Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

The word doesn't hold any power in Poland since Polish people in Poland did not own black slaves and call them that word. It is simply a term for a black person other than just calling them black. It's almost like saying Caucasians. That is another term for some white people, that is an alternative to the term 'white.' Nobody gets offended by it, and white people would call themselves Caucasians too.

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

This reminds me of a case I heard of where they wanted to take the word nigger out of Nigger Jim in Huckleberry Fin. They wanted to make a change in Mark Twain's book and have Slave Jim.

As for this case, it's silly to me. Looking at the thread topic, it seems that one football player brought this up 6 years ago. That is not enough. In the future is Poland is 50% black [hope that doesn't happen any time soon], then they can consider it, if it really does bother that many people.

Love / Turkish girl & Polish guy marriage. Will his parents ever accept me as a non Christian female? [42]

He does not go to the church but his parents go to the church.

.
It sounds like he is not particularly religious then, only his parents. This is probably the reason your parents accepted him and don't fear him converting you, because he is not a strict Christian. It anything, there is more chance of you converting him than him converting you.

It depends. If his parents are very strict Christians then it is unlikely they will ever be happy about it. They might accept you as their daughter in law [if you get married], but they would prefer he would marry a Christian girl.

Love / Best, safe Polish dating sites? [95]

Gettin 2 dates in a week wouldn't be difficult here, Polish girls are interested in foreign boys

No. They think they are interested in foreigners. Then they spend some time with them, and realize that the Italian stallion or English gentlemen are not all they were cracked up to be. Then when they see that they are not as loaded as they thought, that kills it completely.

Life / Halloween vs All Saints' Day in Poland [48]

Again a good point. These days it is difficult to find anything that is not commercialized or in some way exploited for money. Basically, the rule is, if it's popular, someone is going to want to try and make money of it. In fact as I write this I struggle to think of anything popular that has not been commercialized, unless it's some charity related stuff.

I think f stop is right, educating parents is the key, but look around, some of them are lost causes. Heck most of them are. These days parents have this notion that if you don't give a kid something they want, it's cruel. Then later in life, these kids turn in to adults, and become spoilt, thinking they should have anything they want to have. They also learn that life is all about owning material possessions.

Life / Halloween vs All Saints' Day in Poland [48]

I don't like any traditions/celebrations that either, were commercialized or where created to make money. I mean, I celebrate Christmas and Easter, but I don't like what they have turned in to.

I cannot stand this ideology they have created, for example with Christmas, where you feel subconsciously obliged to spend money on presents, and if you don't, then you feel guilty and cheap.

I actually find Halloween to just be a bit of fun, for kids. I don't ever like the term celebrate Halloween or Happy Halloween.

I do however feel, that it is wrong to advertise stuff at children. Most stuff, be it at Christmas, Easter, Halloween or whatever, is advertised at children, because they are easy targets, and silly parents, who don't want to disappoint their 'joys,' often buy them what they want, to make them 'happy' [even though it's fake happiness].

My question would be 'should there be some sort of boundaries put on advertising to children, or would you say it is a free capitalist market and therefore the responsibility of parents to prevent their kids watching certain stuff? The parent is not forced to buy anything, but children are easy targets, much like older people, for giving many to various charities that seem to appear out of nowhere and always visit them. Perhaps children should not be targeted below a certain age? I don't know, what do you think?

Life / Weird names Polish parents give to their kids [43]

Maybe to you they are but a parent can name their child whatever they want.

I remember Louis CK saying how wrong that is. You can call you kid anything. 'FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF, clean your room.'

Travel / Collection of dress codes in Poland - what to wear? [96]

Probably depends on the area. It could be that you were in an area where it would be considered less appropriate. If nobody was wearing anything like you, then I would assume that was the case. It actually surprises me that got stares in Warsaw. I have always seen it as a more liberal, mix and match type of moral-less area city, when compared with other Polish cities at least.

Life / What do Poles really think about cats? [416]

Perhaps but I know a lot of people did this before those regulations as well. Perhaps less in the city, but in the more country areas they would give them away to other people for free.

Life / What do Poles really think about cats? [416]

I think what was meant by 'unusually for a Polish person' was that in Poland, a lot of people tend not to be obsessed with cats. They do not clothe them or let them sleep in the same bed. Sometimes people can be a little over the top in Britain or the USA. It doesn't mean they don't like cats.

