News / Black Haitians considering themselves as Poles [31]

I would say it is likely that some Poles remained in Haiti in that era but it wasn't significant and far from being under the most honorable of conditions:

The disastrous Haitian campaign

Combat casualties and tropical diseases, including the yellow fever, reduced the 5,280-strong Polish contingent to a few hundred survivors in the space of less than two years. Of the survivors, about 400 remained on the island, a few dozen were dispersed to the nearby islands or to the United States, and about 700 returned to France

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_Legions_(Napoleonic_period)#The_disastrous_Haitian_campaign

1804 Haiti Massacre

In Haiti there still is a popular myth that many Polish soldiers became sympathetic to the former slaves' cause and deserted the French, supporting Jean-Jacques Dessalines in significant numbers, with entire units changing sides. In fact, the actual desertion rate was much lower; nonetheless about 150 Polish soldiers joined the Haitian rebels.

Off-Topic / English teachers - 'functioning alcoholics with a superiority complex' [54]

My thread "English teachers' was merged with another 'the level of English of Polish teachers of English'. I'd rather it wasn't thank you. Two different subjects :-)

Oh, well, you haven't yet met the other British proles who lurk here on PF (they must still be nursing their daily hangovers).

Many of them left Blighty in a hurry and undisclosed circumstances. So they are currently squatting in Poland and teaching English as well because it is the only low-wage, dead-end job skill set they have. They are in survival mode and have no other talents that anybody in Poland would pay for except maybe driving a taxi. But all the signage is in Polish so that would never work for them as they would always be getting lost and risk getting beaten up by irate customers.

And they know that their Polish students won't realize the quality (and lack their of) of teaching they received until it is too late. These British teachers can always turn around and blame the students - that's of course if these Brits are still around and haven't hot footed it to another non-English speaking country.

In the interim you will discover soon enough that your fellow countrymen spend most of their time on here trying to convince others in vain that because they are hiding in Poland that in and of itself makes them Polish too.

History / Poland: Her heroes and her traitors [221]

Kościuszko was a man who lived to fight for and spread the ideals of universal freedoms. He wasn't merely an émigré to the United States; he also fought in the American War of Independence with the rank of general and expressed in his will to have the money in his estate used to emancipate and educate black slaves.

Considering the era in which he lived it is amazing the amount of countries he travelled to and fought for. Given his rich experiences and many past successes he must have regarded returning to live in a partially liberated Poland too much of a compromise to his principles. In the end it may have been simply a case of advancing age and declining health which took their toll and prevented him from finally returning to live out his last days in Poland.

USA, Canada / What do people in Poland think about American cars? [44]

He is only a teen(think 14 or 15 from his other posts).

Yes, the immature interests and naive understanding of other cultures makes 14 or 15 seem very likely. Bringing a car would be something for his parents to be concerned with if they were moving to Poland for work, etc. I suppose he can sit in the back seat of their car while one of them drives him around so he can look at Polish girls walking down the street.

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

I can't speak to the quality or authenticity of this brand but I read that it had a rather disastrous advertising campaign in the States last year:

gothamist.com/tags/wodkavodka
They use the Polish spelling Wódka as the brand name itself but unfortunately the offensive ads will only give a false and negative association.

Law / Old Polish money banknotes - what's their value today? [415]

I don't know if this has been mentioned already but there is a lot of old Polish currency from every era being sold on eBay. This should give you a good general idea of the current value for particular notes and coins. Some obviously believe there is a market out there to buy and sell these.

You may also want to contact the Polish Numismatic Society here: ptn.pl/indexe.html

They also have many links to associated organizations inside and outside of Poland here: ptn.pl/htm/linki.htm

Currency from Poland's communist period is unlikely to be popular today but in another decade or so some collectors may become more interested due to increasing scarcity or simply the artistic work reflective of the time.

Language / Polish language would look better written in Cyrillic Script? [212]

Polish already has several unique characters in its alphabet which along with other consonant clustering make it instantly recognizable as being Polish. It is beautiful as it is and this would be lost if Cyrillic was used instead.

But no worry, there would never ever be any public support to change it.

History / What do Poles owe to Jews? [586]

One ethno-religious chauvinist claimed early on in this thread without any supporting evidence:

What the Poles took from us, us being "The Jews", they could never repay.

But it didn't take long for this rather neurotic position to be undermined by one of his fellow ethno-religious chauvinists in a subsequent post when replying to someone else:

Really? So in your mind the actions of the nation of Poland between 1945 and 1989 were supported by all Poles and thus all Poles are to blame for said actions. Sorry but even you must be able to see the stupidity of that particular position.

