Life / Poles - the Nation of Liars? [478]

Poles don;t trust Poles, so how can they trust anyone else.

I pretty much agree with this statement.
I think calling Poland a nation of liars is far too radical but indeed i have noticed that lying may not be viewed as bad as anywhere else, however putting people who lie in front of their contradictions and doing it in Polish helps a lot.

As far as customer service is concerned ,the concept does not even exist in Poland among Polish businesses therefore a lot of foreign companies are successful thanks to a better service ( ikea, Carrefour, Castorama,Bouygues) at least in these stores you may bring back an item you bought and never used and get a refund quicker.

If transparency prevailed in any commercial transaction in Poland,(Polish businesses would have more clients ,customers more rights) and life would be easier for everyone.

Love / English Men vs Polish Men [207]

I'm moving on now. No girl would want to wait for a guy for 2 years.

You bet, longing and waiting 2 years for someone who just glanced at you and not even said hello ?

No offense but maybe he was just looking at you without anything else on his mind.

News / Will Poland be badly hit by Recession ? I don't think so. [70]

No way that Poland will take Greece position.

I just read that Whirlpool, Credit Agricole , Samsungand some other Asian multinational companies will open new branches or plants in Poland.

When was the last time any international company opened a susbidiary or invested in Greece?

Travel / What can Poland do to attract more tourists? Llamas farm? [71]

I think Poland should use the potential with nature and history to develop a better tourism. In my opinion there are some cities that worth to visit as Krakow or Gdansk between other where we can see old architecture and also places with a big historical background.

Absolutely, the Polish Tourism agency is not doing proper work in promoting Poland 's many jewel cities, natural sites, food etc.
Their marketing of Poland is poor and they should hire professionals for their media communication.

I am wondering if they even have a branch in Japan...

News / Will Poland be badly hit by Recession ? I don't think so. [70]

just reconsider what your 1-4 would be without the bazillions of euros Poland has received over the last few years from daddy European Union.

Ireland and other countries have received a lot too but the "return of the investment" (sorry for the expression) has been better in Poland because it is a market of 38 millions of consumers.

[quote=LwowskaKrakow]70 000 euros a year for a public librarian!

please provide the facts
Answer:

As for inflated salaries in Ireland there were so many articles about it : Here are some about the Public sector but the private sector also gave gigantic salaries before the big crash...

This is also what was happening in Ireland.

We should start a thread comparing Ireland and Poland since there may be some similarities.

However it is a public secret that Ireland the Celtic Tiger had a steady and good growth but lost its mind at some points with failing to issue regulations( Real Estate, banks lending etc) not to mention that Irish salaries 2 or 3 years ago were totally inflated : for instance a salary over 70 000 euros a year for a public librarian!

News / Will Poland be badly hit by Recession ? I don't think so. [70]

I hazard a quess and say cheap labour is one of the reasons..

Cheaper labour rather than cheap labour but it is not the only reason because Modlavia Romania Bulgaria have even cheaper labour costs.

High skills, high education, good will at work , very little strikes , flexible schedule etc make Poland a very safe place for international companies to outsource.

News / Will Poland be badly hit by Recession ? I don't think so. [70]

I think Poland will not have too much to worry about.

I agree .What'smore the Compsumption sector is far from beeing saturated in Poland and there are still a lot of businesses and home services which should appear in the future :Mexican restaurants, cleaning services companies, nannies companies to name a few .

Compared with Germany France Italy ,taxes in Poland are smaller , rentals are cheap, people have a bigger purchasing power* and they spend more which explains all those luxurious and gigantic shopping malls everywhere in the country, cafes, etc.

*For instance in Krakow a huge percentage of the population lives in subzidized flats or council houses in the district Nowa Huta but for a total population of about 800 000 people Krakow has at least 3 big shopping malls and thousands of shops.

Of course poverty still exists and some people are struggling too in parts of Poland which has no economic boom but all in all Poland will be ok.

News / Will Poland be badly hit by Recession ? I don't think so. [70]

As Europe and especially the Euro zone is heading towards Recession in the next couple of months ,i thought i might share my impression that Poland will not be hit as badly as the other countries in Europe.

Why?

1) Poland was the only European country to show economic growth in the past 4 years since the financial crisis in 2008
2) Every week we hear that new international Businesses are outsourcing in Poland or setting up a base ( for instance Samsung and LG are opening new plants soon)

3) Even if Poland does have some Public deficit it does not borrow on the markets as much as France, Italy ,Spain, etc
4) Poland is out of the Euro zone and thus will have more monetary freedom (devaluate or adapt the PLN)

Moody's might lower Poland 's rating if Tusk does not restrict public spending but not beeing able to borrow too much may be good to avoid getting huge debts passed on future Polish generations.

So all in all I bet that Poland will not be in such a catastrophic state as the others.

What do you think?

