Love / Advice needed... Canadian guy to meet a Polish woman in Poland [15]

@delphiandomine

How could you call him and polish men general cavemen? Many polish women are with foreigners of all colors and countries but nonetheless polish women generally marry polish men. Only a small portion of marriages in Poland are interracial - the vast majority are not. There are many polish women though with American guys, canadian, british, german, even with Indian guys as well as men from former French African colonies. Quite frankly I'm happy that Poland is now more on the world stage and guys from all over love polish girls because they're (in general of course) not only beautiful but well educated smart and family oriented. Nonetheless though the majority of marriages in Poland are between two poles... Just as in almost any other country - koreans marry koreans, Mexicans marry Mexicans etc. Idk why you'd classify roughly half the polish population as cavemen that's very rude. Just try to lay off the insults please so we can get some more new people around here

Ya def don't go to Poland without a degree. IT is a hot paying good career option atm in Poland. Even people who simply know how to program code provide security etc are in great demand too even if they don't have a 4 6 8 year degree. However youd need to know locals to squeeze yourself into a job like that. Its way better working for foreign corps though esp American British Scandinavian German etc. Not sure about Canadian but there is a lot of American ones.

News / Future of Polish-Ukrainian relations [560]

When I've visited Poland I've found poles are generally accepting of them but some poles kind of view them as 'the help.' Its mainly though because they tend to have lower income type jobs that immigrants have when they first arrive in a country just like poles who settled abroad . I've met very kind ukranians and they speak better polish than me after being there under a year lol

Love / I am in love with a Polish man but he is trouble [15]

He's either

A) a criminal

B) pretending to be a criminal to play the bad boy card

C) could have some very strange perversions he is embarrassed of

D) a young emo/goth dude. Does he wear all black and have a brooding disposition? (He's not evil, he's just read too much Bram stoker and listened to too much Cannibal Corpse)

Personally if a girl told me straight up I'm crazy, I'm evil, I'm a $lut, etc it would def put me on guard. Then again the crazies tend to be the best in bed.

Maybe ask him where he works or what he does for a living? Maybe ask him what kind of girls or fantasies he's into? That could help narrow down his 'evil' side or why he believes he's such... Maybe he's just a drug dealer or something. In that case its a personal preference on how you view such activities.

Either way is be very careful... Its like the story of the old woman who brought a frozen snake into her house and was surprised when the snake bit her... The guys telling you he's evil - that's a big warning sign. Its one thing to say on a date things like I'm shy, I'm from a poor family, I'm unemployed, I'm horny, hell I've had a girl tell me straight up she's diagnosed bipolar before. But evil??

Life / Polish-Canadian wanting to move to Poland - trying to start a new life, make friends, combat depression etc. [10]

I would highly recommend networking with some fellow poles and visit first. You don't want to jump right into such a big decision especially if you don't have the funds or prospects for work just yet. Be prepared to make a fraction of what Canadian jobs pay even with a bachelor's but then again many things are cheaper. I can give you the names of a few corporations that pay decent by polish standards in my city but never really looked outside of it and even then it was more out of curiosity.

Also private practice medicine in poland (outside of zus of course) is great from my experience in the sense that its cheap and the medicine is holistic. Not sure about psychiatric care but general practice and dental is great from my experience. Maybe they can help you get off the strong ssris and maois or find some more appropriate meds with less side effects.

I have my ups and downs too. Such is life. You find something that you enjoy and move on with your day to day responsibilities. For me it could be kayaking, travelling, riding the hog, going on a date, sparring at the gym, drinking at the clubs whatever. Find a few hobbies and people who are interested in them. Its a great way to meet people, network, make friends, meet a significant other, etc.

Law / Settling into Poland to make it a new home; documents, drivers license, tax code, etc. [10]

So I wanted to ask you all especially those who moved from an Anglophone country to Poland how long did it take you to become familiar with day to day things in Poland?