Love / My Polish bf cheated on me with a black girl [45]

well it depends on how you understood what i have said..

I think your original post is pretty clear. It's not simply that your Polish boyfriend cheated on you with another girl but that it was with a black girl in particular. I just don't believe you would have given any emphasis to the other girl's race if she hadn't been black.

You mention the word "black" four times including in the title of your post. That is the real issue for you. You know this. It is understandable that it would be uncomfortable for you to admit it since you added qualifying statements in your posting. Of course no one wants to be regarded as a racist. I'm sure you and many others genuinely believe that interracial couples can't have misgivings or indeed prejudices towards different racial groups outside of their relationship.

Although there is a lot of diversity in the Americas, Europe and Australia the same cannot be said of Africa, Asia and the Middle East where most countries are predominately homogenous. Although Western societies have a longer history of having larger diverse populations all of them still display reservations about how far they will interact or enter into a relationship with other people from a different race. Actions always speak louder than words.

The issue isn't about whether or not Polish guys in general have a thing for black girls. That fact that you have a Polish guy now that you say is your boyfriend proves they are more interested in other aspects of a relationship beyond the color of skin.

Your boyfriend just seems to have found something more interesting in another girl which he doesn't see in you. Rather than it being a matter of race it sounds like it has more to do with your individual personalities and commonalities which are lacking. There is a lot you haven't brought up. Maybe you are a homebody and he likes to be more social or there are other controlling aspects of the relationship beyond sex which is causing unspoken tensions and a need to find an outlet.

If you can't talk with him about it then you should just end the relationship in as friendly manner as possible.

Well, most people don't regard themselves as being a racist; certainly not like the skinhead or KKK variety.

But how differently would you have worded this post if your boyfriend had an affair with a girl who wasn't black?

Language / -ski/-ska, -scy/ski, -wicz - Polish surnames help [185]

What is Polish szlachta? My surname is Legierski. What part of Poland does this come from? I have searced online and have found a few around Istebna & Koniakow.

Szlachta is the name for the privileged social class which existed for a time in Poland (and Lithuania) until it was formally abolished in the 1920s and never restored.

It's not clear from your post if you believe Legierski was a part of this higher strata of Polish society in much older times. There is a list of szlachta here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_szlachta but the surname Legierski does not appear among the several hundred names shown. If Legierski ever had been szlachta it would have no recognition or significance in Poland today anyway. It's just another name in a phone directory.

But there is a notable person by the name of Krystian Legierski who lives in Poland. He is Afro-Polish, a member of Poland's Green Party, and an activist in Poland's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community. His wikipedia profile does mention he was born in Koniakow which is one of the villages you identified as being the origins of the Legierski name in your own research.

I found another website and email address for him here: zieloni2004.pl/Krystian-Legierski-63profil.htm However, I don't know if this contact information for him is current or if his knowledge of languages other than Polish is any good. Since he is busy in politics and social issues he may not be interested in corresponding with people - especially foreigners - regarding genealogy.

Life / Racism in Poland - the future [441]

I thought the British - be they white, black or asian - were all too busy rioting and looting in the UK to start hunting down and attacking Poles.

You should write to the Nigerian-born Polish parliamentarian John Godson. Ask him if he agrees with your call for Poles to be mistreated when they are abroad. Or ask any one of the 40,000 Vietnamese who now call Poland home.

By the way, do you believe non-white Poles like the ones I just mentioned should also be mistreated if they visit the UK?

I stand irritated, not corrected. You have zero freight, in making a single conclusion concerning me or my motivations for making a post. You don't GET to tell me why I do things, or what I REALLY mean.

I gave you every opportunity to explain yourself to me. I even gave you specific questions to answer about the article which you elected to bring to everyone's attention.

Instead, you just evaded it all. I find this odd considering the nature of the topic. Why wouldn't you want to clarify your position?

Anyway, I'll refer you to peterweg's post and remind you that you don't have to agree with my comments or conclusions about you. But I will still make them.

I don't have to convince you of jack, Jack. I don't do "underhanded". I posted it for the very reason I said I did. I love my Polish wife, and I love her country. You're outta line.

You said you posted it because it caught your eye. This is a meaningless explanation therefore others will be left to conclude you posted the questionable article for incitement.

