Language / Find error in a Polish article [45]

great game- hopefully Im on during next posting.

Not as game but my former language buddy used to have me "translate" odd english in news he reads.
Half the time he had right to be confused since what had him flummoxed was poor grammar, mispelled or colloquial >_<
Specially stuff off some site called TED.

Love / My Polish wife's family hate me. Maybe it is because I'm black. Advice needed. [87]

MAYBE?

if you have to say "maybe" it is probably a lot more than just your color alone. I don't know a lot of polish peeps but those I do are all quite blunt. Some might even think rude depending on upbringing. I am pretty sure if it was just your color you would have already have no doubt by hearing the key phrases/ words repeated by now.

So far all I can assume is that you ar male, have black skin and are not Polish or American

reasons they may not like you:Bieganski mentioned some.......
Are they Catholic? is she? ...are YOU?
With that in mind are you : Divorced- not catholic- did you marry with church blessing?
How long have you been married?
Are you applying for citizenship not your birth country when she met you? Are you looking for Polish citizenship after a short time married? Would they think you married her for EU citizenship?

Are you much older-an immigrant in your usual location? Are you/were you illegal? Do you have a good job? Is it better than hers (traditionlists do not approve of manwives)?

Do you have other children previous?
Are you overweight? ..are you (it is always subjective lol) homely? Are you from same class/ Education level as her family?

Were they expecting you? are you staying with family (if not expected could be seen freeloading) or in Hotel? Do you speak Polish? If not how can you "fight" with them? they speak english to you.

Anything can set protective parents off. And even less can set off trolly ones. I doubt anyone here can help you without a least a couple details like

Nationality-time married-religion(if any)-respective ages- and employability.

My mum-in-law to be hates me already. They don't even know my ethnicity. Many of her reasons are not applicable and will fade with time. But some of her reasons may never be resolved. My guy is hurt and was surprised, he loves his family and is quite close, but he waded through it.

We plan our plans regardless. Sometimes only time and proving them wrong is the option.
As long as your wife is strong enough and connected enough to you to be able to not have family support? I would just smile, nod and move along.

USA, Canada / Why do Americans (and Canadians) hate Polish people? [226]

Hmm...
LOL ..I'm an American and Im gonna mate a Polish people.. <_< No "hate"

But I haven't seen any hate towards Polish or Poland even in general. Stereotypes are unremembered. Growing up in the 60s Polish jokes had pretty much died out. Certainly didn't hear at school anymore. There were new ethnic underdogs to bozos to belittle. Now they are more like amusing antiques..flapper jokes, italian, irish & polish jokes. Saw some in a book called Truely Tasteless Jokes part 2.

Been in love with the mythical side of Hussars since was a lil girl.
I love certain foods that I know as Polish. As far as I know I don't have any Pole in me.......

And aside from a few ***** ones from the east; most canucks I ever met were mellow. Not hating on much of anything.

This is a weird question and I've seen it before worded dif. Heck most present day Americans barely know where Poland is unless they are from Chicago. ;p

USA, Canada / Rodeo Ben the "Polish Cowboy" [46]

Wrangler jeans are still widely sought after

Lee and Wrangler are still popular brands amongst real "cowboys" and farmers as well as Carhardts, Maverick, good ol Sears Rustlers (Lee sub?).

Especially slender people, the average American looks like a sausage in those brands. But nothing frames and enhances a cowboy butt like Wrangler.
Cowgirls lean towards Lee.

a search "cowboy butts" and most images have 80% the iconic large tan Wrangler patch.

Language / Shortened Polish male names [7]

What do you want it to mean?
Since he is your manager I would assume he likes you and thinks you would make a sweet personal friend..? So is allowing a closer warmer form of address not encouraged with everyone.

