AND great free pre-natal and post-natal care!
I still remember as if it were yesterday, how surprised I was when a nurse arrived at my wife's door 2 days after deleivering our baby.
She came to see if both baby and mommy were fine; to scope out the surroundings and to instruct everyone on newborn baby care.
This American was very impressed.

this type of behavior is in no way endemic to Poles and Polish culture.
I know, it can be intense when you're inundated; submerged in and around Poles. I've been there and they can behave in an incredulous manner but I'm here to tell you all that there are other cultures, in my experience, which find it hard to acknowledge mistakes and to simply verbalize an apology.
In my case, the Indians and Greeks come to mind............................Poles, for sure, can be extremely annoying in this regard but they are not the sole purveyors of obstinance :)

The only place with a neon sign was a small private restaurant on Skłodowska by Plac Grunwaldski.
Maybe also the Dworzec Główny.
Polish streets used to be full of neon reklama too

During my seven years I had only one bad experience with a Pole who "hated" me for being an American. But that's stuff for an entirely nw thread.
So, watching those American movies did not contaminate our innocence, or worse.

Maybe not your friends but my fellow-Polish students and our instructors were the ones, who brought it to our attention in the first place! I honestly didn't make the connection on my own. I'm not that smart.

I never said Poles were idiots (but I am sensitive :)
Boletus, I never said the audience, the average Pole, felt that way. I know they didn't.
None of my friends ever though about them as anti-American propaganda movies

my point is American films dealing with the seedier/violent/deviant side of life got an inordinate amount of play at the expense of works casting a more positive, favorable light on American life.

Violent gansters/crime films were common fare in Wrocław theaters: Serpico, The Godfather, Serpico
"drugs in America" - French Connection
"sexual promiscuity" -Looking for Mr Goodbar
"divorce and the breakup of families" - Kramer przeciw Kramerowi...................

His tactic once used to drive me up the wall as well, but once I got to know it, I'm having fun instead.