Id especially like to hear a brief timeline of what kind of things you had to do to really be settled in poland and make it your new home. Some of the things id like to know include did you have a job offer before you moved or did you find work once already in Poland? What kind of documents should a polish citizen have aside from a dowod, passport and drivers license? Did you have any issues setting up a bank account? How did you go about obtaining a drivers license - is it similar to the US where you just take a written and driving test? How long did it take you to become familiar with the surroundings?

Also as far as taxes obviously you have to pay taxes if working in poland but do you also pay taxes back home? I've heard a few conflicting reports on this topic. Some say no and pointed to a specific article in the tax code while others say if you wish to remain a citizen of the us for example you still have to report your income abroad.

Any info on the questions and your own experience on the above would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Law / Settling into Poland to make it a new home; documents, drivers license, tax code, etc. [10]

Thanks jon. I've read that the us has some 40 different tax agreements with other nations. There appears to be several exclusions though. I typically have a Jackson Hewitt or my dads accountant to my taxes but id probably have to find someone that specializes in expats or at least is familiar with them.

Not sure if I'm reading this correctly, but it would appear that if I make under 100k usd (which I highly doubt ill have a salary over 370k zl in poland) I may be able to exclude this income earned in Poland from my us taxes:

irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/foreign-earned-income-exclusion

If I'm reading this correctly if I've lived in Poland and paid income taxes there then I could claim the exclusion below after a year. That first years income id have to pay to both poland and us but then after living there a year id qualify for the exclusion and wouldn't be taxed unless I made over 100k usd income in Poland

irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/foreign-earned-income-exclusion-can-i-claim-the-exclusion-or-deduction

Sorry this is all like Greek to me...

Ugh looks like ill need an accountant that's familiar with expat tax liabilities.

Law / Settling into Poland to make it a new home; documents, drivers license, tax code, etc. [10]

After visiting Poland and the rest of Europe many times I've come to the conclusion that money isn't everything and I would be more than willing to trade a far smaller income and a humble existence for life in Europe. The us is great don't get me wrong. While the income potential and opportunities here are vast, the quality of life overall doesn't even compare to Europe. We actually rank in the some teenth place on the happiness/quality of life index with countries like norway, iceland, denmark, finland, sweden, Germany consistently ranking at the top and ahead of us by a long shot.

I miss my home continent. There's no cobblestone ryneks here, every food and drink is basically modified corn, there's enormous income inequality and many other societal problems, and everyone only seems to have working and politics on their mind. Its like no one stops to smell the roses every once in awhile. Plus all my family is scattered throughout europe literally from one end to the other - England to Poland. I supposedly have some family outside Minsk and possibly even Kazakhstan but never met them. This was during the late Stalin and early Brezhnev years where people were being forced to migrate and some of the family from my dads side ended up scattered around the ussr.

But ya I'm gradually getting my ducks in order to move out in the next few years. I plan to save up enough money to buy a small condo, maybe open a small business like a currency exchange or pawn shop, learn some of the more technical business/law/etc polish terminology (could use a few hours of tutoring if someone's good with business polish) and perhaps brush up on my Spanish and Russian so in the worst case I can find employment at some company. While just like every other human on the planet I want to have a decent existence but if having a big house and working 24/7 just to pay the mortgage means never seeing my family and never being able to take a stroll in a cobblestone rynek meeting people of all walks of life, ill take a simpler existence and be happy. Even in the us itd be kind of weird to order only coffee with a friend and sit there chatting for 2 hours yet that's totally normal in Europe.

Like Travolta said in pulp fiction when discussing Europe (specifically holland) 'they got the same $hit as they do over here, its just a little bit different '

Law / Settling into Poland to make it a new home; documents, drivers license, tax code, etc. [10]

@Lyzko

I'm pretty fluent in polish as I was born there and all (actually during prl times ) but most of my day to day communication is in english nonetheless. I can certainly get around in poland that's not a problem but I sometimes mess up (kalecze as they call it) the endings of some words and don't know some of the more technical terms used in business, biology, law, etc. Every time I go to Poland though its the best practice. I'm not too concerned about fully mastering the language as itd take me a year at most living there since that forces you to learn. Plus I could supplement it with a few tutoring lessons in business polish. Like I didn't know what a sp zoo stood for until fairly recently.

