Study / Physical therapy BA degree in Poland - how schooling here transfers over to the United States? [10]

On the flip side, wages for allied medical fields are higher in California than in the rest of the US. Double or more than what you would get in Texas, Florida or the South. So studying in California would pay off.

Anna81, I would agree with this whole-heartily but what you have to remember is that living in California, especially southern California, the cost of housing is one of the most expensive places to live in the U.S. DominicB. is correct if a persons chooses to be in a specialized field that requires a license it would be best to get it through school in California. California does not have reciprocity as other states do and rely on their own system, especially in the health care industry.

Love / Are Polish men shy and take things slow? [116]

Wow, Shizuka I sure hope that it works out for you. I'm sure it doesn't matter Polish guy, English guy, American guy, being with a cute female happens to be fun for any guy unless he's gay or crazy. I'm sure he finds you attractive. It's neat to see innocent romance once in a while, not like the stuff on TV in any form.

Love / My wife is Polish and it's difficult for her to open up and talk about her feelings [14]

Some background, my wife is born and raised in Poland. She speaks, (of course) fluent Polish, English and Russian, (I guess she's old school), we met got married and and now we live in the US. We have been married for awhile but have had an on-going problem with her being able to open up and express what she is feeling. I was just in Poland and she seems to be be able to talk it up in Poland with her friends and other Polish people. Her English is fluent enough so that I'm sure that she is not translating Polish to English in her head. I guess my question to the Polish woman is, culturally are Polish woman less open about their feelings and what is going on inside. Or is it Polish women tend to less expressive and more dismissive of themselves. I really just want her to speak what's on her mind. We've been married 5 years and it's still a big problem. Or perhaps even though she speaks good English perhaps she still at a loss of expressing herself because it's not her "First" language? Maybe it's not cultural Polish problem at all and just hers?

Love / My wife is Polish and it's difficult for her to open up and talk about her feelings [14]

Gosc123456 you are right I am generalizing and shouldn't be. I was looking to perhaps gain some insight from another Polish woman's prospective that is not readily available to me as we are currently living in the US. I apologize if it came off categorically offensive, that was not my intentions. You are correct that it may be just her individual trait and not a cultural Pole nature. I can only say that I love the polish culture and the country and only wish to enhance my understanding. I am currently trying to learn Polish, which is a very difficult language to grasp. Everyone thank you for your comment and intentions to respond to my query.

Love / My wife is Polish and it's difficult for her to open up and talk about her feelings [14]

Wow, bbcr4 that is really helpful insight, I only wish a closer communicative relationship with her. My wife is currently in Poland and when I call via Skype or on Whatsapp I talk and have news about what I'm doing and what's going on, but when I ask her I basically get everything's fine and static on the line. I don't get alot of the details....you know, just chit chat. I look forward to talking about the simple things and getting her ideas about stuff isn't if it's not important to her. Your wife sounds alot like my wife. If I may ask, what region of Poland as your wife raised? Not that it matters. My wife born and raised in a city called Sandomierz, Poland, its about 200 KM Northeast of Krakow. I really appreciate the insight and suggestions and will look forward to trying them out on her if/and when she returns. She's kind of threatened that she might stay in Poland, but we will see what happens.

Love / My wife is Polish and it's difficult for her to open up and talk about her feelings [14]

Atch, I really appreciate the woman's point of view about all of this, you described thing right how things are handled in our house, I tend to want a partner who is going to help figure things out. My problem is that I was a Marine, came from 8 kids, and very independent and you know I don't need anyone necessarily to help out. But I want her to speak up and speak her mind about things so that we have communicative intimacy as well as physical intimacy. When we have conflict she tends to be the next oh well lets move on and let whatever the conflict was pass, but I'm still back at examining the problem and let's talk it out and come to a solution or agree to disagree but come to a conclusion somehow. I'm a big advocate of using "I" messages describing how Im feeling and coming from a Marine that's a big step. I've asked a thousand times to begin a conversation like that but we don't get anywhere.

No she hasn't become more uncommunicative but since being back in Poland I guess old ways have a tendency to rise to the surface while she is there. How much Polish do you speak Atch? I'm learning but it's difficult and don't have much time to study having to work full time...I need some time for fun too! I have spoken to her about eventually moving back to Poland from the US when I'm ready to retire. Her mom is 80 or so now and she is getting to the point that it's hard for her to get around. I'm willing to give up stuff here and move there, but when I ask her thoughts she doesn't express much about what she thinks should happen. She has a small job here which doesn't pay very much that she really doesn't like very much so there isn't much keeping her here.

