is taught at Polish schools. Mostly, I think.
Other books used to teach Polish kids reading and writing: Litery or more recently Elementarz odkrywców, Elementarz XXI wieku.
Plus books for children both by Polish and foreign authors are read according to the curriculum.

Genealogy / Lomza Catholic Church marriage and birth records [8]

@PeeWee
What religion did he observe? Archived RC records are available online from 1890 on szukajwarchiwach.pl.

@JanczewskiB
Where was he born? What religion did he observe?

Before you start research in Poland, you need to gather as much information as possible in the US.

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

It's related to hormons. Women need a certain percentage of fat to bear a child. That's the reason why anorectic women have problems with periods. On the other hand, it's easier for guys to grow muscles due to testosterone.

Life / All Things Christmassy in Poland [322]

Traditionally we don't eat meat on Christmas Eve.
Even for breakfast. Then you don't eat anything till the dinner. Again no meat, just fish. It's just a Polish tradition as there's no rule in the Catholic church that forbids eating meat on this day.

Pierogi, carp and other fish, sauerkraut with forest mushrooms, beetroot soup or forest mushroom soup, kutia etc.Traditions vary depending on families but generally speaking all dishes are meatless and dishes include fish, forest mushrooms, sauerkraut, poppy seed etc so things that were easily available in the middle of winter.

As for the next two days of Christmas, as far as my family is concerned, we don't have food that is especially eaten on Christmas only (unlike Christmas Eve). Sometimes we have fish, sometimes duck or mushroom soup or beetroot soup with meat filled uszka -we don't have these on Christmas Eve.

The reality is that everyone is pretty full anyway and it's hard to eat more. So when you have guests you try to make them eat what you prepared but they're full. And when you visit people you're full anyway so it's hard to eat anything they serve.

But there's always place for some serniczek.

Within few days you say/hear: Nie jedz. To na Święta which soon changes into: Jedz, jedz, bo się zmarnuje.

Life / So if Poland is apparently "97% Polish" according to official statistics, what is the other 3%? [68]

@Ironside
Thanks for your effort but you probably don't know the answer either.
The thesis stated was that Poland was a success when it was mostly homogeneous. My question was when exactly was it?
Your post didn't answer it.

BTW, there are other things in your post I could debate but I'm sick and tired of sub-topics that kind of take the thread off topic.

Life / So if Poland is apparently "97% Polish" according to official statistics, what is the other 3%? [68]

I always kind of thought our country was the most powerful in the times of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, roughly speaking with Poles, Ruthenians, Scots, Jews, Tatars etc lived here together with their heterogenous customs and religions.

But I was apparently wrong.
So when was that time Poland was the strongest due to its homogenity? Like between 1968 -1989????
Were there more homogeneous periods????
Someone enlighten me, please.

History / Question about Warsaw Ghetto (shared building?) and Monument [29]

@mafketis
That wasn't a real question. Your comment made me laugh.
The fact is that Jews lived among Poles so very few didn't speak Polish if any.

Think of diaries from ghettos and how many of them were actually in Polish.
Just like Roma people, just because they speak their language at home, it doesnt mean they're not fluent in Polish.
