Genealogy / Mongolian the Golden Horde - do Poles have Mongolian ancestry? [256]

The transmigration of peoples across the Steppes of Asia and past the Ural Mts. well into (along with further into) the so-called "Hungarian Basin" near the Carpathian region of Eastern Europe is a proven fact, Vlad, no longer some theory.

UK, Ireland / Are the Polish in the UK actually rude or bitter? [38]

True, Miloslaw!

Poles though often have their preconceived notion about who someone "has to be" blurted out right to their face so fast, a body can barely answer back.

It's fine to be honest, so long as it's constructive commentary. If it's only a question of saying the first thing that comes to one's lips, that seems to me just

so much raw, undigested bile, reeking of social halitosis.

I prefer, if a person has nothing polite, at least constructively pleasant to say, simply keep quiet or one risks a wasted expense of negative energy.

Many Poles ARE for sure blunt to a fault, direct, opinionated, and frequently in one's face if they have something to say. They surely are not "rude" in the sense of being

intentionally unpleasant. Like the Israelis, they waste little time with chit-chat or warming up in the bullpen.

This is has been my experience.

Life / Differences between Irish, British, Polish, American and other nations culture, tradition, music - loose talk [239]

@Johnny,
Kavanaugh is a true American hero...

@Lyzko,
"Boys will be boys", is that about it? Well, I don't buy it and neither should most of America. Looks as though the Committee is going to vote in his favor, unfortunately,

so you people have gotten your wish.

But what about the country itself? Trump, to paraphrase what was once said about Hitler, has made the president great, and the presidency small.
I hope you're satisfied.

History / Do Polish people in general dislike Russia or Germany more? [369]

Russians, even the European Russians, as compared with the Uzbeki, Bukharem or those from Azerbejian, still retain much of the influence from the Old Silk Road, evidenced clearly in their helpless addiction to palm greasing and bribery.

While a negative to my mind, it's clearly not surprising as to its origins. If during the period of the Soviet Union, a "decent" person wanted to survive, one doubtless had to be tricky or they wouldn't, plain and simple:-)

Language / Short Polish<->English translations [1040]

Czy spedziles (-as) dobry weekend?/ Czy.....................przyjemny weekend?
Jak spedziles (-as) weekend?
Czy miales (-as) mily dzien?

You're asking here no doubt for "literal" rather than "sense" translations which reflect the Polish mindset.
As in many European languages, such Anglo-Saxon type questions can rarely be rendered as such , except perhaps figuratively,
as small talk is usually far less common in those countries than it is here in the US, maybe in the UK as well:-)

Tried my best!

History / Not proud of my Polish heritage [110]

Ahemm, German cities, even the capital as late as the early 2000's, were often littered with dog poop, particularly in the public parks.
Poland surely has no monopoly on that score.

I never found Polish cities dirty! Although only in two of them, grime was the last thing I associated with Poland.

Social class distinctions nonetheless did play a significant role in the dissemination of information as you said.

History / Not proud of my Polish heritage [110]

Poland had been under the yoke of Russia's hegemony for ever so long, it nearly lost its cultural identity.

Bogznami,

The scientific contributions of Polish-born mathematicians, physicists, and astronomers are legion! Without Kopernikus, we'd still believe the sun revolves around the earth, with Lobaczewski, differential calculus received a boost, and without Manya Sklodowska aka Mme. Marie Curie, we'd perhaps know less about the effects of

radiation, much the same way as Dr. Kazimir Funk gave the first introduction in modern medicine to the power of vitamins.

Multiply every German Kepler, Leibniz, Gauss, Roentgen or Einstein by the contemporaneous accomplishments of the Poles, and one would find no less in the latter category.

Poland has simply been a victim of horrendous public relations over the past centuries and it's certainly high time to set things right on that score!

Bogznami,

Be proud of your heritage, what ever its stripe! Thank heavens you have one:-)

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

I also learned the same thing in school, only at that time during the late 1970's, that quote was attributed to Jakob Burkhardt, the famed Swiss historian.

Who knows, perhaps he purloined it from Voltaire:-)

Language / Short Polish<->English translations [1040]

Polish, like German and other inflected European languages, is ever so precise, albeit far from "logical"!
I stopped trying to find or translate the "logic" of other languages umpteen years back, as I saw I wouldn't
get anywhere, and so merely began to accept their vaguries and simply chalked it all up to cultural difference:-)

An unusually nuanced language, Polish, I find.

News / Poland's Future in the EU under PIS [51]

Poland seems to be drifting further and further away from the gravitational pull of Europeandom.
I pray she finds the wisdom to withstand the anti-Constitutionality of Messrs. Duda and Kaczynski to return to the European fold!

UK, Ireland / Why are Polish people, especially women, so disrespectful toward the English? [437]

Always found it interesting from my perspective here in the States, how soooo many Poles living in areas such as Greenpoint, Bklyn, speak no English, work off the books (because they're here illegally), live as subtenants (again, ILLEGALLY), miraculously all carry US passports:-) I know of at least two, friends of a Polish acquaintance of my wife and myself, who indeed flaunt them in front of strangers.

Makes one wonder, doesn't it!

News / Mister President Andrzej Duda - Best Poland could get. [83]

...add, a true hero who was sharply in tune with suffering, as he'd been through ever so much himself! Even Meghan, his daughter, confessed in her beautiful eulogy that her father wasn't perfect. To paraphrase Churchill's rhetorical question about democracy, "Have we got anyone better?"

News / Mister President Andrzej Duda - Best Poland could get. [83]

Trump sees himself as a maverick. A maverick "what" is my question!
At least Duda appears to be trying to do something for his own, NOT putting foreigners at the front of the line.
While I'm scarcely defending the PiS party in any shape or form, Trump got elected on a platform of "America First".
Although he talks a good game as far as his ignorant electorate are concerned, don't please sit there and tell me that
he ONLY hires American workers on his construction sites, 'cuz that's just a flat out lie.

News / Mister President Andrzej Duda - Best Poland could get. [83]

Duda seems to be plotting his own individual course, and steadfastly refuses to part from it.
He's decided despite his critics to go the road alone!

Sounds rather like Trump:-) Difference is that at least Duda behaves in a more conventionally presidential fashion, unmired completely by the burden
of the late 1960's with its cheap vulgarity and dead-head drug culture.

UK, Ireland / Why are Polish people, especially women, so disrespectful toward the English? [437]

If you weren't clueless yourself, Johnny, you would need to constantly remark on how clueless others are, as though you and yours have some sort of monopoly on the truth!! It's all the way we see it, right?

As the Bard once said (and it still hold true today), "Methinks thou protesteth too much!"
:-)