I hesitate a little leaving because we currently live in California and the only thing I like is that the weather is nice most of the time but I HATE all the traffic and hustle and business of southern California. I'd give anything to have that kind of weather in beautiful Poland in a small village with a slow life. Problem is that we are a mixed couple with me being half-black/white and well you may know about how the Polish feel about marrying outside of their race, it's not received all that well. They think you marry just to immigrate to Poland but in actuality she's immigrated to the US. If she wasn't able to be a dual citizen I know she would have never become a US citizen.

You are right about your last statement, it is what we do as people together that is important, and that's why it's so important that I get her buy in and communication within our relationship because that's what's going to get us through the hard times.

Thanks for your response, sorry this is so long.

Law / Obligation of a foreign dad; Polish girl he was with is pregnant. What in papers if he can't be for the birth? [4]

Wow, what a hard place to be in at the time. I know that you are probably going to get a lot of not so useful comments and/or criticisms. So I was in somewhat of a situation as you were, no possibly way she could end up pregnant and well she did. And she was just going to go on with her life too. The thing I thought was that it was my responsibility, my child that "I" made. And well that child today is now 19 years old and I look into her eyes and know that she was/is not a mistake and I lover her with all my heart. Not to have been involved in her life would have been the worst. A child is a responsibility, a joy and a person. Only you will ultimately make the decision that will affect this child, you don't want to look back and wish that you made the right decision. The woman who will carry that child is important too and you CANNOT think of this as a disposable situation that will affect what/where and how your life should have turned out. I know it seems hard to change your whole life and dreams for what happened in a single night; but it has and you need to face that fact. Please don't leave that woman without a little support, love and understanding, you'll regret it the rest of your life. A real man takes responsibilities for his actions no matter how hard they may seem to bear. I know that some of this may seem harsh but I speak from experience, it will be a hard decision but it's the best decision you will make. Good luck and I only hope to make an impact and wish you all the best.

Love / Just started dating Polish guy - what is typical of a man from Poland? Cultural differences. [78]

polskilova

Wow I'd like to know how you are doing. I hope that you find someone who truly loves you......it appears that you are one of the special ones. The guy missed it, missed you a wonderful loving woman who could've been his. He will look back at the time your spent and wish for a second chance. Women like you are not easy to come by and men who aren't players appreciate them.

Off-Topic / Best Portable Pool and Swimming pool care in Poland at Auchan supermarket [4]

Yes you will need the filter, hopefully it is a efficient one. Be sure to keep it clean, it's probably the paper filter variety. The get clogged fairly quickly. Keep all the junk and vegetation that you can. All that stuff will eat up your chlorine. If a test kit is available get one to monitor the water quality. questions just ask.

Is the solar heater effective?

hopefully the solar pump is a by-pass pump and how efficient it will warm the water depends on how much surface area you have on the panels.

Should I buy a ground mat for the pool?

I'd get on only if it protects from puncturing the pool, it's a good idea prevent rocks and stuff from weakening the bottom.

FYI I was Chief of the Recreational Waters Program in Los Angeles County, California for 15 years responsible for inspection of 18,000 commercial swimming pools.

Life / Imagine a man killing 15 students in Poland. Would Polish flag be removed? [26]

Nathan we can't quote you, although we understand what you are getting at, the said flag, confederate, is NOT part of said know state, local federal government symbol. It's just some flag on a flag pole that should have been taken down long ago.The fact that its symbolism is tied to a time that America would rather forget than remember. The fact that he killed all those people is far more relevant that flag associated with a different time period. And your right with enough crazies running around it could happen but in Poland's case I bet it wouldn't be the Polish flag symbol but a "Swastika".

Life / Imagine a man killing 15 students in Poland. Would Polish flag be removed? [26]

Well it looks as though this topic is finally dead, I really don't know anyone who lives here in the US who would even bother flying a Confederate flag. Those that do are trying to hold on to a past that has been gone long ago. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Thus the Confederate flag is a relic and should remain in the past for everyone concerned.

Life / Life in Poland - feeling lonely and don't want to socialize much! (anyone feeling same?) [93]

Hi, I was living in UK for 20 years, before that I was living in Sweden for 10 years! I do have loads of friends in UK.

Hi Luke84,

Quite interesting about your situation, I am here in the US and maybe planning to see if I can survive there in Poland. Cheers to to having mastered the Polish language, not many UK or Americans can. I myself don't speak much Polish and my Polish wife keeps reminding me to get started learning or I will be lost if we settle over there. I'm living in big old nasty LA and would almost give anything to be where you are without the hustle and bustle of the city life. As long as I'm close enough to come and go when I need to, I think I'd be happy. The thing I'm dreading is that by living in LA we do have great weather. This winter, (I should say what winter?) there was no rain or cold weather to speak of at all just nice warm weather. It's about all that good around here, many Europeans and other want to come because of the economic stabability, which it has of course if you are qualified and can get a good job. I'm sorry that you feel isolated, I'd like to hear more as with your command of the language it would seem you'd be able to get on while you are there with the wifey. How is she about this? How is she dealing with it? My Polish wife seems to have adjusted here fairly well but I still have to deal with her Polish personality and it drives me crazy. I wish she was more western and more open-minded but she not and forget about trying to get her to change. As I've said before, " You can take the Pole out of Poland but never the Polish out of the Pole".