Genealogy / Poland's distribution of I1 haplogroup (Germanic haplogroup) and influences from Europe [17]

@Ziemowit

I've read about the haplogroups about various other nationalities esp after I sent my DNA in and and I'm sure I can find some info on common haplogroups of the irish and scottish. Info on Gaelic Welsh speakers specifically may be harder to find.

Apparently there is actually a small but rather significant amount of Celtic genes in poles especially those in northern Poland.

Manx is a general adjective to describe people or things from the Isle of Man. A very old civilization by European standards. Also one of the best places to live in the UK due to their low tax schemes, high income and high HDI.

Genealogy / Poland's distribution of I1 haplogroup (Germanic haplogroup) and influences from Europe [17]

@Atch

Very interesting. It is small indeed. Many of the very wealthy little islands like malta or Microsystems like Lichtenstein San Marino Andorra etc have a very high standard of living esp compared to the rest of larger eu countries. They seem to mostly thrive off banking, tourism, services and perhaps a lil agriculture and fishing depending on the country. if I remember correctly isle of man has a very rare cow that disappeared in the rest of England forgot the name of it though.

Also there is a small basque community in the bus in Boise, idaho. Interesting language basque.. Kind of like Spanish (the real Spanish not Latino Spanish) in sound but yet different.

Spanish people in general I believe are the ancient iberians. I took Latin in high school for 4 years and got to read some of ceasar Ptolemy etc. As far as specific dna etc I'm not sure.

There was probably influence to and from Spain to the UK and Ireland especially during Roman times. Although much of the northern lands of the British islands were isolated by hadrians wall i.e. the picts.

Ill have to dig it up this was a few years back... R1a or r1a1 or something. It didn't really define it specifically as polish though but rather eastern European. It said I was like 75%/80% eastern euro and the rest scandinavian. Maybe because the potop szwedzki? I don't know... There's no one in our family that I know of that's Swedish. Most are polish, lithuanian, and belorussian. Ill find it and upload it if possible altho the 100kb size is rather prohibitive

Genealogy / Poland's distribution of I1 haplogroup (Germanic haplogroup) and influences from Europe [17]

@Ziemowit

Well first off I think the poles of yesteryear I.e. those in the middle ages, renaissance, commonwealth years, etc identified poland with much larger eastern boundaries esp during the polish-lithuanian commonwealth. The western part of medieval, ww1, modern poland was kind of there frontier boundary to western europe. Its just the lines would change so you may use some poles with germanic Anglo Saxon type genes. However if you're Ukrainian or Russian itll tell you basically that your genera are eastern European and it gives you various things by which you can narrow down countries.

If you're interested in learning more about the various little tribes inhabiting poland pre 996 ad and during the Roman times you can check out ptolemys accounts. A while back I wrote about the various tribes inhabiting poland. So in general no there most likely wasn't a giant migration from Rome into poland and the other parts - maybe a little at the end after Rome's fall but in general there would be been trade routes with people ideas and goods especially with Poland's amber being sent out and of course stuff and people coming from the Roman world. This was known as the amber trail and you can look it up in wiki as well.

News / Thousands of teachers to lose their jobs in Poland [57]

I heard that they reorganized the whole liceum gimnazium etc system and that it matches basically the us system. Again this is just what I have heard while in poland... Im sure this will affect many teachers though and students will be merely reorganized. Unfortunately teachers at that level don't get as much respect in polish society or good wages like they would in the us for example. Only professors tend to command high salaries and respect in polish society.

My aunt is a grade school teacher I believe 1st grade or some other really young grade. When I visited her she told me about the changes but it didn't sound like she was worried about losing her job or anything. She told me actually there's a young Chinese girl in her class who's enrolled in her class. How cool is that

@delphiandomine

Yea I just meant like the length that's similar to the us - 8 years grade school (plus usually 1 for kindergarten) and 4 years high school. I believe the old system had junior high or something of the sorts. There are some grade schools here that have a separate school or building for 6th to 8th graders. As far as the specifics I couldn't tell ya delph idk. If unis are allowed to give their own tests instead of a standardized one that could def lead to corruption nepotism etc. Typically though from what I've heard the private schools are considered less prestigious than state schools. The opinion is formed because people believe that the private unis will graduate anyone that pays. I don't know how much truth there is to that but nonetheless many poles believe that. I wonder if these changes will affect both the private and public unis though. That also sucks for the student because if say a h.s. senior wants to go to 1 of 3 schools, theorectially if all unis do end up administering their own entrance test, the student would have to take 3 tests rather than 1 standardized entrance exam.

