Work / English teaching job offer in a medium Polish town. Is the salary sufficient? [30]

Ok. So he is given a contract to sign. There is an English version and a Polish version which he can't understand. He's happy with the English one so he signs it, as well as the Polish one, which he assumes means the same. Later it turns out that the Polish version is slightly different and they sack him, citing a clause in the Polish version which wasn't in the English version. Now what?

So saying all that, do you think Piotrkow Trybunalski might be for me?

As I advised before, you should ask for more money because they're taking the p1ss offering 2000. Other than that, if you're not that fussed about the legality of contracts or being messed about, go for it. Poland's a great country. It'll be a pleasant surprise for you after reading the stuff on other threads of this forum!

Life / Is it me or do people "seem" to live longer in Poland? Life expectancy among Poles. [52]

JonnyM. 9-5? More like 7.30 to 8.30, when commuters can't get a seat on packed buses because they are taken by 99 year olds who really MUST do all their shopping during the Monday rush hour.

Good point. In some countries the elderly can only get their travel concession after rush hour. How many times have you seen a working person stand up all the way so as to give their seat to some old one who could have waited half an hour?

Where I live the old ladies look older than their age but they're much more active than their blue-rinsed UK counterparts. My 86-year-old neighbour still tends her vegetable garden. Can't imagine someone that old doing the same in UK.

botoxed stripper. Nearly fell off my chair.

Feedback / I love this forum - It's so Polish: tolerant, inconsistent, amusing [184]

Nomad. For example, I wrote the word "monarchy" once or twice on serious British forums, bammm, it didn't take a day or two for them to ban..

Once or twice? Come come, Nomad, I bet you banged on about the monarchy ad nauseum just like you do here. I was a life-long republican before I started reading your stuff. Now there's a thought. Is Nomad a subtle monarchist agent-provocateur?

News / Polish final report on Smoleńsk aircrash [853]

Some would believe it was all the fault of the Russians whatever evidence were produced. It's a question of "I want this to be true; therefore it is true". Something to do with"faith" I suppose. The President's putting on the pressure wasn't the only factor, but it was a significant one.

UK, Ireland / Why Poles will never belong in England [283]

The funny thing is that this nasty little tick thinks he is superior because he was born in England. So was I and I am happy to come from one of the most mixed population groups in the world. I'd love some of these supremacist little-Englanders to have their genes tested. They'd find out how ethnically mixed they are.

Some of the other posters are just as bad. This ENGLISHMAN creature is not typical of the people of England, who are amazingly tolerant and good-humoured. Lyzko, you surpass yourself every day. You really don't want a list of great Britons, do you?

Since when has a guest been able to create a thread? That's just rolling out the red carpet for trolls. Weren't they welcome enough already?

UK, Ireland / Poles in the UK not a problem as far as i can tell [79]

JTY. When you say "we", who do you mean? The EDL? BNP? If you mean the English, it's presumptious of you to say the least to assume spokesmanship for all of us without mandate. You can get used to Britain as it is or resign yourself to bitterness and unhappiness for the rest of your life. I grew up in the 1960s and I remember when the UK was predominantly white Britons. Those days are gone, for better or worse. Get used to it.

UK, Ireland / Why Poles will never belong in England [283]

duckey!) LOL

What strange expressions you use. I won't make a list as I'd be here for hours. Google if you need reminding that Britain has been punching above its weight for a thousand years, and the lists of scientists, writers, engineers, explorers, artists, etc, etc, etc, all from a small island, are very long.

Love / Polish women USED TO BE much more attractive: [162]

Amathyst. Isnt all this a slight exaggeration - its been a while since I was in Poland (5 years) but saw no evidence of an abudance of fat kids or even chubby, they all looked healthy and normal.

I'm afraid not. The last five years have seen an enormous rise in obesity. Ten years ago a fat kid was an unusual sight in Poland; now they are everywhere.

Apart from the new abundance of processed foods available now, the kids simply have more money in their pockets. In the small (30,000 people) town near my village there four pizzerias, and their main patrons are young folk.

Work / Travel costs to Warszawa (Warsaw) for interview for foreigners [6]

as I don't live in PL I would have to travel more than 1600 km one way and spend a lot to sit interview in Warsaw I asked if they cover transport cost, the answer was negative.