"Lady" in English? Just "hey lady" or with your name?

but maybe he LIKE YOU likes you..... ^_^

With English, my guy often calls me m'lady. I started catching on when that and "baby" started creeping in as diminutives that maybe I was not just a "buddy" anymore :) My guy can't have any shorter a name

News / Poland in the US news? wow ..that is rare. [3]

Yesterday, Poland was in the news on a bus crash that could have been worse. From how they worded it...two 'old' ladies wrestled the wheel when the driver succumbed to something? (drunk? death? diebtic coma?)

I didn't catch it all since I was out to pick something up.

My minds eye has some little bird like my x-inlaw Baba and some big Mama trying to throw off the driver and get the bus stopped...lol. They hit somethings but...all okay now? Driver alive?

*edit : yes I know 'P"oland. I didn't ninja strike my shift hard enough*

Law / Divorce in Poland - fault - rights to property predating the marriage [34]

Angel, don't try to make it "Polish Men". That would be unfair and unrealistic. [EDIT: As dread beat me to saying . :) ] Cheaters are cheaters regardless of nationality. That is what P3 was getting at. If you are looking for assurance that your Polish man is a keeper this would not be the thread to do it >_<

And OP didn't as yet say that it was himself. It would be moot to ask Var ..if I remember comments few of his posts, it is the wife that is Polish anyway.

So another line to question... that 'preowned' property was in Poland or elsewhere?
Inherited (which can give most weight but sometimes court may decide the kids are next in line early depending on the scope of asset)?
And was she needed at the time to buy it even if they were not yet married?
Did she invest in improvements?

Though I am no atty... I would venture to say it does not look sunny for your friend.
I can't see how owning it matters in the end in this case as presented.
Unless Poland is radically different, here even in podunk , man-friendly States south?
If the wife with two kids miscarried through the personal upset of his having got another woman pregnant at same time (and that IS how any good atty will word it for her, even if subjective-? bad timing is bad) and he tries to divorce her at that time or after to boot? They will bite such a big chunk of his assets for maintaince(aka alimony) and child support it doesn't matter who owns it on paper. Having kids can nullify most Pre-nups even, unless it had specific and detailed provisions concerning.

Plus this "property" it is a home that the woman and children live in.. ? most courts will not just give them the keys to the street overnight. He'll need a top shark in this bloodpool.Which also costs. And arrange his schedule to accomodate a session with the most neutral judge in is region.

Opinion basis: NOT ATTY or currently working in field - 4 years as paralegal in US States of WA and AZ

UK, Ireland / What does English sound like to the Poles? [30]

Hungarian is not Slavic though, not even Indo-European ;)

heh .you got me .. neither is Romanian and a few others in region. And OP didn't list what he considered 'slavic'.
Sometimes I forget to track into post communist era view. Instead of the old US one where all east of free germany is East Europe Commie Russia. xD

Oh yes, there's probably only Portuguese (from Lisbon maybe) to compete with Polish ;)

Heh, that may pinpoint my enjoyment of soft sounding languages. My family I grew up up with primarily spoke Brasilian Portuguese, pre-20s czech(Bohemian) and Texan English with select older members speaking German, Euskara, Tsalagi and some kind of gaelic

Though I was wording it silly as a meme reference:

Life / Men in Poland in the forest? Just men? [133]

bit like the wilds of kentuckey where the people have illegal stills

LAWL!!

Though there is your answer. When you first started posting I thought ,"it's not unusual for hicks". At least in the back areas of TN, NC, SC, KY and even AZ (prolly W VA & GA too but not lived there). but I withheld earlier comment since maybe it was some kind of specific thing. What I know about Poland can fit in a resume folder.

But in US rural areas it is common to see the g/f leaning on the car hood as well..there was always that clique of 6-7 guys that go do 'manly' stuff sans the nagging, want his sweater, wanna go out feminine half. And hung with the 'lucky' singles. But hanging parking lots or such often has the cops shoo you away as trespassers not customers. And public drinking is no no.

Usually the couples go out to the woods/middle of desert? hang at one campfire with a few singles and the singles at another. The singles rarely had girls near..what girl with ANY reputation is gonna hang in middle of nowhere with a bunch of guys and drink or gossip about...girls?