Life / How are electric cars doing in Poland? [413]

There's a lot of hybrids I.e. Toyota auris especially. People seem to drive cars with either a small often turbocharged diesel or will run their car on lpg. Gas is ridiculously expensive in Poland. Its perhaps the only common everyday item that's pricier than in the us.

However as far as electric cars I haven't seen one yet in poland. Perhaps a few wealthy people have them but i haven't seen one yet. Tons of hybrids diesel and lpg though

Love / Egyptian guy with Polish girl - is it normal? [18]

Maybe she just didn't want to have a long distance relationship

Also polish women value their independence much like any other European woman. When you try to confine her or try to like plan her future out it makes her crazy. You were most likely going out a year or two and you were exotic fling to her or a rebound, then you screwed up by falling in love w her talking w her about ur family and all this stuff and u scared her off. At least that's my theory...

Also you know very well that in Muslim society if a Muslim man wishes to marry a non Muslim she must convert. I don't know how traditional and religious your family is but to many egyptian families conversion would be a requirement for them to accept the bride and marriage.

Life / Should I expect racism as a 'black' woman in Poland [149]

To any blacks/Africans looking to come to Poland:

There are quite a few black tourists - especially from the former French colonies and west africa in general. There's also a growing amount of residents from places like nigeria, Ghana, etc. You may receive a few prolonged stares simply because there isn't many blacks in poland atm and if comparing foreign groups there's far more Koreans and Chinese (esp tourists). However I wouldn't expect any downright racism from normal day to day interactions. If someone is racist towards you itd mostly be from young soccer hoolis that often hang out around bloki in usually poorer areas loitering about or a really drunk guy (oftentimes Ukrainian - idk why it seems these guys start like 3/4 of all the fights in the clubs and bars. Polish guys use to do that back in commie tomes and the 90s but its become passe).

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

Racism is everywhere its just a few very liberal eu countries that have spent tons of time, money and effort to fight a problem that was already very small and resulted in hardly any deaths. Thanks to that culture they've created a society where even saying something like 'boy, there's an awful lot of new mosques here now' or even something that can be easily proven by statistics like 'rape cases have gone up exponentially since the European migrant crisis' gets you labeled nazi, racist etc. I'm all for fighting discrimination esp at an institution level, but when free speech gets stifled because someone might get offended and peoples safety is at stake.. Well a good dose of common sense is needed.

I hate to break it to you agniesca but most people in the world are racist or at the very least hold strong prejudices - examples: in China the people believe that all blacks are backward, poor, and violent. Meanwhile they view Jews as the archetypal businessmen and even one of the best selling books in China is titles something to the extent of 'business secrets of the jews' or Jewish guide to business something like that. Meanwhile in India, Hindus believe they are superior to Africans in nearly every way. Even Ghandi called Africans lazy and uncultured and had a rather supremacist view of Indians. Yet he's soooo celebrated as a figure of social justice. In europe, (generally speaking) poles and Russians are wary of each other, no one in the Balkans gets along anymore, Greeks hate Jews, sicilians don't really like other northern italians, no one seems to like the Albanians or gypsies, Jews (esp zionists) don't like Palestinians and Persians and vice versa, azeris and Armenians don't get along, and there's tons of other examples... Of course these are all generally speaking - not everyone is those societies is racist and the number of people who hold racist views seems to be declining with globalization

You can't totally ever eliminate racism and it appears ever more clear each day that a ton of problems arise when a society is essentially forced to be multiracial rather than experiencing globalization and new ideas and new people at its own pace. Even with all these affirmative action programs here to get blacks or others into jobs and colleges they just interact with their own kind. If you dont believe me take a drive to any us college and go to the cafeteria.

