Study / 90% of Poles have university degree? [57]

I resent the recurring theme on this forum that cleaning toilets is something demeening. Such attitude demonstrates communist indoctrination character damage. All work is a noble act of man, as long as it benefits other people. (So spies and political hitmen excluded). The reward for the headlong trend to look down on manual work, is that we now have a severe shortage of public toilets in Poland. Not sure if any stats exist to back my claim, but the per captia ratio of places where one can use a clean and free WC in Poland whilst walking down a street, vs. same in US must be in 1/1000s .

Love / Why am I so sad about the fact that Polish guys are so good [11]

I agree with you, Felicity. Not only because I am one of those lovely Poles. You must know that there arn't that many of us left, would you belive? Certainly on this forum. And my eyes are blue, so you would get your "twinkles" from me in blue, not green. Even better right? As some have suggested here, we Poles do tend to repeat ourselves. So, whenever you ask me if I love you, you won't just get a 'Yes' for an answer. It will be Yes, Yes Yes, Yes, or even Tak,Tak, Tak,Tak...which may put your mind to the themes of traditional, rural Poland, where they use many 0... tractors, which give similar sounds.

Genealogy / British name Russell in Poland [26]

Against a growing number of British names I do not hear of two names getting given to boys in Poland : Graham and Russell... Is it because they do not ring nice jn Polish ears?

Language / Slow Talk in Polish TV [6]

A bilingual Pole, and switching between national news TV channels, I notice a flaw in the Polish TV studio discourse. People, usually some professors or journslists, come to their interviews and debates, without properly preparing their statements. Clearly, overstimating their ability to express their thoughts 'ad lib'. Or, being lazy? I keep hearing time after time, someone, apparantly eager to say something, and once at the microphone, blabbering on, spluttering, pausing to rack their brains for words, repeating vacouous phrases, tip-toeing to finally make their point. Polish language, quite inefficient in the noise/content ratio, makes it worse still. Then I switch to US, or UK TV, and my problem seems to goes away.. Am I imagining this, or is there a problem? Is it that Poles are always happy to wait patiently for things to take their natural course, no matter how long, and I must... take a deep breath and chill out?

Work / The level of English of Polish teachers of English. What do you think of it? [101]

Same as most foreign teachers, the class overlay Eng. words onto their native thought train. This is ok at basic command. When they move up to native speakers, who speak little Polish, nobody straightens them out. So you get students who can present in English, but their free talk sucks an awful lot as their 1st language syntax and semantics get in the way. Eng-Pol syntax are way apart.

Language / Cultural disparities shown through Polish and English languages [86]

The ethinc character of Poles tends to speak for rigid rules in the use of language, so there is zero evolution or growth, in an already depleted semantics. Due to some cultural reasons Polish scholars have discouraged elesticity. The result is that all new words are foreign words. Many do not fit in well phonologically. Furthermore, Polish lexicon gives very little room for finessing expressions. So, the only way left around it is through elaboration, common among young students. This is why in general, the brighter the person the more verbiage you get to convey same content. This is a very restrictive environment for young people to grow any cognitive intelligence. The most obvious sign of Polish speakers lagging behind here is in the huge number of English terms and phrases without unique counterparts.

Language / Cultural disparities shown through Polish and English languages [86]

Patronise; condescend, obfuscate, provaricate, egrandise, bully. Or, hybrids like: weaponised healthcare, identity politics, deep state... It wouldn't take long to fill a page of missing counterparts. Whole notions do not exist, not just words. Our underdeveloped semantics gives something away. What is it?

News / Throwing away the constitution in Poland? [626]

My sense is that the role of national governments, inc. their rulings, will gradually move towards a daytine TV "reality show" model, giving way to the model where the real authority slides down to local security juntas, by some loosley defined emergency edicts, letting them basically do what they feel like with citizens.

News / Presidential elections 2020 - your opinions about campaign, candidates [2223]

At least in US and UK you get the impression that there is a single person behind government decisions. DT or BJ preempt, persuade and justify if there is blowback. In Poland, as clearly visible around C19, its hard to be sure who carries the can for all the decisions coming down. They all glib-talk their way along on the telly, but who does what is shrouded in mystery. This presidential election, e.g. can anyone tell what decisions could be credited to our president?

UK, Ireland / Why are Polish people, especially women, so disrespectful toward the English? [437]

Back to the topic, I would hold off kicking anyone out of anywhere. English women and Polish women look for different things in men. And all things factored in, it would be pretty odd if it were otherwise. A Polish guy is a ruffty-tuffty, straight-up, resourceful guy, ready to fix the toilet, climb into the flat through the window - kind of guy, who won't ask his lady unnecessary, awkward questions. An English lady would have to be 'defrosted' from before WWII to look for such qualities in a bloke. UK ladies like gentle looks, easy manner, dress code, someone clued up on gossip, a fun conversation. No way a Polish guy could amuse a UK woman with his humor, or his clothes sense, unless she a lost article, or an ethnic herself. We Poles are nowhere near the latitude of UK home counties humor. Check some criptic cross words in Daily Telegraph. See if your can conjure up a couple slogans. A UK guy would be very lucky to find a Polka happy with his softly spoken, tentative, ever consenting, vague talk, who shies away from leading and keeping his woman where he thinks she should belong. BTW in comparison, UK guy is much better off trying his luck in US or Canada, where his accent will immefiately put him between an intellectual and a scientist, even if he can't spell his own name.

News / Britain - problem for Poland and Poles? [103]

Poles are targeted for only one reason: because they are Catholic. Having arrived in UK many decades ago as a young lad, I was able to master the language to an unrecignizable level. My names also, as it happens could slip under radar. So, I can present here my unique perspective. Which is that so long as my Polish identity remained hidden I invariably received a better treatment everywhere! This especially as a contractor in getting hired to good professional, well paid posts. This was before internet profiling which now gives recruiters deep insight into your past from name /birthdate straight away. When I moved to north america it lead to scores of very funny ( or not) situations, where having presented myself as a British subject I would get offered some glamorous propositions of jobs, relocation packages, green cards, for whole family, on the company bill, only to watch the same person who made them, a day or two later, suddenly lying their arse off to explain why the offer was no longer "available" , "put on hold", off due to sudden budget cuts etc. It became so predictable that, to save time, I began asking agents ahead of time to check if their "great" offer would stay up if I were a Polish national, which in all cases meant that they would never (!) call me again, thereafter.

News / Britain - problem for Poland and Poles? [103]

Ok About UK. In my opinion NONE of the so called attacks against Poles in UK. are randam, or by random people. They are all preordained and organized by UK's funny handshake lords. Is that come out loser to the topic?

News / Britain - problem for Poland and Poles? [103]

The first thing that struck me about this particular forum is in the coarseness of expressed opinions. We Poles are impulsive, and disrespectful of the other, alien to all charity. Our comments rarely show any depth, ingenuity, or are remotely funny. Now that I live in Poland, every day my money papers over the holes in Poland's commercial ethos, being accused of lying or fraud in shops, refused refund, whenever I return any of the substandard products sold here to the store. Never a word of appology. On driving in Poland I won't pontificate. We are savages, my friends. Let's make no bones about it. A character established through occupations and foreign subjugation. Contrary to what you say, I do not lie or steal. Nor mascarade as smone else on line. Sylvio is a nick. As it happens a British citizen of 28 years, having worked for 12 big UK corporations, I left England in early 2007, to move to US/Canada, prior to the big influx of our countrymen to the islands. So, speaking of me, try not to think of yourselves.
