News / Piotr Kraśko - road to perdition [9]

Piotr Kraśko - a face of the TVN Fakty news - not only, as recently transpired, didn't pay taxes between 2012 and 2015 (and had to pay up above 800 000 PLN when it was discovered in 2017) but also faces trial for driving without a licence for at least last 6 years - a true representative of the Polish elite that PiS hates so much (fortunately not full Piotr Najsztub style - Najsztub = another anchor of Polish 'dziennikarstwo zaangażowane')

News / Lech Walesa urged to "reduce Russia" to 50 million people [366]

At some point Kaliningrad belonged to Poland,

first of all, not so long ago Kaliningrad was German (there are perhaps people still alive who remember it as a German city) - why don't you Russians give an example to the world and give Kaliningrad back to Germany

Genealogy / Abbreviations used in Polish gravestone inscriptions [63]

Regarding these surnames the Zemplinska might be Polish (or Zemplińska)

Zemplin is the easternmost part of Slovakia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zempl%C3%ADn_(region) - the languge in these parts reminds Polish and Lemko

Feedback / Is it Polish forum or foreign forum? [159]

Or maybe Russian sovoks

most of the Polish populace were serfs as well in the ages long gone, so I don't really understand your point

Sarmatian = Polish

Serboi and Khrobatoi were Sarmatian tribes according to Greek (Byzanitne) historians - they were probably allied to Slavs and settled in Eastern Europe along with them - White Croats settled north of Carpathian mountains in what is now Poland and Ukraine - the thing is that Sarmatians originated in the Eurasian steppes and not in the Balkans

Life / Polish Nursery Rhymes [253]

it's the right rhyme - but the first word in what you remember is probably 'chodzi' ('chodzi ptaszek po ulicy' means 'a bird is walking along a/the street')

Classifieds / Looking for property to rent or accommodation in Gdansk [10]

I cannot find a legal representation while

that's a simple consequence of you not knowing Polish - Polish lawyers that speak English are probably in greater demand elsewhere -

dudkowiak.com/local-services/law-firm-gdansk-lawyer-gdansk/ - here's a lawyer company that uses English (from Gdańsk) that I found thanks to uncle google

History / What do Poles owe to Hungarians? [233]

Other countries felt the same, even countries like Poland that had been sceptical of Moscow still bought gas from Russia.

Poland bought gas from Russia after 2015 because it was bound by a long term take-or-pay contract that was signed during the PO/PSL government that expires later this year

- the current government did a lot of to wean off of Russian gas: it's building a gas pipeline from Denmark to Poland which is supposed to pump gas this autumn, it finished the LNG terminal in Świnoujście and plans another one in Gdańsk area

History / What do Poles owe to Hungarians? [233]

Now the Hungarian gov't. is being faced with a choice; support Putin or Ukraine.

they don't have to choose at all: Germany is leading the resistence to sanctions against Russia - so Hungary is fine and dandy

Life / The Pole, as an example of a perfect Russophobe, in a spherical vacuum [42]

@Cojestdocholery

there is a Polish joke about Russians: juhas (a junior shepherd in the Tatras) calls at baca's and says: "Baca, have you heard: Russians went to space". Baca asks: "All of them?" "No, just one" "To co mi dupę zawracacie" says baca.

Genealogy / What does my Polish name mean? [401]

Maciej I think is Mark, Masteus is Matthew

both Maciej and Mateusz are forms of Mathew which arrived in Poland through different routes and at different times

Polonia / Sending a parcel from Sweden to Poland [3]

there are no import taxes on goods within the EU - you shouldn't worry about it - I can't recommend you a shipping company because I'm not in the know

although my not very educated guess is that international parcel companies like UPS, TNT and DHL work both in Sweden and Poland a can arrange a shipment and delivery

Life / Healthcare Cover in Poland - accessing Spanish healthcare through ZUS? [5]

Does anyone know if we will be able to access Spanish healthcare using ZUS

Polish citizens holding a European health card (which is issued on demand with no further conditions) can access healthcare in other EU countries (as far as I know) just like those countries' citizens

your situation though looks more complicated and I am pedestrian in these matters (I only know about Poles being able to access healthcare in say Germany thanks to the special card because my mom used to work in Germany and obtained the card just in case)

however, if this may indicate anything, my dad who was working in Holland and was only insured there (was not paying ZUS in Poland) was admitted to a hospital in Poland with just his EU health card (or whatever it is formally called)

Edit: just checked it: the card is called "Europejska karta ubezpieczenia zdrowotnego" (European health insurance card)

Genealogy / Is your line of the Polish family noble? [74]

Please, can someone tell me how to access birth, marriage, baptismal records in Poland

as far as I know there are no central registers of births, marriages etc before the second world war - you would need to hire someone to search for the records you are interested in in local parishes where your ancestors were born (most of these have survived the war(s) - at least since the beginnining of the 19th century)

History / POLISH AND RUSSIAN FRIENDSHIP WILL LAST FOREVER [513]

@Vlad1234

there is a Polish joke - a 'juhas' (shepherd) calls at the baca's (baca is a chief of local shepherds) and shouts: Baco, słyszeliście, Ruskie w kosmos polecieli. (Baca, have you heard: Russians flew to space). Baca asks: Wszystkie? (All of them?). Juhas: Nie, jeden. (No. Only one) Baca: To co mi dupę zawracacie. (So what's the fuss.)

@gumishu

well, if you fail to contact Polish volunteer organizations you can try international institutions like this: unhcr.org/news/briefing/2022/3/621deda74/unhcr-mobilizing-aid-forcibly-displaced-ukraine-neighbouring-countries.html