People simply subconsciously hang out with their own type. Even in an uncontrolled environment like a college cafeteria where no ones telling anyone where to sit and with who to interact you'll see the Asians sitting with Asians, white frat guys w frat guys, blacks with blacks and usually the only table with some diversity tends to be the most liberal types with the funky hair colors and piercings who go out of their way to make friends with a person of a different race crews religion while not realizing many times they're trying to make friends with someone that's a minority due to their minority status thereby increasing their own 'tolerance clout' rather than making friends with a person due to their personality and not their race creed religion etc. And even at that table its mostly lgbt whites looking for the token black guy or girl who had trouble fitting in at the black table.

News / Adam Michnik awarded for integrity, professionalism and high standards. Poland's No. 1 fascist? [321]

You call him the greatest polish citizen alive, many call him the greatest polish traitor alive.

Everyone lies Harry. Pis po cnn fox reps democrats it makes little difference.. Nonetheless at the end of the day adas is just another council of foreign relations globalist neo-commie who thinks he knows what's best for the world and especially poland. Im all for meaningful debate but the guy seems to have a boner for putting down polish people and the church (which yes like any religion has had its issues, but of course he'll never dare to write about sexual abuse taking place in yeshivas or the organ trafficking money laundering rabbis) while celebrating communists like jaruzelski who caused tons of suffering for everyday poles during the stan wojenny. Why anyone whos lived during those times would have any respect for michnik when he tries to clear jaruzelskis name and deeds is beyond me. The guy has no shame he went to lech Kaczynski asking for some sort of pardons for commies just to write negative articles about the kaczynskis later. Zero sense of honor, loyalty or even friendship. Zero sense of patriotism. All he knows is how to do is covertly spread cfr policies through his influence. This she incident with lech too is just a notch is his belt of the commie whitewashing attempts since the 90s and he's been at it ever since. Everyone in poland knows he's a two timing back stabbing Zionist who will say all the worst things about poles and the church but not one single word of critism against the apartheid supremacist regime of Israel or his cfr handlers. In his words the Palestinians plight is a 'non issue.' Polish people stupidly read his papers since its one of the largest if not the largest media outlet but they know damn well what he's all about.. The majority of poles are sick of that stuttering traitor but why they keep on reading gw and affiliated publications is beyond me. I don't expect you to understand where I'm coming from but as someone who's family lived under jaruzelski and someone who's loyalty lies to poland and the church I simply can't respect michnik. Hell ill take korwin komorowski and even kopacz over michnik any day.

I actually don't mind wyborcza all that much as they have some decent articles that are fairly objective for a more left leaning paper. However the anti polish anti church articles cannot be ignored. Michniks whole personal goal seems to be to mingle with other elitist internstionalists who want to turn poland (and any other resistance to them like Hungary) into even more of a us/eu vassal state with no sovereignty where neo commie elites (of whom a significant portion are also Zionists like michnik and condemn poland for not following some eu agreement while never holding Israel accountable for its innumerable un violations) hold all the power and anyone and can simply erase Poland's sovereignty by telling us what laws we should pass, who we should accept in our country, etc. That's what the cfr is all about on an international level and he's no different.

Its rather commonly used here to differentiate between basically a non transsexual non gay person I.e. cisgender cissexual. Apparently there's dozens of these pronouns adjectives that have come into English vernacular the past few years. Now if someone doesn't want to be called he/she they can be called 'ze'

There's dozens of these new words we had to learn through some 'sensitivity training' at my college. It was kind of ridiculous because it was like a 2 day all day long event. Thank god for weed..

@rozumiemnic
@delphiandomine
See to most people yes that would annoy them and confuse them to no end... Id imagine even transsexuals say a man to women want to be called a woman as opposed to something else esp after all the money time etc spent on their transformation.

