Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

Sticky means that it's always on top of the forum board. In most forums there's a special "sticky" section with topics that regard certain reappearing subjects, they usually include some kind of a tutorial, and advices, hence it's a shame to loose them over time.

Not to dash away from the main topic, I'll have to say I was really fond of my teachers teaching methods in Gliwice, in the British Council English school, he's name was Jamie, he was a scottish expat and he was really creative, every lesson included some kind of a game, story telling all mingled with standard teaching lessons ( every person has to do his amount of formal and informal writing stuff ), a really great and interesting formula

News / Juwenalia - holidays for students in Poland (updated) [20]

I was attending few "Juwenalias" in Gliwice, organized by Silesian University of technology, they are called "igry" here. I have to say that for most students it's just an occasion for heavy over the top drinking ( well actually every event is ; ) ), only thing I remember are huge hangovers, and destroyed rooms in dorms as an afterparty.. nice time, but with years I feel less and less attracted to it, performing bands are more and more generic..

have fun : )

Po polsku / Nazywam się Jade i mieszkam w Anglii. [37]

I'm also impressed with your language skills, I'm teaching my english friend polish, and although I am polish I find it really difficult to explain some parts of the polish grammar, hell, I have problems with understanding some of them by myself ; ) It's something you usually learn in ground school and forget, and later you just "feel" how different things should be said.

As previous posters wrote, "nie wiem robić" would translate into "don't know do", and they have given you a good explanation. You can also find a teacher pretty easily, probably you would find lots of eager people in here, or maybe through some language exchange pen palling sites : )

Good luck with your polish!

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

That's narrowmindedness. The Krk /Kościół r....

Don't be so extreme in your judgement, polish church took a big part in the fight against communism, as much as I dislike certain things about church and religion, I'm still able to see those things.

Generalising:
1. homogeneous society, lack of multiculturalism and following it closely different forms of chauvinism and fobias
2. politicians
3. beauracracy.. in micro and macro scale..

History / POLISH MEMORIES OF CHERNOBYL...April 26th 1986 [32]

Because I was just a little kid then I only remember my parents talking about it much much later, about that commie gov informed about the whole situation only after western media started talking about it, so many people reacted with a big delay, it was a sunny hot day in Poland and many people were walking freely, my mum took me for my first day in kindergarten, she said later when I was older, she would never do that if she knew. There was also a huge commotion about taking iodine these days.

Life / Popular and Practical Cars in Poland [49]

I don't think 4x4 cars are that popular in Poland at all, they are still an expensive vehicle for most of Poles - initial costs and maintance (they consume a lot) , but having one would be pretty handy while driving through Polish roads.. just recently I bent one of my rims in my little Honda Civic ; )

Work / What jobs pay 10,000 zlotych per month? and Where can i find one? :o) [101]

Well, I do believe what veteran forum members say, I'm just keeping my distance while hearing things from Guests or people with 20 posts, or those who are saying that having a salary of under 5000pln is poverty - who are just trying to insult others. Well educated natives from uk or usa can probably earn a lot as english teachers because they are a rare breed in here.. I'm rooting for anyone who is working hard to make a living despite the salary

well, bigos is local "pizza" you take all the leftovers from the whole week mix them with cabbage, now that's thriftiness! :)

Too much trolls in this thread to take everything seriously, I'll be happy if I can earn 3000 "netto" after graduating.. now I'm getting 10zl per hour full of heavy thinking and programming ; )

Language / Polish Swear Words [1242]

nice ass - niezły tyłeczek / niezły tyłek, more vulgar - niezła dupa/dupka
you look lovely - wyglądasz ślicznie

although it's probably a wrong order, first you say she is lovely, then that she has a nice ass and then ask if she likes doggystyle ; ) not in the opposite direction

Love / Polish guys who have never had girlfriends [71]

People gain a lot of experience while beeing in a relationship, he wasn't in any relationship earlier so he will be gaining this experience while beeing with you which isn't a really good thing at all.. if you are an adult then you will probably understand that. The first relationship ( and maybe even some more ) is usually discovering what we really need and what we expect from the other half.. and that might be blood sweat and tears..

Language / Your perception of the Polish accent [145]

I was talking about accent, not dialect.

Oh, sorry, my bad. I was just afraid that some people might get the wrong idea after reading that, but actually it was me who was mistaken, because of course one can discuss accent without mentioning the dialect.

Language / Your perception of the Polish accent [145]

They often use o instead of a.

Isn't it oversimplifying a bit? Siliesian is a whole dialect.. not just changing a to o. The amount of different words may actually make people from different parts of Poland unable to understand somebody who speaks Silesian. And changing a to o sometimes occures in the sociodialect of thugs and other people from pathological communities..

Language / Your perception of the Polish accent [145]

I also think that in Poland there's no big variety in accents, you've got the "góralski" highlander accent, Silesian which is a mix of German and Polish, Kashubian, and maybe Podlaski, these 4 are most "different", the rest is just "a bit" different, I'm from Silesia and I can clearly hear that fi. people from tri-city speak with just a slightly different accent then the Polish recieved pron. but I wouldn't recognise them as people from tri-city just by listening to them speaking...

I kissed 267 girls in just last month. Only 57,3033706% plus 60 suggested meeting afterwards but never called. What is happening with todays youth? I'm joining the "Are Polish girls emotionally instable" club and demending a serious answer to the clubs petition!

Language / Polish Swear Words [1242]

I don't think it is acceptable to use it in front of children, word "piździ" or often used "pizga" comes from the word "pizda" which is actually a pussy or a pranny..

History / Polish mathematicians who solved the Enigma machine [86]

maybe they would maybe they wouldn't.. surely it was a combined effort as someone wisely stated, and there's no room for what-ifs. Is bragging about who was better in smth and who was not that important to you? does it make you feel better? It's interesting history, not a mean to humiliate others...
