I honestly could not say, you would be better off waiting for InWroclaw to answer, he lives in that city.

Well, I was in Skytower yesterday and because they looked at me (perhaps because I looked a bit freaky!) I noticed lots of people yesterday, and a fairly significant number of males 20-40 years of age of Arab and also what might be regarded as Indian appearance. This is a change on a few years back, so I assume that communities are springing up. I certainly look forward to the day when I can get a decent Indian take away here !!!!

Thank you. I am thinking of asking 200,000 PLN/ year. I hope it is fine, comparing to the person who got 186000 in 2009.

I hope all goes well, but I'd not do any of the hanging up the phone stuff suggested elsewhere of course. If they seem reluctant to pay what you want, merely politely suggest what is your minimum figure and say you can't afford to work for less, simple as that. Keep it all polite and good humoured. Of course, you don't need me to tell you this stuff, I know.

(yes they make electronics too, I have an excellent DVD player from their UK distributor, but the Polska TV box adaptor seems to have been made badly)

I can't find a cheap adaptor pushing out 1500mA here and 5V. It's cheaper to buy a whole new box.

I have had a Poland DVB box for 2 years, made by a company beginning with H, and the mains adaptor has packed up after not using it for a year (stored in a dry flat). It's 1.5A and 5V, so not the easiest to replace. When I plugged in a temporary 5V adaptor of 800mA, the box would not work and just gave me a flickering LED light.

They should play just audio only in Polish DVB-T :) Without the vision. Because the difference is in the standard of video encoding.

Do you mean that a Polish DVB box for Polish digital TV will not send a video signal to a British standard TV set via the scart or any video cable? Oh terrific...

Having finally got round to checking my UK DAB radios here, I see they don't pick up any Polish DAB signals except a vague mention in the text window of Polskie Radio but no audio.

This it seems is because Poland uses DAB Plus or DAB+ and although the transmitters are the same the audio encoding is not, hence silence.

A very few DAB radios allow a firmware upgrade to facilitate DAB. But mine seem to not have that happy option.

Poland's TV is now apparently fully digital (like the UK's) which I think means there is at least hope for my UK TV if I use an encoder box for free-to-air Poland TV. Traditionally, UK TVs would not play Poland TV audio, but with the analogue signal now off they'll play absolutely nothing unless a Poland standard Freeview or similar box is hooked up to the TV.

Work / Overtime no honoured by employer in Poland [7]

If they paid you until 5pm but let you go at 3pm, I would doubt there's anything positive that would come of raising it as an issue with HR. If you're unhappy or resent your employer or managers, perhaps start applying for other employment while still in this job because it's usually easier to find a different job when already in a job.

(btw If they deducted 2 hours' pay because they unilaterally decided to shorten the day, you might have a grievance if you really want to be bothered with it, depending on your contract.)

i am planning to move to poland by the end of march'15.

Is this because you have met a Polish man and you are following him back to Poland? If so, hopefully he'll try to help you find something. I think there's not a lot of options in most towns, maybe none. I am not sure there's much demand for Hindi, but you could offer lessons, although don't rely on that for a regular income. Can you maybe teach some other skill, like cooking or dancing or day trading or anything at all? If you have basic Polish, there's hope although not a lot unfortunately. Your best chance might be if your boyfriend's family can use you in their business, if they have one.

Sadly very evident not just in the city centre but greener areas like Krzyki, Sepolno and similar

This is perhaps due to wood or coal being used to heat houses as well as older diesel vehicles clattering up and down the streets, rubbing shoulders with the latest megabuck BMW and Subarus and an assortment of Chelsea tractors that are seen here all over the place, somewhat curiously.

Love / Addressing your Polish in-laws or boy/girlfriend's parents? [49]

I can see what you're saying as it's how in the UK we would address teachers etc, but unless someone has the in-laws from hell, I'm guessing that it wouldn't take that long after first addressing them as Pan/Pani, for them to want to be called by first names. If they don't, then how they are addressed is likely to be the least problem someone will have.

