News / Poland's supreme administrative court rules against RHD cars [57]

Poland has a terrible amount of road accidents.

I agree, but the cause is reckless and aggressive drivers and poor roads. In most continental EU countries you can register a right hand drive car and the rate of accidents is lower..

Bullfrog, Why don't Ireland and Britain just change?

That would be the right thing to do (and it is feasible, Norway did it in the 50s or 60s, I can't remember), but one of the charms of Britain (for Ireland, I don't know..) is that it does things differently from the rest of Europe..

News / Poland's supreme administrative court rules against RHD cars [57]

Right hand drives in a left hand drive country are too dangerous for overtaking.
I believe it is a safety issue rather than anything else and Poland is trying to minimize accidents

Then why is it possible in most other EU countries (France, Germany, Belgium..) which have a much better road safety record than Poland?

News / GDP of Poland.. 338 billion pop-38.5mil Cali GDP 1.7 Trillion pop-37.7mil [70]

Poland is also carrying a fairly high public debt load.

In 2008, it was lower than in most EU countries (incl Germany, UK or France):
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_the_European_Union

In 2009, it is expected to increase to 51,7%, but will remain more than 20 points below the EU average (73%) and far lower than in the US (90%)..

How does Poland calculate unemployment?

In fact, Polish rules for calculating unemployment are harsher than EU rules and lead to higher figures.. For example, the latest available Eurostat figures (dec 2009) show 8,9% unemployment for Poland versus 11,9% published by GUS!!

Travel / Fish and Chips in Warsaw [53]

I think the UK has some of the best sea-food in the world.

Maybe, but you need to have people to appreciate it. Unfortunately british palates , with their love for processed/industrial food, are not properly trained to appreciate it..

News / Poland - Third World Country?? [300]

convex

Why a slur? If I had the choice, I would not have minded being born French (like 20% of Brits according to a survey done a few years ago)

Life / Horribly cold in Krakow at the moment , how do you cope with such temperatures ? [124]

Ha...well that certainly does not apply to my place...the thermometer in my other room says its zero degrees in there , its not so much warmer in this one where i am huddled over a small electric fire as i type , dressed like a dam eskimo....The water has frozen up

Not that I want to rub it in, Wildrover, But I"m typing this in front of a roaring fire and the temperature in the room is a healthy 23 Celsius.. At least your Internet connexion has not frozen up!

Life / Horribly cold in Krakow at the moment , how do you cope with such temperatures ? [124]

You can check the statistics, even the average life hope is very low
compared to rest of Europe. Because rheumatism and pneumonia are
very usual, because of such low temperatures 4 - 5 mnths each year

Nonsense. Whilst extreme cold does generate extra deaths, the chief reason for Poland's low life expectancy is the diet (too rich in pork, grease, butter..) which generates a very high incidence of cardio vascular disease

Work / Polish qualifications, what are they worth ? [137]

acquaintance of mine works in ZUS, had to pay ????PLN after successful interview.

Well, why doesn't he/she goes to the cops? I have been living 5 years in Poland, never had to dole out any greaser/bribe (and never was requested one).. Whereas in the 8 years I lived in London, I had (british) builders explicitely request cash payments...

Travel / Best way to go from Warsaw to Varberg (Sweden) [7]

Here it is: my darling girl has asked me to take her to a rock concert end of July in Varberg (Sweden). I am wondering what is the best way to travel there: plane to Stockholm and then rent a car or train or car to the north then ferry to Sweden or Copenhagen and then car to Varberg. Any Swedes living in Poland who might help? Thanks

Work / Polish qualifications, what are they worth ? [137]

Nika, I agree, HG, you should rename yourself PG (provocative George).

Polish qualifications are good/very good, and are starting to be recognozed outside of Poland. In the (multinational) company I work for, we go regularly on Polish campuses to hire Polish graduates not only for our Polish operations but also for London , Paris, New York...

Life / Polish and Czechs [190]

i'm Polish and i don't view Czechs superior to us in any way

GDP/hab in Czech republic is 30-40% higher than in Poland

.also an average Czech city doesn't differ from an average Polish cit

As a foreigner, It seems to me that when you cross from Poland to Czech, the villages become more neat. Generally, the road and urban signage is also less shoddy than in Poland, more "in ordnung"..

Prague is one of the prettiest cities i have ever seen.

Agreed. For me, Prague and Paris are the most beautiful cities in Europe

If there was a Polish, Czech and Slovak sub-union within the E.U. that acted as one state that could ease things in this regard.

That is unlikely to happen. Remember, Czech and Slovak used to be one, now there are two of them. The most distinct characteristic of Slavic people is that they like to argue for minor issues.. In addition, Czechs don't like Poles for many reasons, one being Cieszyn (the Poles don't like being reminded of this, because it somewhat questions their "victim" status of WW2), the other being that when the Prague spring broke out, Mocow sent Warsaw pact troops to quash it and among those troops, there were many Poles- admittedly this has nothing to do with true Poland..

News / Poland's Economy Is No Joke [63]

Currently there is really HUGE develompent going on concerning highways (one of the reasons why polish economy took crisis hit relatively well). There is silent revolution going on (especially since not so long ago law concerning tenders changed). Not much people is paying attention to that (here you can find everything):

that's right, and that in turn will boost growth in the coming years in poland

News / Freezing weather in Poland, 42 people dead in winter freeze... and no-one cares? [140]

I am looking forward to some real freezing weather this week end. On weather.com and bbc weather they are predicting only -18C to -20C but on Yahoo they are saying -34C! I hope the latter is right and I can beat my personal best (-29C in winter 2005, the year that I arrived in Poland)!

Life / Do you think a smoking ban would be a good thing in Polish restaurants and Bars? [217]

He said public 'areas' are places where you don't have to buy anything.

Based on this logic, your home is a public area (unless you charge your friends when you invite them!)...Another weird definition.. A public area is a place where the general public can go, and that's it.. Nothing to do with buying or not buying...

News / Poland's Economy Is No Joke [63]

Bollocks, these tv programmes focus on current problems..

Exactly, I agree. The case HG was referring to is just an example of one company which went bust, it cannot be generalized

Love / I want my Polish gf to live with me but she says life here is too hard [31]

I'm a baker and I cant move,i have two children and i'd rather die than leave them, she knew when we first met that I had kids.

If you're a good baker, move with the whole family to Poland, bakers are in demand.. I know one of them (albeit french) who started his business a few months ago in Warsaw (Nowy swiat) and he is already doing a roaring trade..

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

One thing I noticed time and time again is that Poles do not wait for everybody to be served before starting to eat.. On the other hand, men are much more polite/gallant with women compared to the West (they hold doors, pass coats..)

Life / Reasons for moving to Poland [291]

Denmark is still on the crown

oops, good spot, Convex

The thing about Luxembourg is that it's very expensive

I don't find it much more expensive than neighbouring countries.. and the figures I referred are pps, ie corrected for differences in cost of living
