Love / Polish Pet Names For Girls. [156]

Bambi, would it be OK for an English guy to call his Polish girlfriend "b1tch" or "wh0re" as pet names? He doesn't respect you. If you're fine with that, well, good luck.

Travel / Winter break Road trip - Poland or Ukraine? [9]

You can't just drive into Ukraine. Didn't you know the school's dates when you signed the contract? You didn't say if you you were driving. Most folks just hunker down for the winter. The roads are unpredictable and the touristy places are empty. Why not visit a travel agent and tell them you have 1000 PLN to spend. I'm sure they could find a winter break for you, maybe somewhere warm.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

I think that if I went to live in the USA, I'd think seriously about buying a firearm to keep at home. The country has so many guns, and it's so easy for anyone to get one, that it makes sense to have one there. In Europe in general, and Poland in particular, people simply don't need a gun because almost nobody else has one. I do not fear being robbed or burgled by a gunman, and neither does anyone else I know. It's just not a topic of debate or conversation here in Poland.

""He was on foot, and came nose to nose with the terrorists. He pulled out his weapon. It was his job, it was his duty," said Rocco Contento, a colleague who was a union representative at the central police station for Paris's 11th arrondissement."

The Guardian.

Let's turn that around Roger, to suggest what Poles want, since you are a Brit, is an insult.

I didn't suggest that I know what Poles want. Having said that, I know a darn sight more about how they feel than you do.

Poles were in Europe even 10600 years BC

Hahaha, thanks for that. Anyone remember grubas?

Life / Polish traditions and customs? I'm writing a crime novel that takes place in Poland. [10]

Polish men shake hands every single time they meet each other.

I'd say that was pretty much true unless they work together and they meet at work. Having said that, I shake hands with colleagues if I haven't seen them for a while (more than two days!)

Sometimes men kiss each other as a greeting, like once on each cheek, but sometimes 3 times.
However, this is rare now and more confined to rural areas.

A few years ago some friends, a youngish Warsaw couple, joined us for Sylwester, and I was a little taken aback when the guy kissed me at midnight. Other than that, straight men kissing each other is confined to family members at the airport, as far as I've seen.

I met a woman friend on the street the other day and we kissed (left, right, left). Normal stuff. If women friends come to the house, there are kisses all round.

You forgot to mention hand kissing

I didn't mention it because it doesn't exist anymore.

I haven't seen this for a while, but it does still happen, usually when a pervy old sod meets a nice young lady.
All in all, Poles are more tactile than first impressions suggest.

Life / Thread dedicated to Polish and other Slavic children [53]

If you feel that you need to cancel your account on this forum in shame, I will understand.

That would be too much to expect from this hatemonger. His lack of insight is well known, and his wild dreams of a Slavik commonwealth bear absolutely no relation to reality. I just wish he'd come to Poland and talk to ordinary people about his obsessions.

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

in UK Waitrose you can't get through the checkout without an intimate yet friendly interrogation. They are notorious for it. As well as the 'max ten items' checkout, they should have a stfu one.

Food / Bary mleczne/milk bars in Poland [31]

It would be pretty hard to spend $20 in my local milk bar, which, btw, is excellent. 25PLN will get you three courses. It used to be even cheaper when these places were subsidized, but that changed a few years ago. Before they cut the funding the place used to be full of poor folk filling up on very cheap good food. Now it's never more than half full. I guess that's the triumph of capitalism.

The spoons attached to tables myth came from a movie. Perhaps another poster can tell us which one.

Life / Move to Poland or UK? (Advice needed) [51]

Thurneman. The eastern part of Poland, where I live, would be best for you. Most people are white (well, kind of pink), and there are plenty of white supremacists in Białystok, so you'd make friends easily.

News / Food producers from Poland should stop suffering from obliged sanctions against Russia [75]

Yes, no doubt you could find 300 non-democrats in Poland, probably even more. I said "including" uni students. Admittedly, I don't know any football hooligans or other knuckle-draggers, but I stand by my comment. Perhaps your experience of life here has been different. It would be interesting to hear about it.

I can't quote any opinion polls, but of the people I know, including the 300 university students I have this semester, the vast majority are pro-EU (with, naturally, various reservations), and anti-Putin. As for Serbia or Slavic commonwealths, well, I can't say I've ever heard either mentioned. Oh, and almost all Poles are democrats.

Life / Gas / Benzyna prices in Poland [29]

I expect Obama must be something of a hero, then. No? Oh, right, only a Republican president would be able to claim credit for that. Petrol prices in Poland have trickled down.

Work / Language Teachers - do you feel respected in Poland? [86]

Yes, that didn't occur to me as I wasn't really thinking about primary school teaching. Anyway, sorry to have upset you so much. As you didn't object to anything that that renowned expert on all things Polish, Johnny, said I can only suppose that you agree with his insightful assessment of teachers.

a teaching degree is the easiest degree there is to obtain

Is there such a thing as a teaching degree? Perhaps in community colleges in impoverished parts of the USA, but in most countries teaching diplomas are earned after a first degree.

Now I are one

Hmm.

School teachers then get that little bit of authority over children and suddenly become geniuses lording over them.

I remember one of those types from school, but to tar every teacher with the same brush suggests either childhood trauma or total ignorance.

Know it all limp wristed obnoxious liberals

Is that your expert opinion?

People that can do it do it and people who can't do it teach it

Sounds like something GB Shaw once said. Which goes to show that very clever people (Shaw, obviously) can say very stupid things.
Johnny, if you have never been impressed by the skill of a good teacher, you have either been very unlucky in your academic career, or you are so dim that you wouldn't know a good teacher if you saw one. You have certainly said much about yourself in your last post.

Love / Recommendations for live wedding bands in different cities in Poland. [36]

I agree weddings are expensive. If you're having 100 people or so

Not much change from 20,000PLN just for the party. And that would be nothing fancy.

but also able to be good presenters for the many games and activities that happen on the dance floor.

Good point.

3000 for a day

Doug, two guys simply couldn't play well all night. Wedding band members pace themselves by taking breaks and having three members do the disco polo crap (yes, they also have to please three generations, not easy) or even two members and a drum machine. People are not going to hire beach bums or buskers for the night of their lives. They want a band that looks good and has done lots of weddings before. Believe me, I've hated every wedding band's music I've ever suffered, but it's not about me, is it? (I'd've booked The Who but Moonie was dead before I got married.)

I agree with everything you say, Krecik. Bands play for most of the night, so they really earn their money, and as you say, it's really two days' work, even if they play only on the wedding night. In fact, I wouldn't consider working that hard for an average of a thousand PLN.

struggling to find a live wedding band

Is that because they are all booked or because you're not sure how to go about it?
Here's one: zespolprogres.pl

Try googling Zespół na wesele Rzeszów. I hope you've got deep pockets! I know someone who paid 4000PLN for a wedding band.