Stating that you made a personal lifestyle choice to be married is not relevant; it's only an attempt to change the subject. I can't imagine you could say you didn't love your wife or her home country if she is there standing over your shoulder.

I'm not out of line. You just stand corrected.

Racism exists everywhere, the question is, do we have to be.I think not

I agree but unfortunately every society is still afflicted by it. I think it is ultimately an instinctive survival mechanism which has lasted into modern civilization. Thankfully many countries have laws and other political pressures in place to try to prevent and respond when racist incidents do occur. Education is key as well to eliminate misunderstandings which are often the trigger. That's why when it comes to this topic the linking of articles which are clearly exaggerations, posts which demonize only one side, and other forms of fear mongering don't help to achieve the interracial harmony which everyone should agree is needed around the world.

So rather than anyone coming out of the blue and making a blanket claim that Polish society is racist it would be far more instructive and beneficial if they gave actual examples of what they are talking about and then demonstrate how their own community dealt with resolving the same problem. Otherwise it will only result in having to point out that the accuser has no room to talk.

Life / Racism in Poland - the future [441]

Hey, buddy. I posted a headline that caught my eye. Where do you detect this "glee"? Take it down a notch, will ya.

Oh really? So you merely noticed a simple headline out there that you wished to share with everyone. How nice.

Nope, you're not convincing.

You threw this molotov cocktail of a story by starting your own thread just so it could get more attention before it got merged.

But did you provide any sort of context? Of course not. No fun in that now is there? You just laid the story out there as if it were an unquestionable fact.

Don't you find it even remotely suspect that some elderly family members of the players reportedly won't be attending the games over supposed concerns of being victims of racism yet they aren't stopping their very own children from going and playing there? If Poland and Ukraine are such hotbeds for racism then shouldn't the games have been boycotted a long time ago by all these other utopian countries in Europe and elsewhere?

You need to wake up and realize that Amnesty International has been criticized themselves by other entities for biased reporting and besides they are not an arbiter in this world for anything. The British media pouring scorn over Poland is nothing new but then again this is the same British media that is currently under fire for unethical journalism such as telephone hacking.

The Euro 2012 games will go forward whether you or others like it or not. Poland and Ukraine have invested millions to accommodate people they know will be arriving from all over the world. Both players and fans are looking to have an enjoyable time.

If there happens to be any criminal activity, which can occur anytime people congregate, then it is a matter for the local police. Although the likes of you will assume (and hope) that it will be only Poles committing crimes this will not pan out. The overwhelming majority of Poles are tolerant, law abiding citizens. Like any society there will always be a minority who will cause trouble for any given reason.

Furthermore, there is a very good chance these games can be marred, not by Poles or Ukrainians, but by a contingent of foreigners coming in who will be hellbent on causing problems with locals and each other. You obviously don't know that some European countries have had their own police and diplomats intervene in the past to prevent their own citizens from traveling to football matches abroad because they are known for starting violence or other criminal activity.

So I won't be taking anything down a notch. You failed in your underhanded attempt to smear all of Polish society. The reality is racism, bigotry, prejudice, discrimination - you name it - can be found in every single society all across the planet.

The distortion lies in the level of reporting with countries like Poland being blamed wholesale for the problems caused by a tiny minority while other basket case countries such as Israel - where violent racism and theocratic bigotry are institutionalized, publicly funded, and politically endorsed - hardly ever get a mention if at all in the press.

Amnesty International Issues Warning: Racism in Poland "A Concern".

Well, since you take such glee in portraying Poland as a hopelessly racist and bigoted society then you will have to agree that the only way for Poles to redeem themselves is to start following Israel's shining example of multicultural social harmony and begin treating all non-Poles in the same fashion as Israelis treat indigenous Palestinians.

You should lobby Polish politicians to meet with their Israeli counterparts to discuss this issue. That is of course if Knesset members aren't too busy addressing the matter of non-Europeans being in Israel.

Here's a recent example from just this past week of what I'm talking about:

Anti-immigration protest turns violent in Tel AvivSource:
edition.cnn.com/2012/05/24/world/meast/israel-immigration-protest/index.html?eref=ft

"A racially charged demonstration against the Israeli government's handling of immigration from Africa turned violent Wednesday night as protesters attacked foreign workers, shattered car windows and vandalized a shop owned by a Sudanese migrant. The demonstrators carried signs with the slogans "Infiltrators get out of our houses" and "Tel Aviv -- a refugee camp."