Since trailriding, hunting and firearms in general are not really the social norm them all hanging about might appear odd. But I would still say it is just the "man bonding" thing.

Hmm souls for sale? I am a ginger... I need them! or at least portions in order to keep my freckle count up and illusion of eternal youth!

UK, Ireland / What does English sound like to the Poles? [30]

Well, Hungarian is not a good example here ;)

Well he said "slavic" as in all in one bag everything of languages that sound ALL the same and slushy to boot.

I love Hungarian accented English and like hearing it spoken

I also would say that Polish has a whole bag of "shhh". But I like the softening sounds even though it makes it epicfail for me to learn to speak it. I also like languages that use lively intonation

My Polish fellow thinks I sound sexxy for the most part. But when I asked him, said if had to give it thought to describe, english generally sounds dull and dead to his ear.

UK, Ireland / What does English sound like to the Poles? [30]

Hasn't this subject come up before, only like two months ago or so?

They may have regional accents but they still all sound very nasally when they talk.

That I find surprising. I would be last to claim the english sounds musical or romantic. I think of it as useful, and I do like when certain foreign accents are applied. But other than far north and twangy areas, I would not have thought to apply "nasal".

Sorry to say but most Polish/Slavic/Russian languages sounds "ugly".

You are saying Polish sounds like Slovak sounds like Hungarian sounds like Ukranian sounds like Russian..all? 0_0

Jeez no wonder so many other countries think that all americans must all be doofuses when they meet a tourist.
I can tell the difference between regional flourishes even if I don't know what region it is from. Maybe I'm different because of multi lingual childhood.

Still, no way I would say that my friend speaking Slovak sounded JUST like my grandparents speaking old imported Czech which sounds like my Ex inlaws Russian which in turn sounds that sounds like my honey. Just my language buddy and Honey sound noticeably different as Polish nationals.

and not all are "slushy" even. and YAY Klingon! tlhIngan Hol Dajatlh'a'?

Language / Differences in Polish and English idioms [69]

(Eng) "kick the bucket"(Pl) "Kick the calendar"

My polish language buddy cracked up when he heard me say that..then came me listing all the similar I knew> he was very interested in colloquials like "dirt nap""bought the farm"

My Fiance cracks up occasionally and has to stop the presses so I can explain when one just flows into the conversation

And while we're on the subject of idioms, note to all, virtually NOBODY uses the phrase "raining cats and dogs" !!

I'm american born and heard that one all my life in every location. But I have always lived south the 40degree mark and mostly West Coast

Southern expressions..
happier than a dead pig in sunshine - happy indeed
plumb tuckered -exhausted
he loves her so much he'd rope the moon for her- loved indeed (Pecos Bill , texas fairy tales)
get off your high horse -quit being pretentious/being condecending
Ain't got sense to come in from the rain - irresponisble or no common sense
right as rain- correct

because my generation dad was older maybe..but I use and many of my family in Texas family use:

Now your cooking with gas! (now your have a great idea/are on the right track
Best idea/greatest thing since sliced bread! (innovative or simply great
someone is "The cat's meow"= all that and a bag of chips( AWESOME
up the creek without a paddle (in serious dilema
so broke he can't even pay attention
naked as a jaybird (completely disarmed or unrobed..though birds have feathers ; / )
apple didnt fall far from tree (about a child resembling parent in habit or appearance
almost only counts in horseshoes 'n' hand grenades (it doesnt count/matter
what's that got to do with the price of tea in china? ("that" -usually a coment or observation- has no bearing on current conversation/problem

6 ways from sunday (using every option
shutting the barn door after the horse got out (too late
you can "x" (argue, run, sleep etc) til the cows come home (til the end

so many more... but these are the ones that amused my verbal contacts

Life / Polish pretense - what's the deal? [72]

may I ask is running for fitness and fun a done thing in your area?