Hmm strange I've actually only heard this term being used within the past year or two and usually by young millenials at the uni in the process of getting their bachelor's. Usually it was to criticize a 'cis white male' as an oppressor, and to force that person to defend themselves against being an oppressor. Unfortunatlet no matter how many rallies you go to money and time spent on causes, it is never enough because of your white skin and anatomy. Seems silly but alas that is how the campuses function in many of best colleges in the U.S.

@delphiandomine

I know what you mean. Its counterproductive. Unfortunately much lucid debate or any other vocalizations of nuanced opinions is simply stifled on campuses all around here. Amusing but sadly a local college recently held a mock funeral - the death of higher education for such very reasons. There are rallies, demonstrations etc pretty regularly and what's unfortunate is that their screaming and bullhorns often disrupts lectures. However if a professor tells them to be quiet so he or she can teach those same students will then demonstrate till that professor is fired. I don't mind having blm lgbtq etc demonstrations or rallies on campus because you need social justice warriors in society. However a lot of the participants form a sort of mob mentality and will scream chant and cry to get their way - usually the firing of some professor, administrator or the shutting down of an invited speaker they disagree with. Many professors have been called the 'f***ing (cis) white male' line by their own students which is totally disrespectful and in most other countries would result in that students expulsion. Not here though - its the professor who is let go. They tend to not be interested in lucid debate. Most students that identify as say conservative, republican, etc keep their mouths shut and won't debate out of fear. In fact sometimes its not enough to just go to class, keep your mouth shut, and study - no... Oftentimes students in the class will ask you why you weren't at some rally or demonstration and God forbid you say because you were busy or worse that you don't really care. There is social injustice - I'm not denying that. Its a lot better than it was for minorities and lgbtq people but nonetheless there's still issues. The problem is that many of these students will put on a mask of helping others but instead create an atmosphere where they can never be criticized and any opposing views or even probing type of debate is simply shut down and doesn't exist. Its almost like the fascism of the 30s and 40s. Lets just hope it never gets to the stage where they're burning books on campuses like mark twains huck Finn because it isn't compatible with their worldview.

@TheOther
Very true. Most of the people who eat drink and breathe racist ideology I.e. skinheads are often unemployed, undereducated and simply looking for a scapegoat. Its one thing to be patriotic for ones nation and want that nations people to control their own destiny but another to advance your own nationalitys agenda at the cost of others. Racism, or at least phobias, are increasing though especially in europe towards Muslims. This is understandable because of all the terrorist attacks, rape cases, etc. However one must understand that the average Muslim family is perhaps very culturally different but most are not terrorists, rapists, etc. It all comes back to how you were raised and your own conscience. The problem is that many of these migrants were used to a pretty lawless country without the liberal laws and social safety net that much of western Europe has and they've exploited that system for their own benefit - especially financially. Many of them have a sort of conquerer mentality which is further fueled by radical imams explaining how Muslims will conquer Europe through birthrates and establish sharia. When people see these sermons online or are accosted in a Muslim area or perhaps know someone who was forced to move or otherwise change their life to accomdate people who aren't even citizens that's when tensions arise and racism increases. At the same time though many Muslims don't view Europeans as equals but rather kuffar to be conquered. Again not everyone but nonetheless much of these migrants have little education so all they know is what they learned from an imam at a mosque - many of which are fundrd by Saudi to spread wahabism/salafism. This is what poland wants to avoid. Most poles know that the average Muslim isn't a terrorist but they simply don't want the risk of 1 or 2 slipping in out of thousand.
Dirk diggler
30 Jun 2017
Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

@Wulkan

Well like I said its mainly because of the terrorist attacks. Most poles and most Americans as well know that the majority of Muslims aren't terrorists. However they simply don't want a few terrorists to sneak in with the families which has obviously happened in Germany, France, uk, etc. Its not just cars either - its beheadings of soldiers on uk streets, assault style attacks on cafes concerts, etc. Polish people just don't want any part of it. Also polish men aren't scared to take things into their own hands. When that Tunisian guy stabbed a pole they burned down his kebab restaurant. When some middle easterners started getting too frisky with the polish girls at the beach they all got beat up. In those type of scenarios the police do little to stop them.

Another issue is culture clash...
