History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

There is a book I am reading about Polands contribution to the British war effort in ww2. It has been noted even the Queen said that if not for the Polish flyers the Battle of Britain would have been lost.

Further more, Poland contributed the 4th most in terms of numbers to the war.

I think what makes Poland part of the west is mindset. The ideas of freedom and tolorance have been part of Poland for 500 years. In addition, Poland was the first counrty to have a constitution in Europe.

And Non, If not for the US the whole British Isles would still be speaking German

Language / Spelling "aunt" in Polish [142]

Hi Wyandotteguy

I live up in Utica. What school did you go to. Most of the Polish Catholic schools by me have been closed for ages.

Life / Why are Poles always so miserable? Why do they never smile? [512]

I both agree and disagree about Pole's not smiling.

I know when I go to the Polish Markets the workers look so serious, like they are not having any fun. I have also been warned that in Poland to smile means you are happy about something, you must be rich, how come you are not helping me.

However, mY girlfriend and her friends smile often. When they smile it is with everything they have from head to toe. Maybe that smile is saved for special people.

Language / Anglos don't distinguish kasza from Kasia? [22]

Just imagine this: "Prosię postawić szę na moim miejscu" :-D

("proszę" - please; "prosię" - a little, young pig)

Its funny you say this because I was walking around saying little pig instead of please.

Da Grasso opened here recently and they make very good pizza

What I liked is they gave you pizza sauce instead of katchup.

Work / An Australian girl living in Poland: Residence permit, please help! [44]

It depends on when you put in for your permit and papers. If you applied before the first half of your 90 days was over you are supposed to be able to stay. Since you received your paperwork why do you have to leave?

I would call the Polish embassy in the country you are from and ask them.

Work / An Australian girl living in Poland: Residence permit, please help! [44]

But I'm hearing mumurings that they can (but this doesn't mean they will) legalise an illegal stay if there's exceptional circumstances

No one wants to make a decision that they could get in trouble for. It's much easier to say no.

Love / My husband is Polish and I was wondering why he drinks all the time. [66]

Maybe he is an alcoholic. However, he has to decide that he is.

I saw many people drink in Poland but it was rare that anyone was falling down drunk. I understand that Poland is now near the bottom of consumption in Europe compared to where they used to be.

Genealogy / Polish looks? [1410]

I am 90%+ Polish by blood and 3 and 4th generation born in the US. I met a man from the Ukraine where I worked before. He could tell I was Polish.

Food / Does beer have any "real" expire date? [39]

The hops in the beer end up degrading. Since the style of a Weiss is usually under hopped it will probably taste ok. More hops would have meant more change in flavor. Less hops would mean less change of flavor. However, hops are a preservative, so, who knows!

Love / Ten things to remember when you have a Polish girlfriend [79]

My gf's mom loves me. However, my gf is considered old for an unmarried woman and that might have something to do with it.

I don't care if my gf takes my food. As good of a cook as I am she is even better. She will turn it into something good.
