News / Poland is being robbed - Kukiz [37]

For me he is another Tyminski, too bad he cannot be deported to Canada. I yet have to hear his program. But for sure he eats into the PIS electorate, the same brainless, education-less Polonia crowd. And to testify to his hypocrisy - He performed for 76.000 PLN "in defence of democracy in Bemowo", arguably the most corrupt gmina in Warsaw (even PO and PIS agree on this) He could do it for free perhaps?

Law / Penalty points on driving licences in Poland [26]

To cut a long story short, you were driving way too fast and then tried to play the "dumb foreigner - I do not speak Polish" act.Too bad the new fine system is not in force yet for people like you.

Life / Health insurance in Poland - your suggestions please [35]

I pay my own ZUS health contributions (the amount varies every 3 months, presently it is 370 PLN per month).
Also have Medicover which covers at 360 PLN per month pretty much everything (all specialists and treatments, operations and staying their own hospital).
Damian is also included. For example when last year September I broke my arm in a bike accident, the rehabilitation was also included (20 sessions) but was done by Damian.

History / Terrible past for the Jews in Poland? [930]

Before you spread any more nonsense, perhaps you could come to Warsaw and visit the Jewish Museum. It would enlighten you.

Real Estate / Getin Noble Bank / Dombank - it is possible to cancel mortgage agreement in CHF? [41]

When you took that mortgage years ago, you realized and knew perfectly this was not a scam but a calculated risk. It was not a pyramid scheme. Currencies go up and down. If you would have taken a mortgage in PLN, that would have be at that time more expensive, but in the long run stable.

Greed is not a good adviser.

Travel / Cheapest Way from Warsaw to Chopin Airport ? [15]

Exactly. During the rush hour, especially on Fridays, the train would be the best option, because the bus also gets stuck in traffic jams.

Travel / Cheapest Way from Warsaw to Chopin Airport ? [15]

There is also (for them who live in the south of the city) bus 148 from Metro Imielin.
Anyway, here are all the connections together:
ztm.waw.pl/?c=571&l=2
I personally prefer the train - 175 can be pretty crowded and is notorious for pickpockets
Problem is that it uses two different train stations and two operators...confusing for foreigners arriving in the city.

Travel / Cheapest Way from Warsaw to Chopin Airport ? [15]

every few minutes at busy times).

ztm.waw.pl/rozklad_nowy.php?c=182&l=1&a=175&n=7002&o=02&k=B
175 goes every 15 minutes during the rush hour, and otherwise every 20 minutes or worse, not what I would call every few minutes.

News / Local elections - anyone care to comment? [75]

Care to inform us if you voted and if not...for which reason?

About PKW, this is a question of plain incompetence, nothing more. They were so stupid to install a new computer program six months before the elections. That's asking for guaranteed trouble.

News / Local elections - anyone care to comment? [75]

I don't think these local elections reflect the national mood. Actually they never do, because local issues dominate. Look at the number of big cities where the independent city presidents renewed their mandate. Also 17% for PSL....that does not reflect their votes in national elections.

Myself I voted here in Warsaw Bielany for a local party which focuses on local problems. For all other positions I voted Green, because I do think PO and HGW could do a much better job - look how they handle the reprivatisation (not to speak of the controversy her husband finds himself in regarding this matter), but also didn't want to vote for these PIS morons, so I decided just to be cross.

Results of the election. See who won seats in your area

PO loses in favor of PiS and local committees - in this way the elections to the district councils can be briefly summarized. But in any part of the Warsaw situation is slightly different. The balance of power in the districts of Warsaw will change. Until now only 18 districts in the three are not ruled by PO. Now the platform will certainly rule in eight, PiS certainly in the three (so far only had one). In the remaining seven the situation is not yet clear, the alliances shall be decided by the local committees.

warszawa.gazeta

If you see the results in Warsaw, it is clear that in quite a few districts local committees are getting a lot of votes, which I think is really great. They know the local issues and problems.

Language / Learning Polish but not focusing on the grammar, good idea? [37]

leave the grammar and focus on vocab

OK but this way your Polish will still be on a kindergarten level or years to come. I learned Polish through years of evening classes, took all the official exams and I am glad I did.

Language / Learning Polish but not focusing on the grammar, good idea? [37]

Grammar is a logical dissection of the rules of a language, which is something that you don't do while speaking. Our brain is a gigantic pattern matcher

The biggest collection of idiotic nonsense I have come across when learning a language. Get a life, learn the language the hard way - hours of boring grammar. Or end up with some expats I know who after living here for 10 years can just about order a beer in Polish.

Work / Are there any jobs for Americans in Poland? [46]

Try Capgemini, you're languages will get you a call center job

Exactly, the best option would be BPO or SSC jobs, for which Kraków is getting very popular.

Life / Volunteering in Poland [21]

Instead of writing senseless stuff like that and utterly unhelpful...
Maybe this one:
wolontariat.org.pl
They coordinate pretty much of wolontariat in Poland.

Life / What should I get for a gift for somebody who's never visited Poland? [59]

I wouldn't take chocolates to Switserland....it is a bit like taking chocolates to Belgium or ice to Greenland :)

not, repeat not, Ptasie Mleko)

I know Jon, they are cheap and most likely inflammable...but I am taking them to Belgium - somehow my parents like them(They could be excused because of their age :) )

On Podwale there used to be a nice linen shop, not exactly cheap but they had nice stuff.
Bołesłąwiec earthenware springs to mind as well as gift.

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

Merged: Which wódka to take from Poland back home?

We are going home to Belgium shortly for a long-awaited vacation. Question and dilemma...which wódka to take? In Belgian supermarkets you can buy Wyborowa and Żubrówka - be it at twice the going rate in Poland...So not these ones. I was thinking of Pan Tadeusz or Dębowy. Chopin is also nice....

For my mother I am taking as always Krupnik.
