Language / Why is the Polish language so difficult? [309]

If all of you had started leaning the language when this thread started and kept practicing, today you'd be fluent enough to see no point in continuing discussions like this ;-)

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

tales of moss and fern

This is actually the Polish titile of an old Czechoslovak cartoon youtube.com/watch?v=xRQC71IviYc

Its meaning as 'fairy tales' is probably quite new and invented by kids who watched that cartoon.

Life / What it means to be Polish or How to be Polish? [14]

learning the Polish language is probably out of the question

No! Go for it. The difficulty is exagerrated. It's the best thing you can and should do I think.

Language / Verbal nouns and past-tense adjectives from imperfective & perfective verbs..when to use which aspect? [48]

and/or machine writing and/or translation?

Can be too. As much as you can expect not perfect texts in free wikipedia, I cannot find explanation for such errors in commercial sites that want to be informative. In the day of printed papers everything had to be checked twice before going to print. But now you can just press a key and done!

I think that learning proper language from the web is risky in general. You better read printed books or papers. They are also usually written in better language style.

btw, I fixed the article on Wikipedia: pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna_del_Popolo

Language / Verbal nouns and past-tense adjectives from imperfective & perfective verbs..when to use which aspect? [48]

Hi,
In passive mode you use 'zostać' with perfective and 'być' with imperfective.
e.g.
Samochód został naprawiony - the car has been reparied.
Goście zostali obdarowani upominkami - the guests was presented with gifts.
v.s.
Samochód był naprawiany kiedy go zobaczyłem - The car was being reparied when I saw it.
Kiedy wszedłem, goście byli obdarowywani upominkami - When I came in the quests were being presented with gifts.

Also, you can use 'był' with perfective when you want to express the 'finished state' of an action in the past (similar way you'd say it in the present or future).

e.g.
Samochód jest juz naprawiony - the car is fixed already.
Samochód był naprawiony kiedy go zobaczyłem - The car had been repaired already when I saw it.
Samochód będzie naprawiony kiedy się spotkamy jutro - the car will have been fixed tomorrow when we meet.

You never use 'zostac' with imprefective.

Law / Visa for Work in Poland [29]

@chala
Hi
You must find a company who is willing to hire you first. Then they must apply for the work permit for you.

Life / Solar energy in Poland [22]

Poland is a good location to generate solar power

Generating solar power is not the biggest problem in Poland. The problem is making any money out of it (as a private person) because you cannot sell your energy back to the system. You can only give them your energy and then obtain some discount (like 80% or so) when buying energy from them later on.

Or, if you want to use your own produced energy in the night you must keep it in some batteries. But the cost of such batteries is even bigger than the solar panels what makes the whole investment completely unprofitable.

Poland is a cloudy place. Solar panels are not profitable.

Classifieds / Help With Translating Handwritten Polish Records [18]

It's definitely Russian. Mazowieckie was Russian partition in XIX century. I could only decipher some dates and names but cannot grasp the actual meaning of those documents. You must find some Russian person to translate.

Language / How well do Polish people understand Slovak? [88]

say if I wanted to visit both countries (poland and slovakia) and get by with only one language, which language would be a better choice - Polish or Slovak?

If you want to learn a bit of one and be able to understand both then forget it. I think you will even not be able to notice the similarities (unless some word stems when written).

Feedback / Is it Polish forum or foreign forum? [159]

I've been reading PF for quite a long time, and didn't notice that negative opinions about Poland are majority here.
I just think you exaggerate.

Life / Move to Poland or UK? (Advice needed) [51]

Check this:
pl.atos.net/pl-pl/home/kariera/kierunki-kariery/managed-operations.html
It's in Polish mixed with English so you should be able to understand. Atos is recruting many foreigners in call centers and similar in Bydgoszcz, so you may find something for you. Additionally, Bydgoszcz is still relatively 'pure' and multiculturalism is almost non-existent here.

Language / RUDE word form conjugation + communicating on facebook in Polish [15]

But the point is no one in Poland uses "pierdalać" ("pierdalam", "pierdalasz" etc.) as standalone words.

Nobody said that. The '-' before the stem means "put a prefix here" and that was meant in the original question as far as I understood.

Language / RUDE word form conjugation + communicating on facebook in Polish [15]

said -pierdolić was the imperfective form of -pierdalać. It seems she just got muddled.

No, she was right. She just meant the whole -pierdolić/-pierdalać family of words that are created by prefixing these stems e.g.:

od-pierdolić / od-pierdalać to do something wrong/strange
pod-pierdolić / pod-pierdalać to steal, to denounce,
s-pierdolić / s-pierdalać to escape, to fail

etc.

Language / Family members in Polish [8]

But my book says that 'stryjenka' is your father's brother's wife, and 'wujenka' is your mother's brother's wife.

Formally yes. But almost nobody uses those names any more. They both are just 'ciocie' (- pl., 'ciocia' - sing.).

Language / Polish slang phrases - most popular. [606]

They like to say 'siemanko' instead of 'good morning' at register time. I understand that this is slang for 'hello', but is it disrespectful?

When said to a teacher, especially in Poland, then I'd say yes. But again, I may be outdated... ;-)

Language / Fun with Polish ambiguous language [59]

You can disambiguate the two meanings by saying "zamknąć na klucz,"

We usually say 'zakluczyć' - to lock
It's probably a colloquial word but makes it less ambiguous.

Po polsku / Życie pod wspólnym dachem. Jak to jest? [28]

bałam się utraty mojej, tak lubianej czasami przeze mnie, chęci spędzania czasu w samotności i realizacji własnych pasji.

Czy myślisz, ze on nie ma tego samego? Każdy potrzebuje czasem samotności. Mieszkanie razem nie oznacza od razu robienia zawsze wszystkiego wspólnie. Po prostu, daje się sobie na wzajem od czasu do czasu 'czas prywatny' kiedy każde zajmuje się swoimi sprawami i już. Inaczej sie nie da :-)