Not just travel costs. Hotel too. It's just an agency, right? What if you don't get the job? As a callow youth I travelled from Edinburgh to Madrid on my own penny for an interview. Didn't get it; felt very silly.

Love / How do Polish guys feel about having an older girlfriend/wife? [30]

Canadian girl. Why worry what his family thinks? You can be making marriage plans before you've even met. Anyway, thinking about the long-term future when you're crazily in love is not a great idea. Take it easy. Enjoy yourselves.

Life / Moving to Poland - what is the most important thing I need to do, once I'm in Poland? [51]

Ok, so. if the job market isn't great. Would you say £20,000 is enough money to start a translating business, If of course my girlfriend passes the exam?

2000 quid would do it but how are you going to get work? You can register with established agencies and get jobs from them (you don't need to be a sworn translator), but they will ask your gf to do one or two sample translations EN-PL and PL-EN, and they would expect it to be good.

Get CELTA if you don't want to work for a mickey mouse outfit or, even worse, Callan. And brush up on your punctuation!

Life / Moving to Poland - what is the most important thing I need to do, once I'm in Poland? [51]

I take it your tongue was in your cheek when you wrote that, but in Poland the problem is in finding good translators. There are still too many around who got their stamp automatically on gaining their MA in, e.g. English Philology. I spend quite a lot of my time proofreading the work of Polish translators and I have to say I'm underwhelmed, sometimes shocked. The new system of courses and exams is a good start, but it should also apply to translators who had their stamp before the changes.

News / Multi-culti (in Poland) -- roadmap to disaster? [344]

That said, the biggest danger to blacks over here isn't "evil racist whitey", but other black men. Not that anyone will ever admit it publically, but that's political correctness for you - bury your head in the sand and it will go away. Except it doesn't ;)

Never heard of Operation Trident? It's a Metropolitan Police unit specifically dedicated to black-on-black gun and drug crime. Their actions were blamed for the recent riots, although this was bs.

News / Multi-culti (in Poland) -- roadmap to disaster? [344]

doesn't mean that anyone is willing to stand up and say to these black communities to "stop blaming whitey, it's your own people who are the biggest danger to you",

If you went to a black church or a community centre, you'd find exactly such sentiments being expressed. There are lots of decent, hard-working non-pink people; try not to tar them all with the same brush.

then how come there are so few shootings in former mining areas in the North - which are far worse off than a south London estate.

I've lived in both and I dispute what you say. Of course there are significant problems in some areas of London and other UK cities, and nobody is denying the fact that a lot of young people expect the world to be their oyster without contributing anything, but that goes for pink people, too.

You suggest you've been in London for a long time, so you must know all kinds of people of all colours.

Work / Graduate Certificate in TESOL - respected by potential employers in Poland? [17]

Do yourself a favour and buy some teaching theory books before you do the course. Any CELTA centre can tell you what you should read before the course. It's been 20 years since I did it, but I think they still recommend Jeremy Harmer's book, Practical Teaching, or something like that.

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

no,she was still alive in this pic.

Oh, that was sooooo nasty. Funny, though.

I can't speak for women in all the world, but compared with English girls, who are nothing but dogs. The Polish women beat them hands down in every way possible

Are you serious, or just seriously deranged?

News / Andrzej Lepper committed suicide [98]

But again without further evidence I'd say it's about a 50/50 chance.

It's so much more fun to deal in conspiracy theories. Ordinary people die in plane crashes, car crashes or kill themselves; famous people are always the victims of some dark force. Let's face it, if JK died of a heart attack in his bed tonight, this forum would be full of ominous stories of political assassination. btw if you don't have "further evidence", how can you assess it at 50/50?

News / Andrzej Lepper committed suicide [98]

There's also the possibility that it was yet another case of auto-erotic asphixiation gone wrong* (sorry for that mental image, really, I am).

Any evidence for that?

What conspiracy theory?

I'm sure you've heard plenty. I don't believe what govenments say for the reasons you state but I try not to invent alternative explanations just to fit my prejudices.

There's always the possibility that Lepper hanged himself, plain and simple, no?