When I was at school, we used to call teachers Miss or sir. But I am advised that in many schools it became just first names after that - I'm not sure that's a good thing in a youngsters' school environment.

The point is PESEL will be issued automatically by Urzad Gminy/miasto after registering your permanent address, Which yours was or are you saying you had to fill an application for it?

No they do not issue it automatically. A person needs to go to the city building and show their rental contract and passport and blue card (or equivalent) and then the PESEL is posted to the registered address. There is no automatic PESEL issue here, I don't know about where you are. I repeat, no automatic PESEL issue here :)

(unless they recently changed procedures)

Definitely, and it's more affordable than many people think.

Well, I'm not asking for sympathy but that wouldn't be affordable for me, even if it is loose change for someone high-ranking at Credit Sewers. Those of us on local and unremarkable money cannot hope to afford it.

Tens of thousands of patients in Poland are without medical care after some doctors shut their surgeries in protest at new cancer treatment procedures...Hundreds of doctors refused to sign the new plan and have kept their surgeries closed since Jan. 1, mainly in northern and eastern Poland. They are getting growing support from doctors across the nation.

Yes, it's spread here, certainly seems to be a lot of closed surgeries, and there's now talk of a wider strike in the news media.

Law / PESEL for EU citizen working for a EU company (not Polish) in Poland [42]

I think you need to get the stay registration blue card from the Foreigners' Office (it certifies you as registered to stay) and then you go to the city council office with your flat's tenancy agreement or deed if you bought a flat plus your passport and the blue card, and they will issue you with a PESEL in a few weeks. They might also issue one on the strength of your employer's letter confirming employment, but I think when that's the case it's for your employer to get the PESEL for you.

One thing is for sure.This is not a time to be ill in Poland, unless you have MONEY and access to a private doctor or clinic.If you are unwell - go straight to Accident and Emergency....do not suffer in silence.

Although I acknowledge there are many dedicated medics caught in the middle of this mess, I must agree with you.

The headline in the local paper says 64 clinics closed. Let me tell you, dear reader, Wroclaw is not as big as you may think and 64 seems to be a very large proportion of them, so there seems to be nowhere to go in effect.

Although from Friday in Wroclaw does not work up to 64 GP practices, for now citizens of Wroclaw, do not listen to the appeal of the Minister of Health - they do not change massively physicians for other. Few people use the assistance of a hospital. But hospital doctors have already warned: it will be a problem with the issuing of prescriptions for refundable drugs. Without the medical records is difficult to risk, because after all NFZ will account us for it.

How are things in you area of Poland?

There is some dispute between the Poland government and physicians or clinics (I am not sure exactly) and as a result the surgeries (doctor's offices) near me are mostly closed and the 1 or 2 that are open aren't taking any patients and say "go to accident & emergency" and then just hang up, or simply don't answer the phone. One of the local surgeries has a sign outside saying "closed indefinitely". Phoning round the remaining doctors and open clinics, the response is "no appointments left" or "go to A & E".

That's if a person can get through, as the lines are engaged and it takes a lot of redialling to actually speak to someone.

I should think the queues/lines at A&E are on to the street.

Any comments on what this mess that's causing a lot of patient hardship is about exactly, and what the likely outcome or resolution might be (and when!).

Between cities in Poland or from Poland to Britain? Because it's closer to 2 hours or more if the latter depending on where in the UK or Poland you're flying between.

Can't you rent for 6 months and see if you all like it in PL longer term, before committing to The Big Return? I would, if I were you guys.

putting it through the office franking machine was probably a mistake.

Quite, one should always ensure the bird's head is at the other end of the envelope, i.e. the top left above the recipient address and also quickly switch off the power (or quickly press the 'Bird Consignment' button on later models) before the whole packet goes between the rollers and into the mail out sack. The problem is, it's all to easy to fall fowl of the regulations if a sender just wings it.