They were accompanied by three members of the Knesset, Israel's parliament. Miri Regev, a Knesset member from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, referred to African immigrants as "a cancer in our society" and promised to do anything possible to send them back to their home countries."

Here is for example a fascinating Tatra's Timeline

Thanks for adding the details about inhabitation of the Tatra's throughout history. It was very interesting and showed an amount of diverse influences which are even more than I had imagined. If the Tatra's alone had such a complex history then there is no doubt that other parts of Poland underwent no less of an intricate development as well.

History / Origins of Polish Slavs [138]

These physical appearances you mention may just be more noticeable to outsiders but they are not universal to the Polish population. The tempestuous runway model Naomi Campbell has many of these facial features too but neither she nor anyone in the world would conclude that this makes her Polish.

Often times advertisers and other media outlets find people with very exaggerated physical traits to present an ideal which is often quite removed from reality.

Like most nations in Europe Poland was settled by successive waves of migrating groups. Some died out, some simply moved on, some remained and were assimilated. We may never know the complete picture of who all these groups were. But as I stated earlier Poland established its identity and national consciousness as it grew in place along with periods of considerable stability as well as upheaval.

Poland and the Poles cannot be seen as developing in isolation though. Germany, Sweden, Lithuania, Russia, France, Belarus, Ukraine, Austria, Hungary and others all played a role in shaping Poland and the Poles including settlement in each others country and offspring from interethnic marriages.

Even if one argues that Poles appear to be a homogenous society then even a casual look at the wide variation of folk style of clothing, traditional music and cuisine among the different regions of Poland show that Poles have actually been quite heterogeneous over its history. These variations may be due to different groups which passed through or settled in Polish lands over the centuries but are now forgotten in time or it can be attributed to neighboring influences which became pronounced in bordering areas of Poland but not other parts.

The factors that united Poles into a more common identity and eventual nationhood were the standardization and teaching of the Polish language, the role of religion, development of widespread communication and other infrastructure, and the rule of law, rights and trade. Of course, external threats always reinforce the need to emphasize shared values, beliefs and characteristics.

Exactly; they were attacked by hooligans not the whole of Polish society. Ask yourself, if Poland were so racist then how did these black players even get in the country let alone be signed up to play on a local sports team? Why do ordinary Poles turn up to watch them play?

Genealogy / Is your line of the Polish family noble? [74]

Associations with royalty doesn't mean a person actually came from a noble family. For example, no one with the surname King would ever be mistaken for having had an ancestor who was a king of a country. Rather it is indicative that someone had an ancestor who worked in some capacity, like a common servant, for a king. Also, the British soap opera actress Barbara Windsor (a stage name) could never claim to be a member of the Windsor royal family who rule the United Kingdom and whose own ancestral family name is Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

And just like freed slaves in the Americas adopted "slave names" from their owners it is likely that surnames with supposedly noble origins were merely adopted by freed serfs in Europe in previous centuries. That and other societal reforms over the generations meant that anyone could pretty much adopt any name they wanted to.

Real aristocrats and royalty are very much aware of who is one of them and who isn't. If you are in doubt then just compare you own current station in life compared to theirs.

Besides, countries like Poland, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine are republics now so there is zero chance of having any titles, lands or privileges recognized there no matter who you are.

History / Origins of Polish Slavs [138]

Poland has a long and complex history going back centuries. I'm sure there are websites you can search or books you can order that go in great detail about this. One thought is that when humans left Africa they moved through the Middle East and then Central Asia before turning back towards Europe and this would in part explain the term Indo-European such as when some similarities are found among very different language groups.

However, it is very unlikely that you will find a consensus that Polish Slavs can be traced to just one group migrating en masse from one part of the world and settling in isolation in the often changing historical borders of Poland around them.

Poland's development of a national consciousness with unique culture and language is no different than how many other countries develop; i.e., it happens over a very long period of time, in situ, with many external influencing playing their part.

Just look at how the English, French, Italians and Americans developed their own identities from very different origins and often with a lot of turbulent periods in their histories. This process roughly repeats itself all around the world.

Perhaps one day there will be a large enough DNA database to show a better pattern of human migration but by then it may show only tenuous links.

Life / Scars of Communism on Polish culture. [55]

Communism created forever in the Polish culture and people a culture of distrust and suspicion, -- particularly of foreigners, and foreign ideas.

That's quite a ludicrous claim coming from a

Scots Irish American

who conveniently failed to mention the absolute hysteria in America created by that other Scots Irish American Joe McCarthy.

