Love / Should I forgive my cheating Polish girlfriend? [73]

SMP. Reading your dilemma took me back several decades to a long-term relationship which was characterized by intense emotions, both positive and negative, and booze-fuelled histrionics. It was a toxic relationship and we should have ended it years before we did.

Do you know how many times you used the word love in your post? Is it love or obsession? Perhaps you need to take a complete break for a while. The fact that you have invested a lot in this relationship should not cloud your judgement. If it feels all wrong, it probably is.

Travel / Cottage in Zakopane, website suggestions? [6]

It was very nice. We booked domek 4, but when we arrived the owner showed us to another one, which he'd warmed up. Being a cantankerous old git, I insisted on the placed we'd booked. He said that the other one was warmer but I wouldn't listen. He was right. Domek four's fireplace is more ornamental than functional; most of the heat goes up the chimney. If that's the only one you can get, I suggest bringing an electric heater and wrapping up warm.

You may well have left it a bit late. There are, however, other, less popular places where you might find something.
It's been several years since I rented a domek for Christmas in Janów Podlaski. The place was fine and the owners provided unlimited wood for the fire. Nevertheless, after our first night I went and bought a fan heater in the nearest Biedronka.

They have very limited funds.

They should contact their insurer. They might be able to help in this emergency situation.

Life / Blasphemy not OK in Poland! [54]

I teach a module on astronomy and myth at my uni. Last week I made a joke at Apollo's expense about him being sneaky and manipulative because he persuaded Gaia to set a giant scorpion on Orion because the latter had slept with Apollo's sister Eos. He also tricked his other sister Artemis into shooting Orion. Yesterday we discussed Poseidon sending a flood and a sea monster to devastate Philistia just because his wife was offended by Cassiopeia claiming that she and her daughter were more beautiful than the Nereids. Luckily Perseus saved Andromeda from being devoured by Cetus, the monster, but Poseidon came in for a bit of stick from yours truly. Should I expect the Polish inquisition to come bursting through the door next Tuesday shouting, "Blasphemy!"?

Law / Real wages drop in Poland [28]

independent facts

There's a difference between a young backpacker turning up and finding a TEFL job and someone who has chosen to make a life here. The figures quoted would be fairly accurate for the former, but not the latter. Anyway, what's the point? This guy just hates Brits.

UK, Ireland / Do the poles like British culture [127]

these same "non-suicidal" people then proceed to tell other nations how they should have behaved in this or that situation.

It's very easy to give advice on bravery from behind a keyboard, isn't it?

I do not see major political changes taking place as a result

Perhaps because most people are more or less content with the way things are. Nobody is going to starve, education is free, healthcare is universal, the police do not opress them. Why should they revolt?

Oh, there's another thing. How would you go about mounting a popular insurrection on a small, mostly flat island? It's always been that way. It doesn't make the people placid, just not suicidal.

News / Lech Walesa is not a democrat and this statement proves it. [24]

Living in trees when we built cathedrals.

I didn't know you were a racist. Africans never lived in trees; monkeys do. Is that what you mean?
btw people in China and India (as well as parts of Africa) had highly developed societies when we Europeans were painting ourselves blue and eating berries.

Travel / Is there a healthy expats scene in Poland? (drinks, food, golf, etc.) [143]

As far as I know there are a few Montessori schools in Warsaw.

Does anyone know whether or not there is a central Montessori governing authority which authorizes the use of the name and supervises each of its schools? Or can anyone use the name?

Travel / Driving from UK to Poland in Christmas Time - winter tyres? [46]

Keeping your fingers crossed on Polish roads in winter is not wise.

The decent tyres like Dunlop Winter Sport 3D cost around 90-100 each

So, 400PLN. You probably couldn't fill up your car twice for that. Don't pinch pennies when it comes to road safety. btw Forget about chains.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2971]

So go watch a 6-week ultrasound scan, see the little bean jumping up and down with life, and say it isn't alive.

Is it a little bean or a little baby?
I don't want to trawl through pages and pages of emotional breast-beating again so I may have missed the anti-choice lobby's views on IVF, a procedure in which some fertilised eggs are discarded.

Yes, the embryo has life, and I believe it's the woman's right to choose what to do with her own body, including terminating that life. Anything else puts a bundle of cells over the rights of a woman.

Love / I live in Holland and i never meet a good polish guy. [33]

Who is Ivor Cutler?

When I meet somebody who has never tasted Champagne, I envy them because I will never again have the joy of first discovering it. That's how I feel now.

I am a little too, ahem, fatigued, to post a link but there's loads of Cutler Stuff on YT. Start with "I'm Walking to a farm". If, after listening to it, you find that you both don't understand it but at the same time understand it , you may want to explore the mind of the late, great Ivor Cutler.

This is by far the best thread I've ever seen on PF. It is perfect in every way. Forum historians should save it now. It could be the centerpiece of your PhD.

I mean that most sincerely, folks. Perhaps it's because I've been listening to Ivor Cutler tracks for the last hour.

Language / how to say "on" in this case? [3]

She's on the fire just after you put her there, like you would a witch or, perhaps, a Catholic.
A little later she'll be in the fire, where, some would say, she belongs.
She's on fire means that a) her flesh has combusted, or
b) She's got the hots for you whitopian1

Life / Poles and the temperatures they heat their homes [36]

There must be a logical explanation to the reason.

If people think they are going to get sick from drinking cold liquids, they probably will. In Turkey some (most, actually) people think that sitting in a draught will make them ill. Yes, of course it'll give you a stiff back if you sit with the wind on your back, but a lot of people extrapolate to a ridiculous extent. I've been on buses that were like tandoors but with windows secured shut with jubilee clips. And everyone chain-smoking. Perhaps things have changed since I was there, but I remember stern advice against using fans.

My local cafe turns the fridge off in September. When I once complained that the drinks were warm I was told, "It's winter!" with the unspoken implication, "you fool."

Warm Fanta, mnyam.

Life / Poles and the temperatures they heat their homes [36]

On Tuesday I went around the corner from work for lunch. It was a nice day and not at all cold so I went wearing a shirt, no sweater. People on the street, all wrapped up in coats and a few in hats, were gawping at me. It's mid-October so it must be cold, right? I also get strange looks when I wear sunglasses on bright winter days.

Life / Poland: When usually is the best time to change from summer to winter tyres? [42]

pretty much crammed full of cars all changing at the same time

...and the garage guys letting their friends jump the queue (almost drove me to murder once or twice).

what's the legality of pulling out the fuse for a few months?

Why not? You can drive an old car without it. I won't bother. I'll just creep along like a guy-in-a-hat!

One survey was cited showing that since his death a steady 94% of Poles said they recognise him as the surpeme authority.

What does this statistic mean? Supreme authority on what? He's dead.
