Genealogy / Are Silesians people German/Germanic? [178]

After a member of your family will die in a terrorist attack in their own peaceful country then you'll start understanding.

HAhaha!!!

I'm from Ireland sweetheart, I can teach you all about terrorism.

Now, either get back on topic or FO

What else Silesians can be if not Slavs?

Celts, I've just shown you that, if you really want this to be the year of facts then accept them :)

Genealogy / Are Silesians people German/Germanic? [178]

If the Silesians are of Celtic origin, then by this logic so are most Germans aka Rhinelanders and Bavarians:-)

Yea, that's true

Sure, we're all immigrants really anyway, I don't get why people don't like immigrants, if your family have been in the same place since the start you're immensely inbred

Food / Christmas pudding in Poland [22]

Don't be minding them food snobs :D :D :D

Here's an authentic Wexford recipe:

175g self raising flour, which is impossible to get here, so get the flour that used for cakes not the crap they use for pierogi

Teaspoon of mixed spice, teaspoon of ground cinnamon, half teaspoon of nutmeg.
225g white breadcrumbs
350g of brown sugar
450g currants
225g raisins
225g sultanas
125g mixed peel
125 g cherries
225 dried peaches
100g mixed nuts
50g of ground almonds rind and juice of an orange
225g margarine melted and cooled (3 large eggs some brandy or whiskey 275ml of stout beaten together).

To Make put flour and spices in a large bowl
Add breadcrumbs, Sugar, almonds, nuts, orange peel and juice and cherries and fruit
Mix well together
Make a well in centre and mix in the cooled margarine and egg mixture
Leave to stand overnight as the mixture thickens overnight then put into greased bowls
To cook: place bowl in large pot with water coming about 3/4 to the top of the bowl, cover the bowl with greaseproof paper, bring water to boil and then simmer for about 8 hours

When done throw another shot of whiskey on it and you're done

Happy cooking

Life / Opłatek, not presents, epitomises the true Polish Christmas spirit [85]

Any of those who do evil in this lifetime will get away with it.

Life is meaningless, embrace it and live life like every day is your last, (I think your King of Poland Mr Jebus said that once) that's freedom, not my problem if you can't live in the moment

We need an excuse to be nice to each other!

Not to Polly, he's a waste of oxygen

than because Santa is 'watching'

Ah, but God is watching. He's all around you, like that Wet Wet Wet song.
It's something the Poles and us Irish share. Repressed Catholic guilt; you're simply guilty by being born and God watches everything you do all the time, until you die and then he judges you on how you behaved while shouldering a monkey on your back.

No thanks :D

That in itself is a really weird concept

Definitely. Being watched meant I was afraid to wank for years and years ^_^ And then I thought sure if he wants to watch he can watch, I'm not the pervert here ;)

I feckin love Christmas, probably the only time of year when people are nice to each other, it's wonderful and Christmas is what you make of it, it can be commercial, or traditional or both it's really up to you. We used to be forced to spend time in nasty inlaws and all the crap that goes with that so we stopped and we do things the way we like it; if you're doing things on Christmas you don't like doing, just stop doing them and enjoy the festivities.

Life / Opłatek, not presents, epitomises the true Polish Christmas spirit [85]

Maybe the Christ Child will bring me one for Christmas

Santa Claus brings presents.
Y'see, baby Jesus and Jesus the man aren't two different things, they're the same, so they cannot exist as different states at the same.......well, on a quantum level they can, but the way we humans in this 3rd dimensional (some argue 4) of reality experience time then the baby Jesus and Jesus the man cannot be two different things, so if Jesus brings you presents on Christmas (he doesn't) then it's Jesus the man, not baby Jesus.

Anyway, please enjoy this video:

-Hey kid you want some tasteless bread or a new Playstation?
-To be honest Pan Stranger, Mom told me not to speak to strange men at the bus stop.....
-Oh of course, I'm sorry.....but I need your opinion becasue there's an idiot internet troll that's annoying us.
-OK then, Pan Stranger...sure, I'd prefer a Playstation, opłatek isn't even a toy, it's some weird kind of bread that they use in churches. Catholics pretend it turns in Jesus' body.