Surely you know him and his bizarre show trials of dozens of innocent American citizens during the 1940's and 1950's which falsely claimed they were communists and that more communists were hiding under every bed and in every closet right across America. Where do you think the term McCarthyism came from? It's not a compliment I can assure you of that. Thankfully that crackpot was finally discredited and thrown out of political office. He died in penury at the age of 48 from alcoholism. He was and still is a complete disgrace in American history.

You also didn't mention in your anti-Polish rant how America's phobic mindset from the Cold War era past still lives on. It occurs in the often told lies promoted by rightwing fanatics about how that other Scots Irish American Ronald Reagan somehow single-handedly defeated communism while completely ignoring the struggles, sacrifices and genuine bravery of the citizens in countries like Poland who were the ones that actually made the changes to ended communism. And it continues today with those other fascist blowhard talking head TV and radio personalities of Scots Irish American descent such as Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity who wildly denounce people as Marxists and Socialists - from their elected president Barack Obama on down - when anyone dares to disagree with their own rabid, rightwing, extremist views. These evil clowns are popular not because of their brains but only due to the ignorance and bigotry which they advertise through their big foul mouths. And their never-ending asinine rhetoric has made compromise in America a toxic word and progress to benefit all American citizens impossible.

You laughably claim that Poland has scars from communism yet it is plain to see that America neurotically rips open its own wounds from that era every chance it gets.

You talk about Poland and its people forever having distrust and suspicion especially of foreigners and foreign ideas. Do you really think people in other countries don't know about your citizenry organizing in armed gangs under revolutionary titles like Minutemen while they patrol your borders even though your government has its own agency to do this? Do you also think other people don't know how your government has been forced to spend billions of dollars on walls, fences and surveillance along your borders because of the xenophobia that has gripped America? People claim they don't want illegal immigration but it is undeniable that illegal immigrants come from all countries so America's sole focus on darker skinned people coming from Central and South America while ignoring other migrants proves the xenophobia is also racist. And when has America ever been authentically open to foreign ideas when from its government right down to the guy on the street the common attitude is "my way or the highway"?

In schools, stores, malls, clubs, churches, and private businesses across the country -- they close and lock most of the doors, but one or maybe two.

And which similar establishments in America don't have and use locks on their doors and windows or even have alarms and video surveillance? In cities across America, especially the capital city Washington DC, there are many shops that have bulletproof partitions between the cashiers and merchandise on one side and the customers on the other because they have been robbed dozens of times. It's quite the sight to see in 21st century, freedom loving, open minded America! And everyone knows now that the "neighborhood watch" patrols in American towns and cities are made up of rogue citizens carrying guns who are very willing and eager to pull the trigger rather than alert the police to potential criminal activity like they are supposed to do.

While many Polish people see horrific problems in government and society -- they aren't able to brainstorm together to combine their ideas to solve even the simplest challenges. Brainstorming isn't understood or practiced effectively here.

America's infrastructure has been crumbling for decades. Poverty has been a mainstay and is actually increasing in America as jobs in all sectors are forever lost and wages stagnate for those lucky enough to still hold on to a job. I guess this explains why you are in "communist scarred" Poland now and not your "free market epicenter" homeland America.

Additionally, US politicians and US banks completely wrecked America's economy years ago and it is still recovering today. American workers and their families got hit the hardest yet no one has been held to account for disaster cause by greed and incompetence at the highest levels. Some American citizens tried to organize to draw attention to the injustices occurring such as Occupy Wall Street. The result? The politicians made it increasing difficult for protestors to organize. In several incidents across America local police viciously attacked peaceful demonstrators with dogs, rubber bullets and tear gas and rather than cause outrage most of their fellow Americans sitting at home were cheering the police brutality as they watched it unfold on their TVs. So much for living in the land of the free where right to assembly is supposed to be guaranteed in the constitution.

Communism was a system of control and Poland has many of these ludicrous mechanisms of control that are widespread across the country.

And yet America has the highest incarceration rate in the entire world (yes, even when compared to communist countries like China, North Korea and Cuba) and it is still in the top league not only for sentencing people with the death penalty but for carrying it out.

Americans often claim they are taxed to death and this is on top of having legislation and lawsuits regarding nearly every aspect of life.

You have absolutely no room to be criticizing Poland or the Poles about anything. You need to go back to America and clean up your own mess there.

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [656]

There is no common look. Poland's borders have shifted many times over the centuries.

Poland has also been welcoming of different groups of people too; here is an interesting link about it: commonwealth.pl
