History / Can anyone from Poland tell me about Auschwitz and The Ghetto? [625]

...at the order of a Polish government which was made up of Poles? OK, guess they weren't Polish then. One thing though: why did the camps outlast Stalin?

Yes the 'communist' Polish government ran them even though only a small percentage of Poles were communists (Is this where I should add that a much higher percentage of Jews were communist?). As to why the camps did "outlast Stalin" um, this is one of those 'duh' answers; it's because the Soviet Union outlasted Stalin. The Russians were still there. Ever hear of the Warsaw Pact?

You seem to have a blind spot when it comes to the whole picture.

History / Polish-German alliance. [489]

I don't have the information here but I recall that in 1938 Hitler made an overture to Poland where he wanted access across the northern region (Gdansk, et al) and if given that an alliance would be possible. Some here might want to follow up on that.

Poles like you make me wish that Britain had joined the war on the side of the Nazis.

Ah, therein lies the true "heart of darkness". ... revealed. Thank you!

History / The restoration of Polish cities from WW2 destruction [123]

I have always been fascinated with the process of rebuilding of Polish major cities after the WW2. For me it is an amazing phenomenon

I've wondered about that as well. No Marshall Plan for Poland but hard work. An amazing feat. Thank you for the pictures.

Genealogy / Does your last name end in CKI not SKI [60]

Well, it's kind of late but I just found this thread.

In Polish, the 's' comes after consonants. The 'c' comes after vowels. Otherwise, it's essentially the same.......

Life / Why are Poles always so miserable? Why do they never smile? [512]

Don't get me wrong but Catholic Church in my opinion have a bit to do with Poles being miserable. We are very religious and every Sunday instead of spiritual fest people are singing all these sad songs and are supposed to regret all their sins and pray...nothing else.

A valid point; the church is not especially known for its humor. Poles carry a burdensome history. By that I mean that they have been 'victims' so often because of their geography and because of their frequent quests for freedom which threatened other countries.

As to the British, they don't smile because they have bad teeth.

History / Polish-German alliance. [489]

"The Germans want your land, the Russians want your soul." I've heard that a few times but it seems to me that both Germans and Russians want Poland's soul and land.

Of course historically and against all odds it seems that Poles are too stubborn (by nature?) to give either up.

Why are you belting on about Russians and Germans stealing things?

It's good to keep things in perspective. As you know, we are supposed to learn from history.

Having said that, in a previous thread I noted, if Adolph Hitler had a kid, that kid should not be thought of as guilty for his father's crimes, and todays Germans and Russians are innocent of past crimes done by others.

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [676]

I was wondering whats the typical Polish look of the Poles. The hair, eye, skin color, body build in both men and women, facial features.

You can tell someone is Polish by the twinkle in their eye; the shiny clean hair, melting smile, erect posture, courteous manner, philosophical wisdom, good manners and self-confidence.

News / US to deploy Patriot missiles to Poland [405]

The latest on the shield: Poland hopes U.S. will not let it down on shield

(Reuters) - Poland said on Sunday it hoped the new U.S. administration would not abandon plans to station a missile defence system on its territory.

President Barack Obama's administration is reviewing U.S. security policy, including the missile shield plan. This has prompted speculation he might shelve a project that has angered Moscow, with which Washington wants to mend ties.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Poland had taken "something of a political risk" in signing an agreement with the Bush administration to host the system.

Love / How to show a polish Guy I like him [56]

Just tell 'ski that you'd like to take him out to dinner. (he'll bite, pun intended).
Ply him with slightly too much wine and be your friendly self. Later, tell him you had a wonderful evening.

Anyway, that does it for me.

Language / "Poles" or "Polish people" - which is better to use? [200]

I think that if ppl from Poland are called Poles then ppl from Holland should be called Holes .

People from Germany should be called Germs?

People from Brazil should be called Bras?

People from Italy should be called Its'?

You can take it away from there.

Life / Polish and Czechs [191]

My daughter dated a Czech guy for 3 years. He still loves her but she broke up with him. My daughter said that his Czech friends would occassionally put her down in a friendly way because she was Polish. (Polish/American). Czechs seem to be torn between a superiority and an inferiority complex at the same time. Odd...

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

Earlier today I was relaxing with a cigar and sat near a woman at a park bench. We struck up a conversation. She said she was from Iraq but then admitted that she was a Kurd. Her husband is from Iran. Turns out this woman lived for 10 years in Sweden and 10 years in Poland. I asked her how she was treated in Sweden and she noted that Swedes were distant to her and her family. I then asked her about Poland and she said that the people there were very friendly. When I asked her if she spoke Polish she said "yes". Then I spoke a few words in Polish to her and she seemed surprised but spoke in Polish back to me, indeed, her Polish was better than mine. She was damn fluent.

She continued to say that Kurds and Poles had a lot in common noting that both wanted their own country historically, etc. She also had plenty of Polish friends in the Chicagoland area and her teenage son was with some Polish friends of his now. Her son also spoke the language.....

So I had an interesting exchange with this 'dark' woman who was well educated.
Who would have thought that in this crazy world her family had this sort of life experience.

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

I was in Okęcie Airport in Warszawa once, waiting for my luggage. Lol.
The Poles were pushing, standing next to the carousel, sticking out their elbows and complaining the whole time.

Yes, Poles are known for their extended elbows.

oh, it's moving too slow", or "oh, it's moving too fast".

Everyone knows there is no middle ground with Poles.

It is well known that Poles buy the largest bags possible. I, myself have one that is 6 feet by 6 feet.

In order to bring "whole possessions" it is necessary to carry large bags.

Even the Poles at the Yaoundé Airport in Cameroon were sticking their long elbows out at the indiginous people there. The poor Pygmys attempting to travel never had a chance.

have you ever seen my face, no so quit assuming

Technically you are correct. Just think of my comment as a metaphor of 'how' you communicate in these threads.

Polish peoples always blame communism on their mindset, or else they blame Russian/Soviet occupations or German occupations

It doesn't take too much brainpower to figure out why Poles "blame communism" ...or why they "blame Russian/Soviet occupations". Poles should just forget these and other several long-term holocausts to the country, right?

for their current lack of correct socialisitc mindset

It's true, Poles don't like socialism; and you wonder why?

they blaming every one but own self! Ridiculous tendencies which must be quashed

Yes, yes, quash those pesky Poles yet again. How dare they keep rising up over-and-again.
What is this nonsense called 'freedom' that they continually want?

Polish are born reactionaries

True again. Poles have reacted against the partitions; against Nazism, against communism, and against all elements that have repressed them. Indeed, Poles are "reactionaries".

This democracy of the mob I reject with contempt. Today they vote for Smith, tomorrow they will give their votes for Brown.

My votes go to Smith and Wesson. Those are the essential individual rights.

I've only been at the "Taste" 3 times in the past 10 years, but am planning on going this year. Hmmm, should I bring a ladyfriend or maybe make myself available to the attractive, intelligent Polish women there? Decisions, decisions.......

Thanks for the information.

The caveat is that I have known Polish people with Germanic last names including one named Berlin who was 100% Polish. Another I knew was named Stumber and he was Polish also. You never know these days; thanks again.

men acts in ways than are often interpreted differently
from women

True; women interpret things from their skewed self centered interests. This makes them wrong about 75% of the time.