Not at my present location in Podunk, NC where I am helping my mom parse out 4 lockers worth of collected..JUNK before taking her home with me.

Locals would think me insane and maybe a lil tetched! is NOT recreation in their reckoning. Na dynamitin crow rookeries..that thar be the way to have fun! *sigh* here status is biggest fish, biggest truck, most guns, most hunting dogs (oh and sons after that) and most subservient mate..really upper is having a Basstracker!

Spandex.lawlz! I pointed an laughed at "Roadies'. I was a sponsored gravity assist racer til my youngest came on the scene.

At home in Arizona, and while I was in FL ,it is common to see cyclists and runners. Bike lanes are common most places I've lived.

I am Jockette. Was in track and basketball in school. So I am more active than the norm. I don't do PT or sports recent, been somewhat indolent past couple years hiding from inhopsitable (for me) weather. Lucky with my metabolism I am not a cow, but my tone went phfft.

EDIT: to add..I am in US..I am importing my Polish dish before going to where the recipe is made

Love / Marrying a Polish divorcee - no church wedding? [19]

as it is encouragement to those who ***

but priest shouldn't agree ***

replace baptism question divorce and you have the answer for your friend

Not sure why the baptism debate is taking over

Maybe I am missing a perspective in this somewhere.
I was not exactly the most pious of Catholics in some life choices but even though I am divorced, I can remarry in the church .But it was nearly 8 months of jumping through hoops and my Parish Deacon insisted after I came to him before it was even finalized. But in my case it is which criteria DIDN'T I meet. : (

The divorcee the OP's friend is so enamoured of obviously thinks she has no merit to go through process of absolving her divorce as cannot meet any the criteria.

Did she even have her first marriage through the church? My first marriage was not... if I have another it will be. It would also be my last.

My confusion is if she is irreligious enough to divorce through civil route ...and still willing to marry in ANY way (which means conjugal relations for sure ^-^) why only civil? If a practicing Catholic she therefore still would be "in sin"... So what is missing here?

Why worry about remarriage as sinful in a different church unless divorce wasn't her idea, the partner is one that filed? Is your friend trying to get her to convert to something else?

Most protestant christian churches (least here in US) don't require that BOTH parties be in that religion (baptist, Methodist, what have you). If she is that worried about staying catholic proper to point of not wanting that wedding... she shouldn't be remarrying at all. Lot of mixed signals.

The handbook link is something your friend should peek at.

Life / Polish pretense - what's the deal? [72]

? they wash their cars all the time regardless that the engine is a piece of trash

washing a car is showing off? 0_0

My auto loving and collecting family wash every week..but I was taught the purpose was longevity of the paint and metal beneath by that token.

To wax without causing damage you have to clean of road salts, tar, bird droppings and certain tree saps..so you wash.

It would be to me a sign of careless wealth (and laziness) to NOT wash a vehicle..especially an expensive one! since this indicates one feels it disposable and if it is ruined, you will have it repainted ......if you you haven't traded for newer improved one by then

will exercise more this year I promise!!!

pictures this summer or it never happened >_< (I have same pledge myself)

Life / Polish pretense - what's the deal? [72]

<_<

You sure you didn't accidently visit us here in US and not "Poland? Was anybody holding a white and red cup with a gold arched symbol?

lol..@ rom
@OP: Wow! you say keep it civil..but seriously; wow. I am just waiting for you to get both barrels unloaded on you when the actual polish are here..especially teh fems. >You are displeased by the appearance of seemingly single females in the student body of where ever you "shopped" and call them 'spinsters'? < are they are really all past their prime and still in school? Maybe it was exam week and burning the candle, and trading sleep to study for getting good marks was more important than putting on makeup and becoming a peacock parade of dishes for your oh-so-discerning palate to sample? Maybe they are feminazis?

Or maybe they are an independent and socially supported breed of young women that can concentrate on their educations BEFORE getting married or distracting themselves with being "in a relationship".