-Really? Wow, I didn't know that, that's kind of weird
-It sure is Pan Stranger, here's my bus, goodbye and Happy Christmas
-Happy Christmas to you too young man, I hope Santa/Angel/Baby Jesus or whoever brings the presents to you on Christmas brings a Playstation

News / CO2 emissions in Poland. Should Poland go nuclear or stick with clean coal technologies? [85]

solar wind

Sure bro

Wind power generates 140% of Denmark's electricity demand
theguardian.com/environment/2015/jul/10/denmark-wind-windfarm-power-exceed-electricity-demand

On Sunday, May 8 Germany produced so much electric power that prices were actually negative. As in, customers got paid to use the electrical system. In total, 87% of the power produced in Germany was made at solar, wind, hydro and biomass plants during that day.

fortune.com/2016/05/11/germany-excess-power

Cool bro

We do get about 20% of our electricity from wind, but more from natural gas I think

'twill continue to go up though, mighty to see loads of wind farms going up all the time around the coast

News / Kukiz and Petru - newly emerging political stage in Poland [57]

His support has been inching down towards the 5% threshold

I really don't understand the need for that rule, I think it's pretty stupid.
How can you have a proper democracy if you can't have independent politicians in parliament.....oh wait, for a second I forgot where I was living :D :D :D

Classifieds / Random Classifieds Ads Poland [261]

Can someone help

Go to booking or Airbnb and search for locations close to
Pyrzowice

Katowice airport isn't actually anywhere close to Katowice city (45min drive), the airport is in Pyrzowice

You'll be in the middle of nowhere but you'll be close

Closet towns to look in would be Dabrowa Górnicza, Bedzin or Sosnowiec....but for the love a jaysus don't stay in Sosnowiec it's a dump

Or you could just stay in Kato and get the airport bus every day

Law / Not having a car insurance for a little while in Poland [13]

I'm wondering if I can just postpone paying for a insurance renewal.

You can postpone the non-compulsory aspect, AC or OC, I always mix them up, call or email your company and sort it with them.
Doubtlessly you'll get differing opinions here because not everyone is insured by the same companies.

I wouldn't do it though, if your car is robbed or damaged you'll get nothing and Polish insurance is pretty cheap anyway, better safe than sorry imo

News / "A merciful heart can share its bread with the hungry and welcome refugees and migrants" Pope Francis [89]

proof the "world is at war" but that it was not caused by religion

Then he is very much wrong
There are two roots of evil in this world: greed and religion
All wars can be traced back to both

I think Frankie seems like a nice enough man though, I like the way he had a dig at the Polish bishops while here, saying something like there were spoiling themselves living lavish lifestyles. Chairman Jarek's lapdog Prime Minister described him yesterday on radio as 'simple'

Study / Studying in Poznan for an Arab student. [25]

Do you honestly think that a skinhead is going to ask you what religion you are before he punches you?
Is he going to ask this in Polish/English or Arabic?

Anyway, Warsaw has loads of foreigners living there, you'll be grand.
But by some pepper spray in case

News / Russian criticism of Poland - Soviet war memorial removal [332]

*I see no reason to demolish Palace of Culture and in fact think it's a moronic idea

Yea, I really don't understand people that say this, it's such a cool building.

All the most iconic buildings in Dublin are Cork were built by the British, d'ya think we tore them down? Did we fuq, we moved in and made them our own :D

today's Russians and Russia is not responsible for a single crime committed 70 years ago

Same for the Germans

I will say this though, I knew many Germans before I left Ireland and they really carried a lot of guilt for what their grandparents did. From the Russians I've met they don't have this issue.

War memorials are to the soldiers, not to their politicians

I totally understand why they're bring removed.
In Ireland we had loads of British statues that meant nothing to the people.
Nelson's Column being the most famous....probably becasue it was bombed. There was a massive Queen Victoria stature for years outside Leinster House, and she hung round like a bad smell until the 1980s when the Irish government finally offloaded it to the shackle draggers down under.

The irony of the British Queen being "transported" to Australia by ship was not lost on the Irish media

Gotta love the irony of that :D
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Queen_Victoria,_Sydney

The Canadians said they'd take it before that but didn't want to pay :)

However, when it comes to statues that commemorate soldiers that's a different kettle of fish and I agree with jon & Lenka wholeheartedly, thankfully the vast majority of ordinary, decent people think the same.

Don't forget Poland has something a bit like that already, in Kozlowce, near Lublin.

Oh didn't know that, if I'm ever in that neck of the woods I'll look it up