She has become a US citizen but I tell you if she couldn't have both she'd just be Polish. Now she can come and go as she pleases and we go to Poland almost every year and just got back in May. I'd love to hear more of your situation as it would help me with my decision to go there or stay here.

Cheers

Life / Life in Poland - feeling lonely and don't want to socialize much! (anyone feeling same?) [93]

but if you want that all the time, Poland is not the best place.

Hi Roger5, I hear you about the cold winters in Poland, I have been 3 times already but never in winter first in spring, May, September and this year in late April. My wife's mother has a house in a town called Sandomierz, I think it popular because of the Pope. It's fairly large house and I guess eventually my wife will end up with it if her mother passes. Right now we don't own a house and rent, so if we did we'd probably just stay here. I'm thinking that as my wife is really Polish, when her mom get on and can't get around I suspect my wife will want to be there for her. That's going to be soon I think. Her mom gets around but can't go up the stairs.

Our plan isn't to live in Poland for the winter but try and find someplace in a warmer area of the EU, we are looking at dubrovnik, Italy, Spain or France and buy a little house or apartment hopefully near the ocean. When we do it I will be retiring and hopefully have enough money to live on and travel.

I know people say that Poland is expensive and my wife does too but when you convert dollars to Zloty you are able to buy more, I hope the dollar stays strong against the EU so that when its time to buy a house over there it won't be so expensive. Houses her in California are very expensive but we are saving and have a good down and additional money with which to buy a house.....but traveling first, I need a long term resident permit for Poland before doing anything then we want to travel to places we think we'd like to live and rent a small place for a couple of weeks to get to know the area and then buy somewhere we really like. Not sure if it will work out but it would be nice to try.

Hi Luke,

It's good to hear from you, I feel like friends already. Luke I'm not young anymore, I'm in my 50's and thinking about retirement sometime in the next couple of years. I'm tired of what is happening in my job. I'm not really making a difference here so I am biding my time here. I work for the government so I am hoping that the amount that I receive will be enough to live comfortable. I have worked hard and want to enjoy the golden years of my life. I understand that you are young and can understand why you feel the way you do. I was in Warsaw in April and I was impressed at the speed of the city and the life that goes on there. Alot to do and see there, certainly a good night life and social life. When you are young, (I said I'm older not dead, I'm still active and run and play sports), you want that kind of life where you are always on the go but I'm kind of tired of it now and want the slow life that you have in a little willage. A life where I can go to the cities when I want to and enjoy life but then back to the peace and quiet.

I don't have any kids with my Polish wife even though she would have liked to have some. I was married before and have a real daughter who is 20 and a step daughter who is 22 and a son who is 25. I say step because while I am not still married to their mom I am still their father and raised them so they are mine whether I like it or not. We try to live a simple life and my wife work in a department store as a sales associate but she doesn't make much money but she saves it all and we live off my salary. My wife kind of like to shop but I think all Polish women do so it must be part of their make up.

Luke, how is your relationship with your wife? That is first and foremost. Is she beautiful like most of the Polish women? My girl is okay, she was a real looker when she was young, now she has a few pounds on and I'm trying to get her into shape but I'm not making it very far. She not fat just getting voluptuous, I prefer a skinnier girl. I think all the food in the USA is not good for her and we eat really healthy but it's taken it toll on her.

Right now it's really hot and sunny here what's the weather like in Poland?

Personally, should I not be black and African, I would never set a foot in Lagos - Nigeria.

Personally I'm black not African-American either and I would never set foot in Lagos either! I have been to little villages in Poland and quite frankly feel safer there then in my own town of Los Angeles, California.

USA, Canada / Is there any chance that I can go right now to the US and start a life over there? [19]

Tamarisk, I wholeheartedly agree with what you are saying, there is no bed of roses here, no hand outs, no stars walking down the streets of Hollywood. It's a rat race, (especially here in southern California), with no beautiful landscape that you'd find anywhere in Poland. It's all about trying to make as much money as you can as fast as you can. And if someone is able to take advantage of you, they will. No one wants to know your name here in America especially if your a foreigner unless your a beautiful blonde Polish girl who doesn't care about that fact. Tamarisk is right about Europe and how much nicer it is than it is here in America. Because it's a bigger place with more jobs doesn't make it better. There are so many homeless out of work people looking for hand outs, that's what you encounter most in Southern California. Most of the rich people insulate themselves away from the commoners in their big expensive cars, estates and member only clubs. and as Tamarisk stated correctly it not completely bad but if you are looking to come here unless you marry a US citizen and get a green card, (a long process where you'll find yourself standing behind Mexicans, Colombians and all the others poor nations) it will not be an easy process and if you are lucky enough to get a tourist visa for 10 years you can't work or study while you are here. My advise if you want to come to the US is to find a nice American girl here with a good job, fall in love and get here to start the immigration paperwork for a fiance visa.

