Life / Professional feminists' of Poland meet-up [631]

Shaming? Again, I only used your "logical" course. Doesn't work anymore? Exactly what I expected. And my argument is as real as yours. Bye.

Since the beginning of civilization, all important contributions to the advancement of society have been brought fourth my men, with little relevant exception. Statistically, the difference is gargantuan. You can take the liberal route, and blame it on the oppression of women through out the ages, or simply follow the most logical course.

Following your "logical course" it appears that Polish men are far stupider than American or German men, since very few of the "important contributions to the advancement of society have been brought fourth" by Polish men.

But I'm sure you will be able to find arguments in 3 minutes disputing your global intellectual inferiority, and I'm sure it's not going to be the level of testosterone.

History / Terrible past for the Jews in Poland? [930]

I think it's the industrialization of death that makes the Hitler regime so horrendous and it automatically disqualifes any positive narrative. I don't think anyone can deny the Jews the victims status in the WW2.

To that end I think the victim status is arguable before WWII, but I don't want to repeat what some posters already said (e.g. Gumishu).

Life / Don't Forget: Tomorrow, March 8 is Women's Day in Poland! [140]

And after all these years on the forum I still get so angry about the lies he spits out here. I should put him on ignore. Or he should move to "Toy Soldier" or something like that. He would be so much happier in a like-minded community.

It is "politically incorrect" to portray women the same way men are in advertising, it isn't even close.

Only in commercials that advertise mundane housekeeping products like washing powder, toilet cleaners, etc, women are presented as the ones who call the shots. After all they can't tell you "Hey, woman, you are stupid, now buy my crap". By the way, isn't it sad that in 2013 most cleaning products commercials are targeted at women?

If you look at car commercials it's a different story. It's quite uncommon to see a stupid man, but it's not unheard of to see a stupid woman, or a woman who is a gold digger.

I find this commercial particularly offensive even though it's quite funny.

Life / The "I am never wrong" phenom - is it the Polish thing? [63]

Anyway- is this a Polish thing? Making something that is your fault -somebody elses fault.

Funnily, I get the "I am never wrong" vibe from many Americans and British people. The typical English modesty / humility mentioned above is actually a perverse form of pride ;-p

Yes, it's a Polish thing and Magdalena just proved it.

Life / Poland - abandon all logic [25]

I like the way that at Warsaw station there are tramps who can beg in five languages but none of the ticket Sellers speak anything other than Polish.

Going with the flow requires certain amount of stupidity. For the ones with "Weltschmerz" life can be only bearable on the outskirts of the society.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

Evolution loses to chemistry and the unscrupulousness of the food industry.

I think the evolution hasn't figured out how to deal with abundance of food. For centuries our metabolism was optimizing itself to make best possible use of every single calorie. Now it needs to make a 180 degrees turn and be wasteful, and pronto. A hard nut to crack.

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

That's why Weight Watchers are so successful in the States. People just don't know how much food they should consume. Buying everything in enormous boxes and bags doesn't help; the huge portions in the restaurants aren't of any help either.

Also, what I find sick in the US is the snacking. At my work we have regular meetings one hour long or so. There is always an abundance of sugary snacks. You go to a parent-teacher meeting or whatever at school and they will have cheap, sweet food. They will offer cookies and ice cream after a church concert. The kids have class parties and birthdays where they get some sweet junk. It almost seems like people can't function if there is no sweet and greasy food in the close proximity.

Life / Polish Christmas Carols - your favorites? [20]

Very solemn, if sung by Mazowsze!

Yes, the Mazowsze rendition is beautiful. I went once to a concert of Mazowsze around Christmas time here in the US. They had a block of Christmas songs, and when they sang "Bog sie rodzi", I saw many people wiping off tears.

Language / "Hilarious" Mistakes? (Esp. Across Polish and other Slavic Languages) [83]

I speak Polish to my kids and I use a lot diminutives. My husband picks up this kind of Polish and then when he goes to polski sklep he uses the kiddie language, so his conversations with sklepowa, who is laughing all the time, are usually more or less like that:

H: Pani, chlebek, prosze.
S: Ktory chlebek?
H: Ten chlebek. I jeszcze kielbaska.
S: Ktora kielbaske podac?
H: Ta, kielbaska (pointing with the finger)
S: Ile tej kielbaski?
H: Troszeczke (showing the length)

and so on...

Love / Do Polish men make good husbands? [107]

American women tend to be more honest on the average.

And what observations led you to think that? Just curious.

History / What do Poles owe to Germans? [451]

When I was studying the DAAD (German Academic Exchange) was very generous when it came to sending us abroad and organizing integrating programs. I owe a lot of great experiences to that institution (and to the German taxpayers).

ENGLISHMAN

Poles can never be English.

What does it even mean to be English these days and why it's so special?

Life / Rich man, poor man - today`s Poland [80]

=pawian]You can teach a kid everything. But only those with a real talent will succeed.

It's been always a mystery to me, why so many Polish people are successful entrepreneurs in the States, and before they got there they were just regular employees. Is it the easiness of starting a business? Or just the pressure to do something or starving? Is it the culture of the new country, where people are willing to scarify more for money and are getting more for their money? Is it the weather? Are people are too depressed to be motivated?

Life / Rich man, poor man - today`s Poland [80]

In theory thats true but many dont have the right qualities to make money, many dont have the entrepreneurial flare, ability to take risks, or just plain old intelligence.

I'm wondering how far the wealth of a society has to do with the specifics of education. I remember in my school time, the thinking out of the box was not encouraged. Memorizing big amounts of information was a way to succeed. Now I look at the education system in America, and the kids learn how to invest in stock, they design their own businesses, etc. I'm wondering, in how far the entrpuneurship can be taught to the kids.

measure wealth on how much disposable income and savings you have.

I agree here. Buying a lot stuff doesn't create the wealth in the communities. Outsourcing housework and being able to have resources for entertainment does. If an average family has resources to buy prepared food, to hire cleaning staff, to go out for drinks and dinner, to spend a weekend in a hotel nearby, it crates jobs and wealth for the community. It's a self-fueling process. If you buy an Ipad the money goes to Steve Jobs and his investors and the rest to Taiwan, or wherever they put them together.

Feedback / I love this forum - It's so Polish: tolerant, inconsistent, amusing [260]

Let's give a credit where the credit is due. When I look away from the latest changes I still like the forum. I met a couple of great people here, it helped me to deal with the worst bouts of homesickness and it is fairly entertaining.

Love / Online matrimonial - a good way to find a true Polish man/woman on the net? [51]

everybody would be converting to islam or the mormon faith to have more than one wife.

Did they show the series "Big Love" in Poland? It was a very interesting insight into a modern day polygamist family.

FYI, only fundamentalists Mormons still have multiple wives. The Church of Latter Day Saints only allows one, and they are the church that is commonly understood as THE Mormon church.
