News / Future of Polish-Ukrainian relations [669]

if one of our neighbours blocked our export.

Poland is not blocking Ukrainian exports - the government is more than happy to provide transit for Ukrainian produce if it is not sold in Poland

News / Referendum to decide about exotic immigrants in Poland [559]

I doubt PIS will prosecute their own men.

this article in Polish is especially for pawian (it's from okopress but pawian probably doesn't even know what okopress stands for) -

Life / Why is women-hatred and stereotyping so popular in Poland? [181]

Men are not allowed to compete with women in chess.

I read about Judith Polgar (a Hungarian female chess player) who won against top male players and was ranked 8th in the general chess world ranking

raped by her uncle who was refused an abortion.

I haven't followed the news very closely but from what I can gather the girl was granted an abortion a couple days later in Warsaw

History / Did Poles living in Germany support Hitler's rise to power before World War II? [135]

because Poles in Germany were not Germans but foreign implants

Silesians in Opole region, Masurians in East Prussia were not foreing implants - their ancestors lived in their respective areas for centuries and they retained their language (one can argue if it was actually Polish in case of Silesians) in spite of the pressure for germanization since at least the middle of 18th century

Life / Gas / Benzyna prices in Poland [29]

Your 95 should also have 5% biofuel like ours.

I read an article about it just now and it never said 'should have' there, just 'can have' and as far as I know production of fuel grade ethanol is more expensive than buying crude oil from overseas (at the moment)

Language / When do I use certain characters? [33]

the difference is count vs non-count?

only it isn't? I say "potrzebuję komputera" (genetive) and not "potrzebuję komputer" (like "widzę komputer" with computer in accusative) (komputer is countable as opposed to "czas" or "spokój")

co chcesz is ungrammatical coloquialism, that's all

Governments have a tendency to sell off the family silver.

in other words you don't know what you are talking about: Polska Presse was bought by Orlen like 2 years ago (not that it made a lot of sense from economic point of view)

also the PiS government is keen on buying back companies PO and company sold (bank Pekao, PKP Energetyka come to mind)

Language / When do I use certain characters? [33]

potrzebuje sukienkę

"sukienkę" is the same as "torebkę" - it's accusative - which doesen't make sense since you would probably agree that "czasu" as in "potrzebuję czasu" is not accusative but genetive - which doestn't make sense unless you insist on a new case for Polish nouns that sometimes looks like the accusative and sometimes as genetive

Life / Gas / Benzyna prices in Poland [29]

the thing is we don't know what E10 and Super are - we are used to octane numbering here in Poland (for example 95 and 98 are 95 and 98 octane gasoline) -

the 98 octane gas costs less than 7 pln at most stations - and 95 is cheaper (the more octanes the better)

Language / When do I use certain characters? [33]

I always said torebkę.

it doesn't make sense from the grammatical point of view (unless you want a new case in declination of Polish nouns : if you say: "potrzebuję torebkę" then according to Polish grammar you should also say "potrzebuję czas" instead of "potrzebuję czasu" - which I doubt you do)

but which in practice are often found with the accusative and potrzebować is one of those (along with używać).

when I was a kid hardly anybody was saying "potrzebuję torebkę" (instead of "torebki")

There is also something called noun cases which change the ending of the nouns and their accompanying adjectives depending

in other words Duolingo is sh** at teaching people Polish - also: unless a learner of Polish is living or going to live in Poland learning the language is pretty useless

the thing is noone of any significance in Poland is calling for ANY land grabs - and the Polish military buildup is caused by the Russian neighbourhood nothing else

History / Why Was D-Day So Significant for Poland ? [266]

the forum is about Poland and Poland played no direct role in D-Day....

a couple of Polish warships played a part in artillery support of the landing British and Canadian troops (look up Polish wikipedia on the subject)

Law / Polish Graduate Working in Poland with GERMAN VISA? [27]

I'm not sure where or not there's a Polish language test for visas to settle, for example after marriage or to work.

I don't think so (never heard about it)- I met a couple of immigrants without a trace of Polish language knowledge (apart from 'dobry' which stood for 'dzień dobry' ;) )

Real Estate / Polish landlord - Walks into my apartment without asking or when i am not at home and wants half rent in cash. [36]

why does she demand half of the rent in cash?

to avoid paying some taxes - that's obvious (most Polish landlords never paid any taxes on their incomes from real estate in the past -not sure about now)

as to why landlords in Poland feel free to enter the premises they believe they own: it's a cultural thing and they are definitely not unusual in that respect

Genealogy / SKI...SKY...ZKI...Polish surname endings [38]

most of Polish surnames ending in -ski, -cki and -dzki are derived from place names - Molędzki probably means 'of (or 'from') Molędy (or perhaps Molęda) - there is a village called Molendy (previously Molędy) in southern Masovia (Masovia is the region where Warsaw lies)

Genealogy / Help Translating 1880s Marriage Bann (Chicago - Polish) [24]

Roscibórz (or Rościbórz) is not Racibórz - it's Racibórz which is in Upper Silesia - I haven't found any Ros(/ś)cibórz to be honest but this what the written documents seem to indicate

@Lenka

Franiczek Goliński was born in Pelplin ('urodzony w Pelplinie') - the only Pelplin I know is near Gdańsk - Antonina Dudzik seems to be born in a place called Roscibórz (although my quick Google search hasn't found any such place)

News / R. Trzaskowski, current mayor of Warsaw, future President of Poland [354]

How much does such an installation cost?

an LPG central heating furnace plus the gas tank cost more than 15 000 PLN now (on top of the cost of radiators, pipes and the installators' fee that typically costs another 10 000 PLN)

we spent about 10 000 PLN for the whole thing (coal furnace and the whole installation plus the fees) back in the day - additionally LPG heating to the same temperatures cost about 50 per cent more than coal heating back then

then why are so many Poles online constantly trolling Russians that as a gas superpower

I can't answer for all Poles - I personally never mocked Russia for this

also I don't think you understand the difference between LPG (liquid petrol cas - which is mostly a mixture of propane and butane and comes from oil fields degassing) and natural gas (which is mostly methane) - LPG was never distributed through gas grids in Poland and is significantly more expensive than natural gas (if you want an LPG central heating you need to invest in a tank - we didn't have neither money nor space for LPG installation (vide: the tank)
