Most of the academics I know have to have second careers as consultants and the like.

That's what this job should be about... My "full professors" used to drive new S class Mercedes or Lexus cars and obviously they weren't buying them for money made at the univ, now what's wrong with that ? Would it be so much better If they were sitting at the univ all the time and had no clue about the real world ?

Żabka people also make 1/5 of what Wal Mart employees are making... You think Poland should pay professors American rates ? I guess doctors, nurses, teachers etc. too ? Who do you think should pay for that ?

Totally different case, If they stick there or not is not that relevant indeed, however my point is still standing that people should not get any privileges based on their sexual preferences. That should be obvious to everyone, unfortunately it isn't.

I think you should find some job quite easily but by some job I mean a standard position of a developer, which means sitting together with 20 other guys in an open space, doing rather boring job and making 3500-5000 PLN a month, which I doubt is more (or at least not much more) than you can make at home. Generally, unless you have some experience, which you didn't mention, like holding a managerial position at some international company etc. or some very rare skills, forget about making really good money here straight away, Ph.d. will not help much either.

I can bring my wife to Poland only after working for 2 years

I'm not much into such regulations but sounds too bad to be true.

In most cities they do but no as often as in normal days so it's probably like that in Gdańsk too.

ztm.gda.pl/rozklady -> select a line, then a stop and you've got the schedule under niedziele i świeta (sundays and holidays).

The short answer is that no it should not, if you need a gun in Poland as in much of Europe you get one.

Not true. It is extremely difficult to legally posses a gun in Poland, especially If you are not a hunter...

whether Poland should relax its gun laws.

Besides, I'm personally not so much in favour of Poles having millions of guns, however what is really wrong in Poland is that you may get a license or... not, even If you fulfill all the requirements... simply because... no.

In my opinion all the adult, healthy citizens without criminal record should be allowed to posses guns If... and here goes a long list of requirements, long enough to discourage all the people who don't need it badly, however once one fulfill all of them... one just get a license, just like in case of a driving license and so on. Obvious stuff really, unfortunately not in Poland.

If you really think you need a firearm

I don't... I've only been stating the obvious that walking down the street with hunting weapon on your back (even If that was legal here, It isn't know) is not really efficient way of self-defence, therefore the whole issue of hunting weapons do not really belong to this thread.

Yes but if one doesn't want to hunt or belongs to their stupid association

Even If one does, hunting weapon is not really good for self protection... anyway It needs to be kept locked at home for most time and can be carried out only If one goes hunting...

My father remembers his family hiding a prominent Jewish family during the war. He even wrote a glorious story about it, through the eyes of a young boy. He didn't include a post script though. After the war over, when his mother contacted the Jewish family, now returned to prominence, the Jewish family was so angry, they would not even open their door, or have anything to do with them.

OK so you provided us with several stories, contradicting to one another... so the world is not black or white... there are some good and bad among both Jews and Goys... yes, I know that...

It saddens me to think of male contributors to this thread thinking all has been done for women that CAN be done, and that they don't think any more SHOULD be done.

Dude, you are a male chauvinist. "Has been done for women" ? What kind of languages is it ? It's like If you were talking about some homeless pets, which need to have food supplied in winter. Women will be doing fine without your compassion and care.

Fascinating. Your story has a quite serious hole thought. Jews back then had no rights whatsoever, they could just take away their "gold" and kill them or call the Gerries to do that. No need to play any tricks with them for months or years risking their own life in that process.

Hmm, interesting point.

My previous post, on your approach to history, was on topic really.

1. The role of history should not be interpretation of facts the way to be charitable or not for one group or another.

2. I don't think it really is so charitable to present Poles as brainless beasts, who could be easily manipulated to kill Jews, neither It is true as then Jews would have not survived here even a single generation, let alone centuries and their population would have not been growing rapidly. Poles are not the group for whom it is convenient to pretend that there was some totally irrational hate of Jews anywhere they showed up and to build Jewish martyrology and national identity on that foundation.

It would be much more beneficial to everyone to have an unbiased approach to these issues and show their true nature and complexity. Let's be honest, 150 years ago "Poles are stealing our jobs" crowd would have quickly turned into looting their property, putting them by force on the ships sailing off to continental Europe and killing If they resisted. So much for "unique nature of anti-semitism", "traditional Polish anti-semitism", "Polish peasants manipulated by the clergy" and so on.