No surprise the US never tops any of the life-happiness rating charts despite all the hype, Hollywood, Wall Street, Silicon Valley, Microsoft, Apple, etc.... as a general rule to is good to the wealthy, not so great for the average Joes Shmoes... but there are exceptions. One way to get in legally would be through an employer sponsored visa - hospitals do that for medical staff, for instance... do a bit of google research...

This is very true and a good assessment. My wife who is educated with a degree works at Sears for minimum wage here. I'm glad that I have a good job or we wouldn't make it.

Love / I'm a Polish girl (my boyfriend is British) and I'm proud [58]

Wulkan, it's my "Most" Polish girl not all the others, even though I know there are others Polish, girls, women, who fit the description or in this case that size. Given the state of affairs in the world, no country would fit InPolksa description that most women are "flat"

@Befranklin: how often do you buy bras in Poland? ;). Believe me, I know what they offer in stores.

Yes, I've bought one but I would agree with you that there isn't as good a selection in Poland as compared to here in the U.S., that's why a Victoria Secret store would probably do well in perhaps Warsaw or Krakow. Hmmmm, that's not a bad idea!

Love / I'm a Polish girl (my boyfriend is British) and I'm proud [58]

@Befranklin: you live in the US and I live in Poland where I do all my shopping so I got to know ;).

InPolska, you are right I currently live in the US but have been to Poland many times, I guess my wife is unusual and and her breast are on the larger side for normal breasts here in the US, (usually a "B" cup). I have bought bras for most of the women I have dated and find it a challenge to buy a good fitting lovely bra to handle my girls. I guess I'm biased with Polish women as it was really hard for me to find an unattractive woman in Poland, while here in the US we have many. I think one of the reason for this is that while I don't find youngish, (between tween - 50) Polish very physically active, they still tend to be less heavy, (thinner looking/normal) than women in the US. I think that is because of our overly processed foods and the amount we eat here so therefore Polish women tend to more attractive in that respect. Just my 2 cents.

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [901]

Warwicktiger is right here. Stalin held the chips, the Americans (with a President who was half dead and didn't last long after it) were unwilling to help Poland (if anyone 'sold' Poland, it was America) and Britain tried but were blocked by our American 'allies'. Plus the country was in ruins.

I'm an American and I agree with this statement. The only reason the US entered the war was if Germany wasn't defeated the US would be next. We were drug in kicking and screaming. While it's true we were fighting Japan, I believe Germany was a bigger threat. The US agreed to let Poland be given away to entice Stalin into the game because control of Poland was what they wanted or they take their toys and go home. Britain, France and the rest of Germany did not have enough to adequately defeat Germany without the necessary help from the US and Russia. All of Europe would have fallen had not Germany been defeated.

Life / Why are Polish people such hypocrites about immigration? [36]

Polish people bring their papist religion though, which is pagan. Not that it matters.
I am a Christian by the way even though my parents are from India.
Lebonese Christians are not welcome in Poland anyway.
Poland is hypocritical, and in truth, NOT a christian nation, but a pagan one.

This sounds very judgmental which isn't very "Christian" at all. I'd say your Christianity is worthless because who are you to judge another man walk with Christ.

Carly,

I Google'd your little town, (to us it's village actually), and it looks absolutely charming. I'm from L.A. and well everything is always greener on the other side. I'd give anything to be a smaller less busy atmosphere where things were slow and there's no traffic and you can breath fresh clean air. I hope that you are able to enjoy the solitude and clean country living for now at least.

Life / Poor hygiene of people in public places in Poland [46]

Wait, why would I use Poland to feel better about myself?
Um, I'm American?

I'm sorry to hear that, there are plenty of smelly Americans, maybe you just your nose so far up you American behind you really can't smell anyone else. I found the Polish people dress, act and smell much better than my fellow Americans. Obviously you are one of those privileged Americans who has never been on a public bus or train. You need to do some charity work so maybe you won't be so concerned how someone smells.

Where do you keep your Confederate flag? And if you didn't know it the the "South" in America is full of directly imported Africans, so you are already there. Did your daddy own a plantation?
