Food / Cooking Polish kiszka [99]

Having grown up in Chicago with Polish ancestors, we would get kiszka and eat it raw

What the hell is this stuff, anyway - must be some regional thing? The name itself in Polish is enough to make one vomit - especially a vegetarian ;-)

Law / Statistics of crime rates in Poland [37]

However, serious crimes like murders do not have as strict punishment as in the US

And that's the key issue. Plenty of inmates for minor offences, yet worst scum sentenced for murders, rapes, and assaults get off the hook just too easy... not sure why the entire legal system does not get a proper overhaul to remedy this - after all this is a fundamental issue.

Travel / Why do you visit Poland? [222]

the prices are much lower

The prices are also much lower in Vietnam or Thailand. This is simply because people's incomes there are much lower and so is their free spending money as compared to the countries you mention.

Poland, which nowadays is modern, developed with fantastic hotel infrastructure

It certainly gives that impression in some parts of major cities or expensive hotels, but just scratch the surface, another words live and work like an average local, listen to the media and the church rhetoric and the charm will quickly evaporate...

Travel / Driving UK - Poland (breaks) [3]

hrs.com
If you drove on a weekend, you could do it in one day.
When in Europe, drive like the disciplined Germans, i.e. do not block the fast lane and move to the outer lanes as soon as you can - you'll need to change lanes frequently.

Some of the services along the way are shabby/crowded on weekends - might be worth having your own food.
Have spare change for toilets (paid) at most station.
Fuel is cheaper if you plan your trip and buy it off the autobahn near the junction.

News / An article: NATO is the American occupation of Poland and Europe, by Mateusz Piskorski [233]

...Poland finally has a truly patriotic pro-Polish government...

That's what they would like us to believe. Just wait and see how the average Pole will benefit from having elected those lunatics who will run the country into the ground, turning it into the largest open air museum in EU.

Poland should get out and tell Merkel to go fly a kite.

And then what, genius? Become dependant on Mother Russia? No, thank you.

Language / Learn Polish or Russian [86]

Poland shares a border with Russia, yet its trade ties are tiny and falling all the time.

Bull. And you are forgetting Belarus and Ukraine - which will only grow.

Russia is not important or geopolitically relevant outside its small mind...

Bull^2. You are clearly talking nonsense - your Russo phobia is showing through.
Practical examples? One of my visits to Albania, I was stopped by the police. They did not speak English. Guess which language they new? Just last year in a Muslim populated area of Birmingham I accidentally overheard two men dressed and looking like they were fresh from Pakistan speaking... guess which language?

Study / Any information about Kujawy and Pomorze University in Bydgoszcz [11]

I will be Erasmus student in Kujawy and Pomoże University in Bydgoszcz. I wonder if you know anything about the university?

You will be studying there, so chances are you've applied there not by accident. And you're now asking others to tell you "anything about the university"? Sorry, but this is beyond me, asI would expect any half-awake student to do a rough search before committing to such an endeavour. Students these days... and with all the powers of google at their fingertips... ;-( Not to mention that you do not even state where you will be arriving from, what langiages you speak, what will you be studying, how long, what year, etc...

Travel / London to Krakow travel by Road [22]

Poland have the cheapest petrol prices all over Europe.

In EU you mean - although Belgium is not far behind, especially if you run on LPG (don't understand why the UK hasn't caught up).

Ferry crossing was a complete farce! We had a 6hr Immigration & Security wait in Dover.

This is *****, I hate it, I did a 2hr wait before Xmass and thought it was a killer - hope it does not happen again.

Language / Learn Polish or Russian [86]

What wrong with having a hatred of Russian?

With the greatest respect, let me turn this around for you: tell me what is good about your hatred of a language? Absolutely nothing (not to mention that it doesn't even make sense to hate a language).

Russian is being eradicated in both countries

It is very difficult to 'eradicate' a language that is the speakers' both native and official tongue (Belarus), and at least 30% ethnic Russians in Ukraine (probably 95% of Ukranian nationals know it), not to mention the Baltic states.

Food / Where to find a good bottle of wine in Poland? [18]

I have already tried Tesco and other supermarkets a number of times but no luck in finding a selection of 'dry' white or red wine

Pure nonsense - you must not be looking close enough for some reason then as Tesco for sure have got a wide selection of Pinot Grigio, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, etc. Just look or ask for 'Wino Wytrawne' under country and colour of choice.

Food / Polish Drink Vs Irish People [20]

Different tastes mate

Must be - last time I was there I couldn't believe how popular American Bud was amongst the young and hip... with all the great Guinness, Murphy's, ciders, etc. on tap why would anyone drink Bud is beyond me... must be marketing winning and/or the desire to appear different.

Travel / Fishing in Poland - where to go, what to catch? [74]

You are a foreigner and are asking legitimate and very important questions. Well, almost any Pole will tell you that actually there is no good reason for this state of affairs... other than lack of common sense. That's one of the major problems with Poland today. Lack of common sense and no faith in human decency - hence everything needs to be regulated by law to the nth degree. The bureaucrats will no doubt argue that's needed to protect the rights of the citizens, bla bla bla... does anyone actually believe it? I doubt it.

History / Poland and Britain started WW2 [307]

Perhaps, but let's not forget the effect of huge propaganda in Poland before the war, where people were made to believe that the Reich was really not as strong as they seem, and Poland stronger than in reality. I remember reading S. Lem's recollections of that period. Either case, I personally believe there was a serious case of wishful thinking versus betting on reality, i.e. everyone's out for themselves when the **** hits the fan...

Food / Polish Drink Vs Irish People [20]

Miller is the worst by far

As are all the beers sold in clear bottles - beer is sensitive to light and cannot stay good without having tons of chemical additives in it to stop that process. But the choice is yours.

Work / Salary for an architect with 3years experience in warsaw [37]

What is the approximate annual salary (British Pounds or Polish Zloty) of an Architect in Poland?

That's the problem with job adverts in Poland in general - will very rarely state the salary range, so until you know people who work in that industry, it is difficult to get a clearer picture, as "averages" can be tricky. I suspect it is similar to engineers - until you've got sufficient relevant, i.e. local experience, and get your professional license (equivalent to UK Chartership - except this is something that is actually regulated by Law in Poland), they will typically pay you as little as they can get away with and work you hard.

Real Estate / Buying a house in Poland. How realistic is the seller's pricing? Discount negotiation. [6]

All depends.
On properties which are popular and in demand, such as small to medium sized flats in major cities, the seller may insist on full list price if he feels that's what he could get and is not desperate to sell.

On the other hand, I've seen houses advertised for say 500k that eventually sold for 250k, so it all depends on the circumstances, the market, and how desperate the seller is.

Travel / What is your opinion of Gorzów Wielkopolski? [11]

No intention to be harsh - aside from being close to the German border, it is a town with a population of 120k (ranked 31st), and so naturally what it has to offer in terms of jobs and prospects for the young is proportional to and limited by it's size. What I meant is if you take the largest cities beside Warsaw: Wrocław, Kraków, Tri City, Poznań would be in the 1st league; then you have places such as Łódź, Szczecin, Katowice, Lublin, Bydgoszcz in the 2nd; then Rzeszów, Kielce, Toruń, Częstochowa, Białystok, Olsztyn, Radom in the 3rd... so really it is more like the 4th tier.
