Life / Spanish engineering student is moving to Bialystok - cost of life and information about the city. [38]

what do Polish people think of Spaniards

Most people, at least those following football a bit, will at least have heard of (Real) Madrid and (FC) Barcelona. But expect most people to be quite ignorant about the vast regional differences (so if you were, for instance, Gallician, be patient and ready to explain), not to mention politics or culture (corrida and flamenco maybe)... Most people do not realise Castellano is just one of the Spanish languages - but having said that, the good news is that it seems to be gaining popularity.

How is Bialystok? What can you tell me about they city? is it a good place to live?

Unfortunately, IMHO the town itself has probably got to be the most boring, provincial and depressing city for size in Poland. And cold winters, too. On the bright side, there are great nature escapes available all around the region. Also, recent grants form the EU have improved the city's road network - it has recently ranked #1 in terms of "driver friendliness" of all the 16 voivodship capital cities in PL.

Good luck with all!

UK, Ireland / What do Polish people think about Wales and Welsh people? [191]

I think there is a strong historical analogy between Poles and the Welsh when you recognise the domination of the more powerful and dominant neighbours throughout history... But frankly, many Poles are quite ignorant about the history of British Isles and its people... you have to realise how many, even those living in England, struggle to differentiate between the national identities in the UK... to most, UK=England, and so the people are therefore"English".

Niestety, bardzo dobrze odzwierciedla on typowe kompleksy i fobie polskiego społeczeństwa...

Polonia / POLES vs BULGARIANS [160]

Russia is the the worst number one enemy of Bulgaria. It has been historically a victim of Russian agression.

Let's keep things in wider perspective: do you really believe Russia did more harm than the Ottomans?

Food / Smalec in a Jar - how to make it better? [19]

it's basically a heart attack on toast

Believe it or not, to the contrary, it is now coming back as it now believed to be beneficial by some dieticians (when used in moderation of course)... I bet it is better than the highly processed, hydrogenated stuff such as margarine or such...

Radicalism is what is needed last. Going from one extreme to the next is not only plain dumb and irresponsible, totally disrespectful to the taxpayers' $, and accomplishes 3/5 of f*** all...

Real Estate / Who pays for the real estate agency's cost in Poland? [26]

Why do you want him to be paid?

If you go through an agent then you are understood to pay if you go for the place... I had several agents lately, and some have you sign a agreement you will not try to avoid their fees by dealing with the owner without them...

In the UK it is illegal for them to charge the tenant.

Really - since when? Last time I went through a major agent there was a fee....

Real Estate / Who pays for the real estate agency's cost in Poland? [26]

personally it seems unfair since the agents are working for the landlords.

Not working for, but simply representing... you should have asked when in doubt....

I guess we can't simply refuse to pay the real estate agent???

Let's be fair here - why wouldn't you? After all they've done their job by making arrangements and showing you around - were you expecting that they'll do that for fun??? That's how they make a living in case you were wondering...

Well, the agent is representing you also. You could ask them if the rent is negotiable, so no need to involve another entity...

Life / Why do Poles talk so badly about Poland? [25]

why do Poles talk so negatively about Poland to foreigners

Good question. I suppose when you consider that complaining forms sort of a national hobby, that does explain this attitude to a degree. On the other hand, perhaps being blunt is not all that bad for a healthy psyche? But there is also a lot of bitterness and negativity, most stemming from the fact that things 'could have been done better' when it comes to recent history, politics, and economics... I agree that this is something unique to this part of the world, there is not enough of the positivity for life regardless how hard it may be that one experiences in the southern countries... maybe it's the weather - but probably much more than that...

It will be good for cleaning toilets with, and that's being optimistic. Degrees in Poland taught in English are mostly worthless.

Back to your mantra, d? One can argue the ranking of the universities and the teaching methodology and the attitude of the professors at for some of the unis is not top class, but on the other hand there are many graduates who go on to become successful - regardless of how hard some individual with an inferiority complex would have you believe.

Poland's fine, it has good points it had bad points

Agreed.

don't eat flaki

And why is that? When done the way they should be, there are not many things better on a cold autumn/winter day...

Sadly a number of expats and lookers from afar on the forum are not happy with their lot.

+1 Too many grumpy/dissatisfied people on this forum - probably more with their personal lives than 'Poland' - and posting >80% of the time...

The most common problem seems to be that Poland does not conform to the standards and ideals that they have been used to in their own lands, and some think that Poland is in some ways backward because it does not choose to accept their ways or ideals.

Agreed.

Off-Topic / PF members MEETUPS.....everyone welcome! [52]

Yes, I think it would make sense to make these more localised given the fact that PF members live all over the world... For my part of the world I could suggest a central part of England... the (West) Midlands perhaps? But all depends where those willing to attend are based... just a thought...

3. Is buying a used car and maintaining it a costly proposition ? Or should I stick to public transport.

Definitely the used car prices are reasonable these days, especially if you look at it as a means of transport and not a status symbol... I would look for a French make - probably best comfort/technology/value combination on the market... best option would be from a private seller, original or long term owner...

People in Poland don't like buying second-hand cars

Where did you hear this one?

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [901]

It is truly most disgusting thing from destine to force Poland to be in alliance with the Britain

Nonsense. That's reality - ultimately one always looks after one's own interests first... And there is something about Britannia that makes her elegant and desirable even today... just look at the poor immigrants trying to get in by any means... despite the weather ;-) ...12C here today...

History / The memory about the Invasion of Poland 1939 - today's events [20]

Unfortunately, the choice of location for the ceremony was rather poor - it should have been held in Wieluń. This would have placed more emphasis on the barbarism of a regime like Nazi Germany (carefully planned and executed air raid on defenceless civilian population which destroyed the city in 75%) and what's more important cruelty of any war in general. As it happened, we got more of the same ideology stemming from PRL...

News / Poland's PiS party members and crime [332]

I hope that you condemn that among all polish political parties, or not?

The fact is they are the worst of the worst. They thrive on the lowest social instincts. And by their populist ideology they work very hard to undermine democracy in PL - just recall whenever they happen to loose in the elections it is always due to a anti-PiS vote rigging or other conspiracy. The disrespect many of the democratically elected officials, democratic institutions, the constitution. They really are the lowest of the low and should really be banned from politics.
