Life / Health system in Poland one of the worst in Europe: report [78]

Agree with that Terri - ultimately the system will not improve until doctors feel they have good prospects. That really means more tax or a total reform of ZUS.

If you say Dirk that it is a safety net, then you are looking at this with Anglo-Saxon eyes. It is supposed to be a public health service for which all working people contribute. Probably 80 percent of people in Poland have only a few hundred zloty spare income at the end of the month at the moment - they simply don't have the option to splash out say 500 or 600 zloty for a private specialist whenever they want to save a few days wait

News / EU triggers Article 7, could strip Poland of voting rights [91]

Exactly the same arguments came from Brexit supporters - that Britain was too big a market fot the other 27 to ignore.

18 months later the EU has called their bluff and told them no access to the single market without accepting EU law. Now the Brits are begging to be allowed to stay.

And that was Britain which has far more leverage than Poland would

But That time will never arrive because the money that we get is not just what is handed out in the form of grants, the mutual trade between the 28 countries of the EU makes them all richer, all safer and all with better prospects.

Unless you think you're better off just trading with Hungarians. By the way, if the Hungarian opposition can get its act together over the next six months I have a good chance of taking away Orbans absolute majority.

News / EU triggers Article 7, could strip Poland of voting rights [91]

It is more subtle than that. I think the perfectly sensible point that people have is that the yes/no referendum is not suitable to extremely complex issues, with literally thousands of hidden consequences and something that is irreversible. There is also the problem that the people who call the referendum we are not willing to implement his results.

Yes - but given no president can serve more than 2 life terms there is an excellent check and balance on judicial appointments

Unlike PL where Ziobro could prosecute Tusk and have him tried by PiS appointed judges

It is not because in the US judges get life time terms and thus are appointed and confirmed by different presidents and senates over many years.

The American Bar Association has strongly criticised the Polish actions, which have no parallels in the developed democracies

Work / What is the average accounting/auditing salary in Poland? [42]

Are you an EU citizen ? If so then you might get something in a back office but probably nothing very stimulating.

If you are not then being honest you will struggle to get a work permit without being qualified (probably full Certified or Chartered accountant - not sure about CIMA)

Real Estate / Farm for sale in Poland - how to find a buyer from other country? [12]

They are not able to buy and would not get away with the dodge of using a Sp z o.o.

There are very few people with a few million euro to spare who would be reading this forum. You would be best off tto use a proper broker.

Want to sell your farm ? Your pool of buyers is existing Polish farmers or the church.

News / The quality of Polish media coverage [48]

So don't watch in that case. This is a free country. Your wife and kids might be a bit upset because that's where most of the interesting programs are. Or maybe you don't have any family ? It does seem that most of the posters on here with your kind of views tend to be single guys.

Work / Poland's Internships for English Speakers w/ Polish A2 [2]

Do you have Polish citizenship? If so then your best bet would be to email the big logistics companies and some of the provate logistics schools and tell then what you are looking for - you could also try big retail companies. There is a huge shortage of people with any logistics knowledge at the moment in Poland so you have an outside chance of doing that.

Few companies run formal internship programs - only really banks et cetera.

If you are not a citizen then it's going to be difficult because no one will really want the hassle of getting you a work permit.

News / EU confirms it will take action against Poland over court reforms [554]

Its not as simple as saying everyone has one equal vote - in Poland many votes can be wasted on parties that dont make the threshhold. In the US then your vote has different weight if you are in a swing state.

Winning an election and implementing election promises like the bank tax is fine. However things like the media law and the takeover of the election committee were not mentioned.

News / Did George Soros want to destroy Poland with his economic shock therapy? [87]

That looks quite like a video of some people protesting with a poorly overlaid track of "George Soros where's our money" !

People protest against Trump because that is their right and because he is a moron. Not because they are paid to do so. PiS on the other hand are busing their supporters into town to clap for him and presumably look for the nearest place for a comfortable toilet stop and cup of tea while their varicose veins are playing up.

Life / Why do so many Polish strive to be accepted by the West? [78]

Yes the west does not like criticism but it does not responding by jailing, mudering and poisining critics like the Russians do.

As for Russia being more spiritual than the west i have never noticed that on my visits. Unless by the East you mean Nepal or Tibet ?

Life / Why do so many Polish strive to be accepted by the West? [78]

The German invasion did start 17 days before the soviet one so i guess you are right.

Queing for oranges is only the most evocative symbol of the failed state - add in empty shelves, secret police, dictatorship, lack of free speech and terrible living standards. Thats what happens when you have to live like Russians

Life / Why do so many Polish strive to be accepted by the West? [78]

But many of them know the rationale, because they can remember Soviet rule. They can remember standing in line in the snow at Christmas for a few bitter Cuban oranges. Nothing on the TV, in fact no TV. Plenty of flaki.

Life / Why do so many Polish strive to be accepted by the West? [78]

I think the main reason that they strive to be accepted by the west is that the 40 years of rule from the east between 1945 and 1989 was a disaster.

It started with rapes and destruction, confiscation and murder and it finished with Poles having to queue in the cold for every day necessities.

Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

Yes it's important but there are threads about it - your obsession with it is spoiling a nice forum - just like the flame wars between Harry and Polonius used to. Im sure there are other forums just dedicated to that kind of stuff ?

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2707]

Cops killed by firearms in the US last year - 160. Rest in peace.

Cops killed in Poland - 3. Also rest in peace.

If you were here and listened to the radio you would know that that this killing last week has created a long debate here about access to firearms and whether the automatic weapons came from. If that was in the US it would be forgotten by the time the nascar race started on TV.