A good example would be this. In Britain, people are prepared to pay a lot of money, to buy a kitten. In Poland, people often given them away to neighbours or friends for free, because having a cat is just an extra cost. People in Poland don't seem as excited about kittens or cats. Just a general observation.

It actually worked. I honestly didn't think it would. Thank you Wroclaw. To think of all the stuff that I tried, and just turning it off for a few minutes did the trick. I turned it off for a few seconds before and it did nothing, but it seems it needs more time to re boot? Interesting.

UK, Ireland / Dekoder problems in UK? Cyfrowy Polsat. [12]

It won't make a difference. The problem is we have a flat screen TV pinned to the wall. It is really difficult to put anything in to the back. The guy put in a HDMI cable and a scart cable, the scart was used for the DVD player and the HDMI for the Polish box. Now suddenly the TV is not recognizing the box. We thought it might be due to the HDMI cable having a problem so we put the scart cable in to the Polish box and it didn't work [though it does work when it is in the DVD player]. I have not clue what is going on. It is unlikely anyone on the internet is going to solve the problem I know, but I am fed up with these Polsat people, we keep on having issues with them over and over. It's annoying to have to call them so much when you are paying for the service.

Anybody in UK or even Poland, the US or wherever, having problems with their satellite box [Cyfrowy Polsat to be precise]? Ours has just stopped working for absolutely no reason. The box works [the power] but the TV is not recognizing it and saying there is no signal and no device, but it worked fine in the morning. Everything is hooked up fine, the cables are fine too. Is it possible that the bad weather in Poland could be causing this [the weather here is ok]?

Language / Dupa - what a beautiful Polish word [103]

I remember during Germany v Poland in Euro 2008 when Piszczek overhit a cross [with Poland losing 2-0] and some fan who must have been sitting right by the camera just shouted out Dupa! It was so loud the camera just caught it beautifully. What a wonderful word.

News / The quality of Polish media coverage [50]

you have to sit through about half an hour of mind-numbing ads to get to it

I know exactly what you mean. To be honest though, Polish television has got it wrong. They have less ads but when they do appear, they take all day. Like, a movie might only have a couple of ad breaks but both last about 20 minutes, literally, no exaggeration. In the US the constant breaks are annoying but at least they only last about a minute or so, then you get back to watch you are watching. That method works better, as viewers know the program might be back on soon, so they stay. In Poland, once you hit an ad break, you could go make yourself some food, have a bath, do some cleaning, then when you get back, the ads are still on. Sometimes if I flick over to what seems like an interesting film and an add break hits after 5 minutes I just give up and turn over or turn off.

Yes I know what bias means? What are you getting at? It seems to me you are lacking a point to your post.

In the US it's all about the "hype" who killed whom, police brutality, etc. In other words, it hasta sell! If it doesn't, you're out!

I agree with you on this. I know it is not just in the US where the idea is 'it has to sell' or grab attention but in the US there does seem to be that extra care given to amplifying stuff, not just news but 'Reality TV'. sports events etc that just make them seem so obviously unreal or scripted. I sometimes get the feeling that in the US, almost everything on TV is scripted to make i more interesting and get a lot more viewers. Shockingly, even news. Turn on an American 24// news channel and you'll get bright colors, over the top presenters and facts [most of the time] told in such a way that make it seem interesting. Perhaps they think Americans generally have a short attention span. I remember I was once watching a political debate and the presenter would show lots of clips, ask questions and then give each participant about 20 seconds to speak before she butted in and started to spruce stuff up a bit. These people had not time to say anything, it almost made you wonder if there was any point in them being there.

So is Gazeta Wyborcza, Polityka, Newsweek(Lisweek), and so are all the TV stations: TVP(public), TVN, Polsat, Superstacja.

Oh I know most media is anti PiS and anti Church in Poland and there are only probably 1 or 2 papers and 1 TV station [that a lot of people do not have access to] that aren't. TVP info occasionally goes against the grain [the TVP news channel] but TVP1 and TVP2, the mainstream public ones that probably get more viewers, are similar to TVN and Polsat.

Without a reason?

Oh I suppose you are going to give the old 'PiS used media for their own gain so now the media has a right to constantly hound them for the past 5 years.' It's rare to see in countries that with the party in power doing so badly and screwing up so much, the mainstream media still concentrates such a large part of it's output on criticizing the opposition, who are not in power and therefore cannot do anything about it.