USA, Canada / Polish-American criminals [70]

Martha Stewart the famous Omnimedia founder and tycoon born Martha Kostyra (Polish parents) was convicted for financial fraud and served 5 months in Jail.
She is Polish American but never boasted about her Polish roots and never even actually promoted in anyway Polish recipes and Polish specialties.

Real Estate / Cost to build in Eastern Poland - Ideally per m2 [71]

Good question, the cost of this project over 6 years must be at least 20% more but since Teflcat and his wife built from scratch the psychological reward is enormous.

But apparently he does not want to do it again, even as a consultant !

My friend who built her house had the same experience of going back and forth all the time dealing with details: from her work to the house site, from her flat to the house site, adding more money for this and that, changing this and that, meeting plumbers painters electricians etc beeing asked to make decisions which were a headache, the whole thing was horribly time -and energy- consuming.

Life / Racism in Poland - the future [441]

doesn't mean the others don't exist.

Rozumiemnic I am not saying that Racists do not exist in Poland because you have idiots everywhere on earth but to always have Poland associated with Racism and Antisemitism is wrong.

There are millions of Poles outside Poland living and working all over the world in different cutures.Do we hear that the Polish Community in Chicago US is racist? No.

Do we hear that the Polish communities in Germany France UK Dubai etc are racist ?No.
Were or are those famous Poles: Ryszard Kapucinski, Kieslowski ,Zulawsk etc racist or antisemitic? No

Yet we keep hearing about Poland beeing xenophobic as if all the Poles were that way and the question of the first post speaks for itself: Racism in Poland-The Future.

So yes there are racists in Poland but they are not the majority and if it was forbidden in the Polish Constitution to publicly express racism in any form against any ethnic group or to express ethno centrism publicly it would eradicate the association: Poland equals Racism and Antisemitism.

Life / Racism in Poland - the future [441]

None of my Polish friends are racist antisemitic homophobic because they are well educated, love meeting other cultures and beyond all they are good human beeings.

As for the stereotype of Poles beeing anti semitic just read the magnificent novel from Daniel Mendelsohn called"the Lost"(Zagubieni. W poszukiwaniu sześciorga spośród) and remember that the majority of the Righteous among the Nations in Yad Vashem Memorial in Jerusalem were Poles.

I think that racism takes place when ignorance is fuelled by hard economic times and that we blame the others for everything bad happening to us, we look for the usual suspects the usual scapegoats. let's hope that History will not repeat itself.

Real Estate / Cost to build in Eastern Poland - Ideally per m2 [71]

Honestly Teflcat now after so many years of endeavours in builing your own house in Poland and eventually achievement and with your experience, i think you could offer your services as a consultant for Englisih speaking foreigners who want to build a proper house in Poland.

don't forget the polystyrene. My place is wrapped in 15cm all round. It's like a thermos flask.

You should consider it because i am sure you would get a lot of clients.

Real Estate / Cost to build in Eastern Poland - Ideally per m2 [71]

We got an architect to come and have a look and he said that it would cost as much to get it up to spec as building a new place.

Yes but it is less tiring and complicated to renovate an old house if it is in acceptable condition than to build a brand new house.

Also if the old house has a nice and typical Polish architecture you know like built in stone or a nice wooden house like those in Zakopane, it would be more interesting than a brand new one with an unremarkable architecture.

I remember beeing a bit shocked when traveling to Ireland and seeing all those "Villas" looking like Spanish Villas, instead of pretty Irish cottages.I thought it was ridiculous.

I mean it is true that for functional reasons it sounds more comfortable to live in a brand new house but I d rather keep in style with Polish architecture then if I were ever going to build a house in Poland or just look for an old one to renovate.

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

The Poles are not rude, on the contrary some men will kiss women ' s hand, offer to carry your heavy bags, people give their seats to pregnant women or to old people in trams etc, they are in general very gracious.

However Customer service is one of the worst in Europe, appalling, one can hardly exchange any item at a shop even with the invoice, one cannot get a refund for anything(One day at a hardware store in Galeria Kazimierz I bought among loads of other things an accessory which i discover I did not need and they made it extremely difficult to take it back even though it was still in the package and with the invoice! Same thing with a Polish friend who discovered that the dress she had bought did not fit, she went back with her invoice and the dress the following day and the shop keeper would not take it back!)

I have tons of examples like that the last one being at Aster in Krakow queuing for ages in the most messy organization in the world until some Polish clients started screaming at the incompetent staff who replied they were just employees and not responsible for the lack or organization at their headquarters!

So No the Poles are not rude andYestheir Customer Service is pathetic but they suffer from it too and are starting to rebel!

Life / Who are the Polish singers (Classical or Folk songs) [11]

I d love to listen to Polish singers whose styles are similar to :

Bob Dylan,Leonard Cohen, in English
Jacques Brel Georges Brassens,Barbara in French
Vladimir Vissotsky, Boulat Okoudjava in Russian

You know what i mean, classical or folk singers whose songs have nice lyrics, poetic Polish words, Polish singers who are viewed as singing poets.

Old or recent does not matter.

Thank you for your recommendations
