Language / Should I learn Polish or she learn English? [83]

Polish is extremely difficult to learn, I've been learning for about 3 years andI still sound like a retarded turnip.

You (westerners) all do.But no worries you won't be taken for a retard unless in addition to sounding like a retard you also look like one.

Real Estate / Can foreigner buy apartment in Warsaw, Poland? [39]

Ah yea, it's pure dodge and I think the 2 pairs of them are clowns for doing it.

Why?It's called "Rent till you own" in the US and it can be better deal than the mortgage. It is simply a different way of paying for something.Instead of borrowing money from the bank you basically borrow from the owner.Treat rent as interest on loan and there you go.Of course there also tax issues, value of money in time and so on involved but everything can be calculated.

News / Poland and Germany should unite, says Lech Walesa [113]

I severely doubt they'd want to prop up another bottomless cash hole.

They do or they don't it doesn't matter, they HAVE TO pay for what they have stolen and destroyed during last world war.I am still waiting for payment for the livestock and produce they have stolen from my great grandparents. And to completely equel the score I guess I will have to kill one of them like they killed my great grandfather in Dachau.

History / Terrible past for the Jews in Poland? [930]

Some of us would like to keep it that way,

You are not Polish so you should refrain from speaking in the name of Poles. Now, I am Polish and I think we the Poles will be much better off not dealing with Jews at all as we don't need them for anything.

History / Terrible past for the Jews in Poland? [930]

People, in all fairness, we all know that both sides, treated each other poorly at times.

True but if you Polish and point it out you are an antisemite!

Language / Differences in Polish and English idioms [69]

Polish: "Między młotem a kowadłem"

English equiv: "Between the devil and the deep blue sea"

never heard that. Shouldn't be "Between rock and a hard place"?

I recently heard a funny idiom in Polish: "Once in a Russian year" which in English sounds Once in a blue moon :-)
I wonder where did it come from...

Russia has introduced Gregorian calendar only in 1917 while Poland and most countries did that in XVI century.Russian year was longer, for instance Russian October revolution happened in November according to Gregorian calender.

Life / The Best Things About Poland [24]

Did you know that the British invented the modern army salute?

Is that right?I always thought it originated from medieval times.
2 fingers salute caused Polish soldiers some problems during WW II:
"The two-fingers salute caused problems for Polish units serving with the Allies on the western front during World War II. Allied officers, seeing what they perceived as a Cub Scout's salute, thought that Polish soldiers either were deliberately being disrespectful, or were intoxicated. As a result many soldiers were arrested, until the misunderstanding could be explained. This led to the temporary use of the full hand salute when saluting foreign officers"

I never, until now, thought of those two Army-related items you cited as distinctive nor stylish.

Rogatywka is indeed stylish IMO.

History / Polish military uniforms - collar markings [74]

Thanks Jason and Grubas - exactly what I was talking about.

No problem dude. The color of the collar indicated branch of army.

Grubas, yours show the thicker bar, which I suspect is far more modern. Sometimes the bar is hollow, with further lines/scrollwork within that hollow section.

They were slightly changing between 1919 and 1939.Here is link to Wiki:

History / Polish military uniforms - collar markings [74]

Is this what you talking about? From wiki:Distinguishing mark of the Polish soldier was also silver tubing on the collar: wide for the generals, slightly narrower for officers and narrow for private.Seems to be purely decorative and I think it looks good.

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

Were the Russians waiting on purpose or was this just accident?

Do you think they didn't allow US and British planes with supplies for Warsaw to use their airfields by accident?

It surely was a suicide plan but so was the uprising in 1944 (I already explained it)

No you didn't.Anyway,I will repeat,in April/May 1943 the Germans were preparing offensive in the Ukraine and the outcome of war wasn't decided yet while in Jun/July 1944 the Germans were in full scale retreat.Kind of difference I would say.

most of them in Warsaw were Poles (Polish citizens anyway)

Polish citizens,ok but it doesn't mean Poles.

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

Common sense, just compare both political systems, Poland before WWII and the SU.

And?What does it have to do with anything? Was Great Britain or US a commie country in 1941-1945?They were not acording to my knowledge yet they were allied with SU.

so if you did it together in 1943,

Dude in april/may 1943 Soviet army was deep in the Ukraine and battle of Kursk hasn't even started yet.Together or not it would be a suicide, plain and simple.

They were also Poles (Polish Jews).

Some were some were not. That's off topic anyway.

of course I know but it was clear, they wouldn't help you.

How was it clear?I am telling you Soviet planes were dropping leaflets and Soviet radio was calling Warsaw people to rise so how was it clear?Post any western intelligence report saying that Soviets will stop their offensive.Just one.

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

What was the point of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944? (same point)

The point was to free Warsaw.

the chance to succeed was exactly the same in both cases

You are really ignorant.Do you know where was Soviet army in April/May 1943?You don't?I thought so.Check and come back.In 1944 Soviet army was on the other bank of Vistula and nobody knew they are going to stop and let Germans massacre uprising. Before it even started Soviet planes were dropping leaflets calling Warsaw people to rise up and saying that they are coming to help.Even western allies were surprised when Soviets stopped offensive and did not want to allow US and British planes with supplies for Warsaw to use their airfields. And you are saying that "the chance to succeed was exactly the same in both cases"?Get some education dude.

They knew that they can't count on any help from the Soviets.

They knew? How did they know it?

The last thing Stalin wanted, was Poland from before the WWII.

We know it now but it wasn't so clear in 1944.

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

Why is it dumb?

Because what would be the point?

because both Uprisings didn't make any sense since it was clear that there was no realistic chance for success.

From today's perspective you are right, but we have knowledge those in 1944 did not have.Unlike Warsaw uprising 1943 Ghetto uprising was just a gesture of despair without any, zero, null, nada chance to succed.

since it was clear that there was no realistic chance for success?

How WAS it clear in 1944?

News / Does Polish hotel have right to turn down Americans and Israelis? [73]

Hmm..A friend from Lezajsk told me about how Israeli and American Jews (largely Orthodox) come there for a pilgrimage to visit the tomb of Elimelech at the Jewish cemetery. They stay at the local hotels, completely trashing the place, showing absolutely no respect.

Same in Krakow!

I notice that they charge 60 pln for guests from inside Poland

It is his property and he can do with it whatever he wants to.And we can talk about Single European Market when Poles will earn what other Europeans earn.

Does anyone know what the holiday centre's called, so we can name and shame,

You can try all you want just first read comments under this news.Overwhelming majority of commentators support this guy and so do I.

Love / Egyptian guy with Polish girl - is it normal? [18]

@clearly

You are a muslim nut dude.Leave her alone and find yourself some muslim chick.Women in this country (Poland) go out alone or with girlfriends and I totally understand her that she doesn't want to haul you everywhere she goes. You may think you are caring and supportive but to us Polish you are a controlling freak.

News / Does Polish hotel have right to turn down Americans and Israelis? [73]

Why would he not let Americans in?

It's most likely about American Jews.

Second, Israeli tourists, especially youth, are believed to like demolishing sites where they stay.

They are taking revange on Poland for murdering Jews (that's the way they think in their sick minds).
But what Rzecznik Praw OBYWATELSKICH has to do with it.They are not citizens of Poland so he should find something better to do.

Work / Average earnings and cost of living in Warsaw? [42]

Will I be able to live in Warsaw, Poland on $ 1,200.00 a month, American?

You may have a hard time when USD drop to 2 PLN like it did in 2008.

2.2

I think 1.99 was the lowest point.
