Genealogy / The surname "Turek" [11]

There is even an actor (rather well known) in Poland with a name Jerzy Turek. C'mon!!! We once bordered on Turkey, so what's strange about this name?

Travel / Fastest way to get from Warsaw Airport to Lodz central on Monday at noon. [42]

Trains to £ódź actually are quite fast these days.... after they renovated the tracks it takes about 1,5h to get there. There are no flights from warsaw to £, however. So, taxi from airport to PKP station will take about 10 min off traffic time or 25 in traffic. Then board the train (check PKP website in advance) and Bob's your uncle :-)

History / World War 1 - Poles on most fronts in Europe. Any good sites about it in English? [27]

Not as much.... the common knowledge from my time of schooling is that we shed blood for Germans, Russians and Austrians, unwillingly, and our country was ransacked and pillaged, and then all of the sudden with some aid from Pilsudski and other politicians we woke up independent :-). It's a simplification of course, but that's how it got remembered by me.

Life / Any treatment centres for homos in Poland? [455]

LOL, "the gay community has pressed the psychiatry associations so that homosexuality is not considered anymore a sexual deviation but a normal variation" ?

I haven't pressed anyone.... I am polish, gay and happy, not ill, distressed or diseased... not even depressed. :-) Moreover, I am healthy, rich and tolerant. There are more of us.... many more - some of you just don't know how many.

Oh, and... we mean no harm. Long live and prosper: straight or gay, who cares.

Yawn

:-)

UK, Ireland / Why English do not like Polish? [417]

Well.... anyhow. Last tim I visited the UK was in 2001 which was an overnight stay in Windsor. Way back before we joined UK..... Ok, then in 2004 I visited Heathrow on the way to US, again. So, I have no experience with the UK nfested by PL:-). But, soon I will visit there to shape my own opinion as to how the things go. Anyhow... my polish friends who live there do not logde many complaints! :-)

News / POLAND PAYS FOR BAD WASTE DISPOSAL [5]

Wild.... honey, didn't you set this thread up? But it's true.... I have been assiduously sorting my trash for the part 5 years until the management of the property announced it was all in wane... simply, those who take over our rubbish do not really distinguish between plastic, paper and other. Well.... it will take time, I guess. Sad.....

Language / What do you like in Polish language? [70]

I know this only as an English word "bazooka" (military usage). I don't think I have ever heard it used in Poland. But maybe locally it does have a meaning?

Best tourist attraction in town... Can't remember last time I had visited Krakowskie Przedm. so often before this happened. Let's have another facebook gathering to mock and cheer the fanatics!!! :-)

Nothing is wrong with IMF. And PL only has a stand-by line which has not been drawn, but gives us stability. Thank God we have qualified Belka in Central Bank now as opposed to ignorant unqualified predecessor.

Skrzypek??? An incapable banker, the laugh of business community? No need to talk about him anymore.... If you equate Tusk and Kommie then certainly Kaczynskis and their bunch are pure bred Nazis....

Travel / How much is a cab: Warsaw airport to the bus station? [27]

Some rules for you:

1. Do not ever discuss with guys inside the airport terminal who offer their taxi services. Ignore them and walk outside the building.
2. Wait in line outside, on the curb, for a licensed metered taxi (only 3 companies currently, I think, but they come quickly and frequently)
3. Give directions, ask for a receipt - in advance, by law they have to give it to you.
4. Rates vary, as others here had indicated, I have seen no higher than 2,80PLN/km. Typically 2,20 - 2,40.
5. Weekends, national holidays and night (after 10pm) rates are roughly 50% higher
6. Starting rate is usually 6PLN.

Good luck