@Foreigner4

Sometimes I wonder if it is possibly not see what PO is doing with the media, how it shuts out any media that is against them, and has journalists who might be against them kicked out. Sometimes it's more subtle, sometime more obvious, but in general, people should be noticing it. There are a lot of protests against the attack on pluralism in the media but not enough and even when there are protests against this and against the mainstream media lying, the mainstream media reports them as just some minor gatherings that have little to no meaning. Oh the irony.

News / Polish final report on Smoleńsk aircrash [859]

Yeah not just America but in Britain, Poland too I would think. That is the paradox, on the one hand you got to respect soldiers for doing the job they do and being prepared to put their lives on the line if they have to, but on the other, some of them are most likely to be criminals who were no good at anything else, so they went in to the army, in the hope of decent pay and getting a lot of attention from hot women [who love a brave man in uniform], with the added hope that no wars break out that they have to fight in.

Merged: Why can't the Polish media just give us straight news?

Looking at a 'wprost' magazine front cover I noticed a number of stories. Sikorski was on the front with his wife Anne Applebaum, and the title was 'The first lady of diplomacy, can Anne Applebaum promote her husband to president? Also on the front cover was 'scandal in a Catholic school' and 'There is no mafia in Poland.' If this was a different paper, like Gazeta Polska then it would probably read 'Anne Applebaum, trying to force her husband in to the Polish White House.' The other titles would be 'Another attack on the Church,' and 'Leading officials trying to hide the existence of the mafia in Poland.'

What am I getting at?

Wprost is an anti PiS and anti Church oriented paper

Gazeta Polska is anti PO and pro Church.

Thanks to this we continue to get news that is skewed. We never get political news these days, it is always diluted in whatever way those giving it seem to lean. The only news we tend to get given straight is when we get a tragedy, like the recent shooting in the US.

I know I am stating the obvious here but seeing papers with such bias makes it almost unreadable, even if the paper says something you tend to agree with, you can still, if you're honest, tell that is is biased.

News / Let's protest censorship in Poland's mainstream media! [90]

He was fired for writing an article that was not factual, that contained numerous mistakes and one that did a great deal of harm to the newspaper that he worked for.

Not quite. It was more that he said that the substances were from explosives rather than could be from explosives. As he said in the video link I posted, he was fried for naming the substances that were supposedly not confirmed, but his sources actually had confirmed them. What is more surprising is how it got published. Surely the paper would read the article before and say 'no it can't be put up like that, it needs to be re-worded.' Or are the journalists so trusted that their work is not looked over or edited? It took other people to read it and go 'hey this is terrible, you can't put that in' for the paper to look over it and say 'whoops, sorry' and get rid of the journalist.

Merged: Cezary Gmyz explains himself on 'Bliżej'

This is yesterday evenings show [08/11/12] from TVP info with Cezary Gmyz as one of the people who was invited. I cannot remember whether there is a topic on his article in Rzeczpospolita about explosives found on the plane, that got him fired. I do remember it being discussed on this forum and if there is a thread on it somewhere then a mod can just add my post on to that thread.

PS Obviously this is for the Polish speaking on here who can understand it. If someone does not and wants me to give a summary of what was said [I won't go through it line for line though] then let me know.

News / Polish final report on Smoleńsk aircrash [859]

I long ago came to the conclusion that the Polish themselves haven't requested the return of the plane. It would cause too much trouble and open up too much division if it was in Poland. Can't you imagine the bitter fighting over the wreck if it was in Poland?

Actually he was explaining not too long ago that they did ask for the plane wreckage back but due to some rule, the Russians want to keep it with them [how convenient]. Why did they destroy it so quickly anyway? You know if they did have nothing to hide and it was not planned, why are they so foolish as to make it look like they have something to hide?

What use would killing a lame duck President be who was going to lose badly in the Presidential election?

And you speak of respect for the dead and their families, yet you use language like this even after his death.

Why do you insist on spreading pain for the families? There are certainly plenty of families who have publicly said that they wish that people would just shut up and stop spreading conspiracy theories.

There are more families who are unhappy with the way they were treated in Russia, the way they were treated by the Polish government and they want a more thorough investigation. This idea [that Tusk keeps repeating] that talking about it is upsetting the families is made up. Truth is most of them want to the matter to be discussed and do not believe that the issue is yet solved. It is important to them, considering how tragic it was, not to leave it and forget all the strange and unacceptable incidents that have happened since the crash, not to mention the crash itself.