I don't care what nationality you put in place of "Polish", as a female I found it swarmy, disrespectful, trolly and kinda creepy in a sex tourist way.

BTW "middle class' 'upper class" type consumerism/display is not simply 'western' and has been around as a behavior far longer (I am better than you because my mate has 37 gold rings around her lovely stretched neck or read some historical social history of ..hmm..lets pick HAN DYNASTY)

Language / Why is the Polish language so difficult? [246]

I am not sure it is so difficult after first barriers are passed. In my case it is pronounciations.

My problem is not so much the Polish as certain consonant combinations close to each other. But then again, I have a mild
speech impediment only exacerbated by wisdom teeth, still having baby teeth and having my adult upper "first molar" set knocked out.
Which is where these letter sets are supposedly to be pronounced I came to find out recently.

I can hear the differences, but lot of the "shushing" sounds mentioned earlier are my bane since I lisp them terrible. What are they called Frictives?

(though I thought ch= hard "H"? even a nearly "f" sound if like the word for moment)

Life / Video games centers and culture in Poland [22]

Merged: Popularity of video games in general and the shift to MMO/MMORPGs with Polish playerbase

There is no specific area for Games-Video-Electronic media but it is hobby/entertainment /recreational activity. And let me state up front "with Polish" is not because I think OMG ..how can they rise to this? But it is Polish I am curious about and the main object of this forum. One can mentally replace "with German":"with Slovakian":"with Turkish" if you wish to :p :::::

I am not sure how many nerdy gamer types lurk here specially those of us who play less as adults with responsibilities, but never give it up totally...

I am one who went d20 RPG>RP VideoGames>Muds >MMORPGs
I've always enjoyed international penpals. Internet forums, Online games combined with communication like vent , skype and teamspeak has indulged that pleasure to a fuller amount.

What is the median age of a gamer in Poland?
Which came first to lead to gameplay in co operatives that are more than often English speaking? Embracing consumerism or "westernization"? Are any studies curently done?

Not so big a population change in services like Steam, but I have noticed in several MMO games I play, there is an exponentially growing number of openly Polish players, and Polish oriented Guilds, Especially Star Wars. I just wonder what the change is.

Since EU servers split generally in English/German/French language regardless of the company; I would think they would choose German server for better frame rates and latency. But they are usually on English servers. US eastern servers when their internet will tolerate it.

And the players I've been in vent with improved their English by leaps and bounds are so driven once they are not shy anymore (though sadly picked up very slangy versions to sound so fluent in -lol). I do not think I would fare so well so quickly had I been in all-Polish speaking guild..

Added note: Most of my longtime and close EU "gaming friends" that are not already native speakers or German are Hungarian, Polish, Finns, Swedish and 1-2 Russian & Netherlands,. When I lived west coast I made permanent (over 10 years now) connections with 3 Aussies and 5 S Koreans. ^_^ plus of course handfuls that are in US like me. We have even met in groups at selected locations.

Language / POLISH 18 - 30 years old know MUCH BETTER ENGLISH language than their own native language! [102]

Hmmm... can I be against circuses like Spelling Bees (yes I admit they are entertaining to peek at) and not sound like I think a grasp of spelling (not just hooked on phonics) is bad?

But wish for better base education in the majority of childen... ? even "gasp" if it means no money goes to sports programs?

(<--former jockette. ...was painful to suggest it)
No need fer'n no fancy talk wurds anyhows..it aint gonna git me a job izit? (seriously if my father was alive to see me use lazy composition and grammar as I do on the webz, he'd have to take some bismuth!)

And on the subject.. my fiance has college level written English and quite passable spoken english including a steadily growing vocabulary of colloquial. His accent only becomes apparent in certain words or when he is very tired, but is so soft; I honestly think if he lived in an English speaking country , specially the States he'd be indiscernible from an average Joe after 5 -6 years.

I do not think that would be case if I came to him or we move later to Poland >_<

: ( (why this dropped from post and wouldn't edit.. I cannot guess. Likely user error ) <_<
