Language / Is math in Polish different than in English? [59]

My experience of British education system is that when you ask an office worker to do a simple math problem (excel calculations) even inteligent British person usually says - "I can't do that, I'm not a mathematician!".

Go figure.

In Poland mathematics is important part of the studies, it is not being pushed aside (at least it didn't used to!).

I agree with memorising tons of material and not necessarily teaching you to think thing (again, at least that's how it used to be).

Love / Are Polish men shy and take things slow? [116]

Same here.

I think that this might be the biggest reason of his hesitation.
Those things are impossible to hide and if anythings doesn't go perfect...you know how it works.
Also his colleagues could give him hard time.

Love / My wife is Polish and it's difficult for her to open up and talk about her feelings [14]

Gosc, even though you are right in saying that everyone is different, that kind of posts holds some merit. After all although everyone is different statistic can be applied to a group (Asimov).

Anyway saying that some generalizations cannot be made about a large group of people in unwise. Can't you generalize that Polish people are more religious than Czech people? Sure you can. Can't you generalize that there's more Black people in Africa than in Poland? Sure you can.

So kindly let people discuss as they please, if they don't offend someone.

I have lived in Poland all my life and hold different opinion than you, and I'm allowed to, kind sir.

Edit: "there is NO difference between Poles and others" - and this is simply untrue. Are you saying there is no cultural difference between person from Poland, Iran, Japan and USA, for example? There are. MASSIVE ones.

Love / My wife is Polish and it's difficult for her to open up and talk about her feelings [14]

I'm trying to say that not all such emails have to be baseless - for example fot me this one is not - it's a genuine question.

And in my opinion Polish women might have some reservations about talking deep feelings with their partners - it's a cultural thing, we like to keep those things to ourselves. Of course some tend to share more than the others,(I share a lot between close friends :)) however some really private stuff even I keep to myself :) What do you think?

Classifieds / Wedding reception in Katowice, Poland [14]

I'd definitelly recommend finding nice venue, but not a Hotel. Things like Sala Weselna, Bankietowa, rooms in smalish palaces and so on usually offer such things with catering (sometime they don't provide cakes). Problem is that good ones are usually booked two years in advance, that's why people sometimes choose strange wedding dates to fit in. Same thing with bands, usually booked.

As for alcohol 400 bottles of vodka seems an excess, unless we are talking about extremly boozy family. Polish standard is 1 liter of vodka per person (calculated for everyone, including children), it should be enough. Usually you can get a deal with stores for them to accept the leftovers. For last 10 years people usually have some other alcohol available (beer and wine) for young people and not so heavy boozers.

If you're not in situation where all of family is near some area, you can always find a place whith hotel rooms, which comes handy for out -of-towners.

I'd recommend looking for something like this: villanatura.pl/galeria/villa_natura mind it's not a suggestion, it's far away from Katowice, just to show you what type of place I'm talking about.

Language / Short Polish<->English translations [1033]

They want you to propose 3 topics you'd want to write about (with short explentation) and planned volume of article for each topic.

I'd assume that 12500, 7500 and 5500 are some sort of a standard volume for them.

Edit: haha three responses, all starting with the same words ;) (not on purpouse)

Food / Why Poles not like rice? [81]

Poles like potatoes. They also like rice, and the sachettes that Polsyr mentioned are available on market for probably 15 years now and very popular.

Study / I got accepted into a university in Gliwice, Poland! [38]

Nawzat

if you are looking for country that needs chemists you should look for countries with strong industrial production. Croatia is not one of them.

If you want to work elsewhere, then it doesn't matter :)

Life / How much money should I save to move to Poland? [17]

Ikea is for design, not necessery quality.
People nowadays don't want to buy furniture for 100years, those will be out of style/boring as *** in 10 years so it's better to buy cheap and change.

Genealogy / Why Polish aren't white?? [272]

Uncle Mitch

I think what nothanks was trying to say is that if you are 25% German, 25% French and 50% Spanish, then you are neither. You are 100% American :) Of course you have some ancestry in Germany, but if you were not born in Germany or at least one of your parents, some may consider you 0% German for example. Not entirely my opinion though :)

Anyway, I'd love to hear a comparison between Tennesee and NJ, especially if you own a cabin and some land :) Great outdoors? Hate the city?

Please do not change the topic.

USA, Canada / Thoughts on moving to Poland from USA [62]

I believe you could easilly fit in.
First you should decide what location would be the best for you.
If you are looking for a large city with interesting night life and big English speaking comunity I'd check Wroclaw or Poznan. For following reasons:

- cleaner then Krakow,
- not Warsaw ;)
- Wroclaw is quite close to mountains
- college cities
- Wroclaw has stunning architecture and is a nice place to be.

Alternatively you could look for a small city close to forrests and stay there :). I have there two people fighting in me: one wants to live in the middle of the forrest with noone around, the other wants to live closer to culture, also for children's activities. None of them really wants to live in the middle of a big city. I could consider living in one of bi city "bedrooms", as long as it's close to forrest :).

Feedback / Is it Polish forum or foreign forum? [159]

WTF are you talking about Ktos?
Pole is not an offensive term?. It's normal term, just like German or American.
Certainly not offensive in Poland!

And btw. "murzyn" is offensive. It should be Murzyn - You should now that, being so sensitive and all.
