News / Grzegorz Braun's firing squad? [39]

I would take a dozen of reporters from Gw and from two dozen from TVN and traitors and execute every tenth.

I can see how it is more along the lines of having execution as a penalty for treason.

But a penalty should be for deeds.
I feel that I would take a dozen from this group and a dozen from that and execute every tenth feels like a random "threat to everyone".

News / Grzegorz Braun's firing squad? [39]

Ok I don't feel comfortable discussing in English niuances of speech said in Polish.

What I can say is the wording was unfortunate, reading just that article it felt very strong. Listened to get more context it feels less strong but still a bit disturbing.

And no, after consideration I don't think he should be punished.

And I didn't say misinformation is not deed. I did say you do not execute people just because they work for company you believe is a traitor.

Life / Good account of Poland's Andrzejki? [23]

So today is "Andrzejki". Are you going to celebrate Andrzej's nameday and the last days before Advent? Are you going to predict your future?

News / Grzegorz Braun's firing squad? [39]

I would not comment on my surname.
It's possible I said it to strongly. I watched bit of that video, and it didn't feel so strong. Reading excerpt out of context often makes things worse than they are.

And in fact this whole situation makes the idea of journalists as traitors more clear to me.

And when I said "Nazists" I meant "hitlerowcy".
And the words create disturbing image of taking random people from some group that is claimed guilty putting them in line , counting to ten and execututing publicly every "tenth". And maybe that is not only Hitler-ruled Germany thing. But it's what comes to mind of a Pole

i just read what I wrote before, and I can see the mistake I made. when I wrote "stupid hate speak" I meant this is a stupid way to say "hate speak", as in my opinion it put opponents as victims not threat.

and "hate speak" was too strong words

Language / what is the difference between gawędziliśmy and porozmawialiśmy? [5]

You shouldn't learn "gawędziliśmy" i "pogawędziliśmy" to use, just to understand. Rozmawialiśmy/porozmawialiśmy could be always used instead.

Gawędziliśmy is more literary and informal. It's about every-day things or memories, nothing too serious. Also a bit longer.

News / Grzegorz Braun's firing squad? [39]

What the speaker meant : We should have law that punishes treason with death using firing squad. Then few dozen of reporters and other traitors should be investigated and 10% of them would be found guilty and sentenced. (and I may not be precise in English, he believes those 10% are guilty , and that few dozen are not random, there is nothing random in it just the way justice should work and amount of people suspected and probable ratio of the ones really guilty). If there in no punishment for treason people will do whatever they want.

What dziennik.pl says : For example we take 12 GW journalists , 24 people who work at TVN , not to mention other traitors and execute every tenth. If that doesn't happen it means you can do anything there is no punishment.

Imagery in my head : we take those who are believed to be traitors, random dozen journalists and random two dozen tvn workers count to ten and every "number 10" is killed.

Maybe it is just in my head, that is what you get after living too close to "place of execution" (Meaning a wall with a list of people executed there during WWII).

Of course "fakty" said this the way Politicians would have to answer: this should be investigated.

News / Grzegorz Braun's firing squad? [39]

Contexts is everything!

this is where I point out thet after watching a bit of a video I understand what he wanted to say. But whet then out of context as in dziennik.pl it feels serious. This is why politicians had to say it should be investigated to TVN reporters - because they were given words without context.

Also how good is your Polish? I don't know if I should explain every word to you, some meaning could be lost in translation, and I'm not comfortable discussing this in English, maybe we could move to Polish thread.

Food / Sernik Wiedenski [15]

If your polish shop doesn't have "twaróg sernikowy" you could use twaróg en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quark_(cheese) as Polonius said. I would say it is a more traditional approach.

Also "mąka tortowa" is a type of flour, it contains only - flour type 450, nothing else. We don't have self-raising flour in Poland.

Language / Addressing a widow who lives in Poland [12]

Actually the doktorowa , prezesowa, profesorowa (or inżynierowa - drives my mum crazy) are still sometimes used. We have prezydentowa - wife of president.

And there used to be that Tomaszowa, Józefowa, Karolowa thing, but it went out of use even before surnames with -owa and -ówna

Life / If you are Polish abroad or of Polish descent, do you celebrate St. Nicholas day? [33]

Tomorrow is Saint Nicholas day. In Poland it's the day when children get presents under their pillows, or from actual Saint Nick they meet at church.

I today I had a chat with my co-worker, whose all kids live in UK and her 5 grandchildren are raised there. They won't get presents tonight or tomorrow.

So, what about you? Do you celebrate St Nick's day. Why? Why not?

grzyby-polskie.eu.interia.pl/16.htm

Haven't heard about those before, and English wikipedia has just Latin names for it.

Marysieńka- why usually? Pieczarka is always what it is, and it is in the picture :)

Wikipedia says, that there are more kinds of mushrooms at pieczarka family. That one is the one I always think of when I say pieczarka, but then I wanted to be precise.

News / March for Poland's democracy organized by PiS 13th Dec [49]

I think they missed one date. They could have a march last week a the November uprising anniversary. Also I don't remember a march for October revolution. I mean we should commemorate every possible thing with freedom marches.

Language / Polish pronunciation for Christmas Carol [4]

You can even type bits
"Przy - bie - że - li do Be - tle - jem pa - ste - rze" to hear it more clearly, as accents are different in songs than in real speech.

Very important are ł ę ą ś ć ź ń ż ó
Also you are up to a challenge as it is a fast carol.

Food / How natural is food in Poland? [25]

can someone reccomend me a good polish dish that I can get everywhere so I can try it in my trip to krakow.

Do you want organic / natural food like the tread title suggests, or just standard food?

I'd start with pierogi, as they are traditional, cheap and avaliable almost everywhere.

Also you'll see people selling "obwarzanki" and "oscypki" everywhere.

Food / How natural is food in Poland? [25]

Beats pickled cabbage and tinned fish paste from the Polski Sklep any day :P

Home-made sour cabbage beats one from the bag, especially one that has to travel abroad.
Fresh pierogi beat frozen ones.

And while Italian is very popular here, Chinese and Indian are not. If you want to try other, not Polish food in Kraków I'd suggest Ukrainian, Jewish, there is also very popular Georgian franchise.

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

Really? And in UK and USA and other countries there aren't any homeless people? Who don't want to go to shelters?

It's a tragedy when somebody dies, either if it's because they didn't go to shelters or they fell and lost consciousness or were too drunk to notice it's freezing. But all it proves is that we have that sort of climate and

The sub-zero temperatures also claimed the lives of seven people in the Czech Republic and winter claimed the lives of six across the Balkans, in Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina

Food / How natural is food in Poland? [25]

Ok Are we talking about:
how natural Polish food on average is?
How natural Polish food imported to Uk is?
What meals we reccomend in Kraków, tahat are widely avaliable, and typically Polish?

I have an opinion about a quality of food, and could to some extend recommend some meals in Kraków but have no idea about quality of food in Polish shops.

All I know is that frozen meals or microwave ready are always worse than real thing, and it doesn't matter if it's Indian, Italian, Chinese or Polish.

News / PiS wants symmetry for minorites living in Poland [71]

The case is interesting, but of one person only.
We Poles have this fear
"Nie będzie Niemiec pluł nam w twarz
ni dzieci nam Germanił"

German won't spit in our face and won't Germanise our children - this could have been our anthem. It did happen in the past and now PIS has something to play with.

News / PiS wants symmetry for minorites living in Poland [71]

Although given history Pole s have every right to be suspicious!

It is a generalization, but what I meant is that there is history and small things are used to remind it , and PIS uses it. I don't know if this is the cause to justify the means.
